Yeah that is pretty much how I did it (the simple way). It’s just the greenstuff threads that are making it so tedious.
They are from the new Squig Hoppers box. They just look way more serious on a body more in-scale.
Very very cool work, very nice green stuffing
Dedicated! I can’t remember seeing anyone but me (for @Eisenhans ’ giant and a lamellar tutorial) sculpting threads for 28mm lamellar armour. 1990s GW Hobgobla Khan’s wolf riders had no threads, meaning the lamellar looked like scalemail. I’ve seen threads sculpted for larger scales, but not 28mm, even though it is doable. Finicky as hell, of course.
One advantage of doing threads (or leather straps, whatever rows your boat) is that you can colour them in bright colours to make them stick out.
Lovely, lovely Hobgoblin Keshik conversions, @Tyranno . Wolf rider heavy cavalry, done with great style! Later on I’ll savour reading the Hobgoblin supplement, and the ID army book. We’ll have to give the creative work put into both due attention here on CDO when energy exists for it. For people who don’t play T9A there can still be a lot of background and art inspiration, or fun units or special rules to inspire conversions. That’s one of the things I like best after the community split following End Times: All the creativity and the different directions companies, community projects and individual fans pull the concepts in.
@Uther.the.unhinged might be interested to check out the Keshiks above. Just a tip.
@Anzu : Thanks a lot! I’ll copy over all our tutorials to new CDO soon enough I hope. It’s not much work left to do.
Cheers
What a unique army. Truly overflowing with creativity, it will be a joy to follow! I enjoy your nods to morrowind aswell :).
Thank you! Actually these Hobgoblins are based on Aswaran rather than Keshig. And trust me I know the difference, I have Keshig models
In fact I should make a bigger post explaining the design ethos behind my Hobgoblins at some point, just so people don’t confuse them for Mongolian designs.
I can try to write something up for 9th. I have a bunch of free time this week after tonight, so might have a good oppertunity to do so.
Might as well explain the Hobgoblins.
They are for the 9th Age Hobgoblin book, which I helped write and led the team. The overall design aesthetic of the army is Sassanid in nature. It does not mean the army is a carbon copy, just that the overall units and playstyles have a similar feel to them.
This particular unit I posted are called Hob Cataphracts. They are a heavy cavalry unit with bows, lances and paired weapons. The idea behind them is that they are hobgoblin shock cavalry that are also very versatile. In fact feedback so far seems to indicate that they can chew through infantry at shocking speed.
My models aim to reflect this Sassanid nature, but not to a massive degree. The overall idea is that these are Hobgoblins that have come to the same ideas, but use different elements. Like rather than ride horses covered in neat barding, they ride wolves in uneven rougher shaped barding. Hopefully this gives them an interesting but grounded look.
Also picture update:
More shots of the Hob Cataphracts. But this time with 6 new ones and…
The general for my army, the Shah. Not anywhere near complete. But you can get a good idea where the design is going.
I really wonder how and when will you ever paint all of this xD
Also, your level of dedication is the highest in the entire forum. Everytime, every pic, every model is incredible
Really impressive conversions!
These are absolutely amazing.
…shuddup
If it makes you feel better, I have painted stuff. But it’s just not 100% done, and I feel like partially completed models are way more interesting than partially completed paint jobs.
Thank you!
You should see what’s coming next…
Great updates, looking forward to seeing the painted to see the awesome conversions come to life
More Hobgoblin stuff!
This strange model is a “Sky Mountain Emissary”. It’s a large cavalry-archer unit that goes on a 40x60 base. It’s really strange and I am looking forward to testing it out in battle later.
Here is a unit champion for my Hobgoblin Wolf Riders. Wanted a bit more of a dynamic pose here, so chose a more static wolf and a pointing gesture, combined with a more relaxed weapon arm. The sword I am very pleased with, as it has a bit of a brutal Uruk-Hai vibe.
This mighty beast is a Drum Gogyag. A monster that joins infantry units and has a massive drum to influence the battle.
It’s made from one of the new orc models GW released, quite cheap for its size as well, and I am very happy with how it has come out. Especially the synchronised drum beaters.
Should have more Chaos Dwarf stuff later.
Very cool conversions! Now all you have to do is paint them!
LOVE these. Always keen to hear your bit recipes, I see a lot of skaven and classic night gobs?
Correct! The bodies, drumsticks and halberds are from the Stormvermin. While the hooded heads are from the (current) Night Goblins, either the plastic infantry box or a few from the mounted ones.
The sword on the unit champion is actually a Skaven Clanrat spear-tip. Cut down and pinned on.
Bows and arrows are from the Ungor kit. Plus some of the arms here and there.
