I don’t think 3rd edition was better than 6th, that’s for sure. However, as this was the start of CDs, and for those that love 3rd ed figure line. I’m just really surprised nobody else has even tried it.
I’m not sure this is the thread for me to try and put my feelings on the issue. I think I"ve derailed it enough. I’ll start a new thread.

I guess I have the Star Trek syndrome, always like the even editions more then the odd ones.
Started out with 4th, loved 6th, was okay with 8th and looking forward to TOW, which for many is sort of 10th.

Where is Ancient Battles?
It’s not a Fantasy system, it’s a historical one. I’ll include it if we decide to poll historicals.
good point, me sleepy mind clearly missed that were are talking fantasy systems

That’s alright, it’s only in the title. We are limited to 20 options on each poll which is actually quite restrictive, so if we do do historical, I’ll try to cast a wide net but there’s just so many options.
I do own Ancient Battles, but I haven’t tried it yet. What’s it like?
Warhammer 4.5 or 5th edition. Except, you don’t have the big heroes in Ancients, so it doesn’t become ‘herohammer’ like 4th and 5th. So arguably, it’s the best Warhammer ever.

I used to do a bit of WAB tournament play. Not much, but a bit. I’d say those Rick Priestley rules suited historics a bit better.
One issue was that the later in period, the more powerful. So the very anicents used to get slaughtered. Also, you had your powergamers with the Mongol mounted archers staying out of range and throwing more dice at you, than Hasbro make in a year…Just wasn’t fun.
One thing I wanted to try, and I started to collect armies is…I’ve always felt that the best scale for wargames would have been/is 20mm. You have a solid figure, with detail, but you can scale things to a ‘proper’ army vs army size.
Newline design used to be dirt cheap. You could buy 100 piece armies for 10 pounds (I think). They have the detail, but are cheap metal figures. Though it doesn’t look like they’re as cheap as they were. And they may have cut back on the range a bit.
I definitely collected at least 4 armies of these…Greeks, Romans, Carthaginian and Persians. My plan was to half the measurements of WAB, and have double the size battles…though with double the size battles, some double the painting and WAB involves a lot more units than WFB as it is…I’m a dreamer!

8th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
The one, the only. Period. (at least for me)
