GW terrain ideas

Anyone else inspired by some of the beautiful terrain we’ve seen in these shots

The grids on the floor are quite impractical as their feet would fall through the gaps! But I love the colours and the towers.

Definitely feeling inspired to try using LED strips.

What happened here?? Good grief. This is a low-point for GW showcasing their stuff. Hell, there would have been major bonus points for going old school retro if they’d just plunked them down on a table with some static grass:

Most of this looks like poor choices of off-the-hardware-store-shelf components rushed together with some laser-cut balsa wood frames. I mean, if this was one of our members posting this as their army shot all hats would be off to them. From GW though?? Nah.

I see a couple of things of interest in there, but they’re things we’ve already identified that are being used for most of these product shots. First though, The "Bad"

Just what is going on here? This is not the level we expect from the world’s largest and publicly traded miniatures company:

Oops, sorry chat. My bad. That last pic is literally a photo from underneath the motorized mount for our built-in TV. But you can see it fits the aesthetic. Our carpenter is good, but I wouldn’t be hiring him to do my terrain. He could probably get a job with GW doing their future AoS scenes if he wasn’t bogged down in the trade$. OK, all fun and games, but I digress. I don’t really want to delve into what’s wrong here as I feel my point has been made.

The “Good”

These are all just fantastic elements as far as I’m concerned and are a real goldmine of elements of design that can be borrowed. Starting from left-to-right:

  1. The walls. The walls are fairly minimal, so that may be good or bad, depending on your taste, but I like them much more than I dislike them. Slabs of extruded polystyrene (insulation foam board) cut with “V” grooves to establish the block layers, and with the path of the cut on a very slight angle from the edges toward the centre making a chevron pattern (very elongated stack of “V” shapes). That’s great and you can make tons quick. The edging of the walls is not particularly chaos themed, but it’s still good and can be easily made with plasticard. The taurus head is a great detail. CDO needs some free stencils of these designs made up for people to cut their own out of plasticard, probably some templates for printing out water transfer decals and maybe a nice STL file for 3D printing a nice embossed symbol.

  2. The columns. Slightly different taurus design. Excellent, we’ll be commandeering that in no time. It’s good. Love the hexagonal shape and then the tapering of the round parts covered in a scaled pattern!??!!! Chef’s kiss.

  3. Molten metal cauldrons. Goody gravy YES. Sign me up. If we’re not able to buy this terrain piece I’m going to need to get some elsewhere. The echoing of the hexagonal shape is good work. And look at that little chain off to the far right, lending some clues to the viewer as to how the cauldron may be operated mechanically from elsewhere. Ahhh, the industry of the Dawi Zharr. Nah, I’m still not keen on the AoS-ification of the name.

  4. Hexagonal plinths. Where better to stand imperiously over those who are subservient? Sorry, that’s not meant to be a question. Where better! I’m going to need some of these for my display cabinet. Easy to make out of foam and they’re now part of the grand vision of the look of the army.

So, all-in-all, more hits and misses, but holy Hanna, those were some epic misses. Sorry GW. Must try harder.

Let your rage fuel the forges of creativity deamonsmith :cd1991gif:

That looks terrible and it looks much more 40k than AoS or TOW. I am inspired to not use that as a reference, that’s for sure.

One interesting thing to note. I don’t think we’ve ever seen terrain inside a CD ziggurat before.

Comparing to open terrain is apples and oranges.

A landscape where practically everything is made of metal, to grass.

I always Imagined the chorfs have plants in the ziggurats even thought they hate nature

They do, you were just thinking about the wrong kind of plant

Ooof, wouldn’t go as far some people in this thread

Lots of cool stuff, it’s not the best choice to show the minis as you’ve really got to stretch to see them but there is definitely an atmosphere created by using the lighting.

I would have liked to see a desolated forest instead, army charging through burnt out trees and buildings in greys and dark wood the army would stand out a lot more and would feed into the overall theme.

@Grimstonefire have you got thoughts on your display diorama yet?

Maybe it’s just the steel structure supports before they pour some concrete or add stone for a new building? Though it looks an awful lot like Warlords of Draenor to me… would explain the orc heads as well

Yes it’s going to be relatively simple, just a crumbling wall behind.

The second diorama (i.e. other half of the army) I’ll definitely be doing inside a forge, stealing some inspiration from this.

I’ve found a more interesting ground cover option.

If people have a 3D printer you guys could cover a chunk of a battlefield in this.

Throw in some flat plasticard areas, some plastic mesh, and perhaps some regular gravel areas. Would look cool.
