Dwarvish Mesopotamia

And have it fall off every 5 minutes? Not on your life haha!

Fall off? Super glue the contact points, super glue the ends of string to curl around the ends of bow and stroke super glue along the entire string. It will last forever.

I can whip up a tutorial if you wish.

Perhaps later. I need to get these guys done for a tournament in early September.

So damn cunning!!

Sorry for the lack of posts here people. University has been kicking my butt. But(t) I am not entirely post empty-handed. Firstly, a little story. After spending ages on my chariots, something was bothering me. The models didn’t fit my army as well as I thought, the wheels were too flimsy and the sculpting work on the beasts wasn’t “clean” enough to fit the Juggernaught models I had used as a base.

So I went back to the old drawing board. And while they are nowhere near built enough to be shown, here is a fun little mock-up.

Alright, a little explanation haha. Firstly I looked at the Tomb King chariots, and then at Assyrian ones (the basis for my army) and realised that they I was looking at two completely different constructs. Egyptian chariots are smooth, like a horse-shoe if you looked top-down on the chariot. While Mesopotamian ones are more perfectly even and box-shaped.

Then there was the beast. I am not really a fan of single large creatures pulling chariots, not just visually as a concept, but there is something weird about the yoke that does not sit well with me.

So I went ahead and decided to solve both these problems. First, I needed a chariot. For this, nothing fit what I was looking for. So what I had to do was get some Imperial Guard tanks (lucky I had some lying around…don’t ask) and cut out the side-panels to construct a chariot from scratch. Sorry did I say “a” chariot? I meant 4, as that’s the maximum limit per army.

Then I needed wheels, sturdy and tough to match the dwarvish nature. Chaos Chariot wheels would do nicely here. For the spokes, I opted not to use the Chaos Chariot ones, as they are not only frail (I have broken some in the past) but didn’t fit the look I was going for. So I used the pummels from Dragon Ogre weapons, thick stout sturdy spikes that were clearly not organic. For the yoke, the Tomb King ones would do nicely.

Next, the most iconic part…the bulls. Now, finding bull models that don’t look like garbage is pretty difficult it seems. So I had someone print a bunch out for me, flipping a few left-to-right to artificially create more poses. I will later sculpt on some cloth over their backs for the yoke to sit on. I am tempted to make headdresses for 2 of them that will be used for a character’s mount.

And lastly, the chariot crew are…mostly fine. I am happy with the half-naked bodies with the scale-mail tunics. But the Hittite hairstyle will have to go. Instead I will add the tall helmets I use for my basic warriors. Oh, and since last time I have made better spears (out of Dark Eldar ones) so those will be added as well. Might alter some poses I am not satisfied with as well.

Stay tuned for more, I promise this is going to be a good one

Oh. And when I get time I will post more pics of other models. Just not much has been done that is worth showing…just yet.

Not forgotten, just buried under university work and me juggling other projects.

I’ve just got back to cycling round to the army again. So hopefully some updates soon!

Also I got a new phone recently (which took a while to set up…) so pics should be a lot higher quality!

While I filter through which models are worth taking pictures of, here’s some older pics I had sitting around:

Hobgoblin elite cavalry the “Eternals”. Here I really tried to give them the Persian-style spangenhelms, complete with scale-mail mouth and nose covers. They also have much more barding, going around the entire mount.

They have great weapons, but I am posing them with their bows out as it’s both easier to pose (less likely to bump each other) and creates a different silhouette to my cataphracts.

Hobgoblin BSB. Here I tried a new design for the helmet. My Satraps are using the GW Cursed City skeleton face-plate. I liked it due to the blank expression, giving a creepy look and some character, while also making them look very heavily armoured (not to mention the all-encompassing scale-mail around the lower half of the face). Also keeping the same overall helmet design, so the visual themes carry over.

The little top-knot on the wolf is the same as Sassanid Persian horses have on the top of their mane. So a nice little visual cue there.

The Shah on his Tusker. Here I used the Oruuk Brutes Grunta unit champion for the massive face armour of the mount. I think it mimics armoured war elephants nicely, while still clearly goblinoid.

And a little shot of the Shah outside the howdah. It will likely be mostly hidden later, but I like his scale-mail under the front of his tunic. Keeps the visuals on-theme.

Foot character. Just a nice show of the scale-mail in-action. Plus showing the Persian-style swords I use for my Hobgoblin great weapons. It’s taken from the Tzaangor kit, and attached to the Stormvermin halberd handle.

Close-up of a Cataphract unit champion. Sadly no sword here, but he has one now.

Gogyag has had an update. Now with a huge Howdah, instead of a row of wooden panels before. Due to the angle of the mount’s back, it felt like everything was about to fall off. Plus it wasn’t quiiiiiiiiiite Persian-enough for my tastes. This looks tougher, more stable and better reinforced.

Some hastily thrown-together shots of my Hobgoblin army before a small one-day event. Painting wasn’t finished, but was up to a “reasonable” standard.

Here I have:

  • Shah on Bear-Dog
  • Satrap BSB on Bear-Dog
  • 2 Mages on foot
  • 34 spear Hobgoblins
  • 20 Hobgoblin Archers
  • Gogyag
  • 2 units of 10 Slingers
  • 2 units of 10 Cataphracts
  • 10 Hobgoblin Light Cavalry
  • 2 units of 15 Hobgoblin “Janissaries”
  • 3 Hobgoblin “Camel Archers”

The chariot models I have been working on have sadly reached a bit of an issue, due to me not being satisfied with the chassis. Everything else is ready to go, I even went to the British Museum to take some pictures of Assyrian chariots to try and have another look at designs I can use:

Hopefully there is something box-like already that I can just pilfer, rather than building from scratch…

Also I have started getting better ideas on my Kadim Titan/K’daai Destroyer. Thanks to Total War for helping me fill in the gaps in the design:

This is often the problem I have with conversions. I know what I am doing for 90% of it, but the rest…I have problems with. Thankfully this has REALLY helped, and I should be making great strides with it soon.

Thanks for reading, and sorry for the long hiatus!

The aforementioned episode of our new kitbashing show about chariots looks at the market. Wargames Atlantic came out with wicker bronze age chariots recently. For me, I like your original designs so much I prefer the TK chariot with big beefy Chaos Chariot wheels. But that’s all just taste.

Sorry again about my absence. University and then some personal tragedies have kept me from doing much with this army, so I honestly didn’t have much to post…until now!

I wasn’t overly happy with the shield design I had gone for with my Immortals. For starters they were simply too large, the models bumped into each other and made ranking an absolute pain. The other problem was that they were too “chaosy”. Far too random and non-uniform for my tastes.

So I set about looking for a replacement…and it was staring me in the face. Immortals!

After playing a DLC for a favourite game set during the Greco-Persian wars, I had the idea of just giving my Immortals the same shape shields as their namesake.

And the result is this:

These shields were lifted from the Wargames Atlantic Persians kit. The shields were the perfect size, and their plastic quality is on par with Games Workshop’s, so again a perfect fit. And don’t worry about me spending bank to get them…I have a historical Sassanid army I am building anyway, these were basically sitting around for me to just use.

I’m not sure why my camera was struggling so much. Perhaps the poor British weather was making it too difficult to get enough light.

But this isn’t the only Immortals update.

For a while I had been struggling with finding a Great Weapon that fit my armies’ aesthetics. Too many options I tried just looked out of place, were too big or too small. But then…again something obvious hit me. The maces from the Horns of Hashut! And so…

Here you can also see the Immortals shield lipping over the back. A nice trick I use to make infantry look bulkier than they actually are.

The mace choice I am very happy with, as I wanted to avoid hammers (to keep as far away from the Norse/Celtic dwarf look as possible) and a similar thing with axes. Swords meanwhile wouldn’t fit either, as the weapon shaft was too long. But this is just right!

Also a small change to another model, my Hobgoblin Light Cavalry.

Here I added a Persian-style top-knot to the wolf’s head. Parthian and Sassanid cavalry had a little top-knot at the front of their horses’ manes, so I decided to do the same here. I felt that my light cavalry were too “plain” and decided to give a bit more of a Persian touch to them.

Speaking of a more Persian touch…I scrapped the historical Roman shields for my Hobgoblin infantry, as they were honestly not very fitting and were far too plain. So once again, I looked to history (and historical kits) and found just what I was looking for…Sparabara.

This is just a mock-up, as I plan to glue them onto the spearmen I have nearly finished painting (yes I have actually nearly finished those 40 idiots…). So that I don’t have to reach under their shields all the time to apply paint. The shield was actually turned around, so that’s the back of the shield that now forms the front.

I acquired these Sparabara from Wargames Factory’s Persians, which sadly seem to be out of production. I would have used the Wargames Atlantic ones…but those are frankly huge, at an eye-watering 30% bigger. They also have less of a rough wicker back of the shield.

The Sparabaras are perfect. The wicker has a bit more of a “rough” look to them compared to the overly-sleek Roman design, and is clearly made of materials that can easily be found. And it has more detail to it with the intricate patterns, much better to catch someone’s eye on the tabletop.

Hope you all enjoy. And sorry again for my absence. I plan to enter an even with my Dwarves at the end of February, and THANKFULLY I have only got 2 units which need to be built by then…not an entire army. So fingers cross this time that I don’t have to rush anything.

Funnily I saw it, as I got a notification about being tagged haha!

I actually have those Song of Ice & Fire Elephants that were in the video, but they are for a historical army (and needed a fair bit of work).

And good to be back! Hopefully it won’t be anther year before my next post…

Also I’ll be happy to do another podcast whenever one with a relevant topic comes up

Alright, camera was behaving itself today. So got some pics in after a round of sculpting (mostly filling in cracks. But it’s gotta be done).

First up is the Immortals with Great Weapons. Here you can get a proper look at them, and the really fun champion model I made. I really like the “hefting heavy weapon over shoulder” look.

And some Hobgoblin Wolf Cavalry. Here I used the new Dire Wolves kit, and decided to patch them up…because apparently I like making things harder for myself.

Still, pretty happy with most of the repaired muzzles so far. Required quite a bit of looking at photos of wolves to make sure I hadn’t made a mistake.

And last but not least, another attempt at looking at one of my Immortals with a “violin” shield. I think it fits pretty well. At least it should have fewer issues ranking up this time around…
