Helsmiths

Who else will be playing Helsmiths in AoS? I know that they didn’t fit for everyone but I thought they showed some of what’s good about the AoS setting, playing with the original theme bit going a different way.

I think they have a good army profile, elites for melee and shooting, magic, war machine, monster, cavalry and chaff. I think is going to be great and I can’t wait!!

(If any of you are playing Aos now, and in Gothenburg a few of use are going to pizza brawl 30 aug, let’s go!!)

I am!
Looking at the “AoS-ification” of factions like the High Elfs into Lumineth I was really scared of what they’d do to Chorfs. Somehow by some miracle they managed to crash the car, have it flip over in the air, and land perfectly parked in an aesthetic I love.

Rant about the aesthetic change inside :down_arrow:

Summary

I while I understand some of the laments the old guard veteran Chorf players have with the look, I quite like this rendition of them. For example the lore reasons for the chaos iconography being gone is something I find to be really enticing.
Things like the big noses being nerfed was something we already saw as the miniature proportions for Dwarfs changed since the 3rd-5th ed of WHFB, so I don’t think the Helsmiths have smaller noses than the Legion of Azgorh release for example. I suppose it’s unfortunate they have nose-guards on the helms, but you can still see the men have proportionally big noses on the helmetless models.
The only thing I dislike are the unisex units with women (I wanna collect DWARFS with BEARDS!), but thankfully they new modern unisex warhammer kits always have enough male heads to cover the unit.

My “main” army is a small KO force that i have largely retired, because while AoS was a fun game I never could really get into KO as an army.
I had one foot in the door and almost started both OBR and Kruleboyz, but never got completely sold on them either.
Currently I am working on a Barrow Kingdom (skeleton) heavy SBGL force. Don’t think I can finish it in time for a tournament that early. I live close to Sweden though, and it never really occurred to me that you guys probably have a more active Warhammer scene then here in Norway. Something to consider!

This Helsmith release is my favorite looking AoS release bar none. I’ve never been this hyped about getting into an army before.
Really hoping the playstyle is fun, because the roster as you said is looking quite balanced.
It’s seems like it’s a “heavy castle & counter-punch” army, but maybe you can build it more aggressive too with bull centaurs & Dominator Engines.
I’m excited to find out!

I play Kharadron!

Good points about the look.

I have a few FW infernal guard units and artillery (Daemon engine, death quake mortar, magma and deathskriek rockets) that I’ll try and mix in with the box when it comes out.

Norway is not too far, if your in the south! We are in long countries! Hälsa från Göteborg :cd1991gif:

We definitely need an AOS tactica thread. Hope this is it - most of our AOSheads didn’t make the jump to 4th. I think @philpaintsstuff said he will get back into it with Helsmiths.

I play Kharadrons and I will be playing Helsmiths like a madman. We have a National AoS Circuit (which I played with my KOs two years in a row) and I will probably switch to Helsmiths if they are fun to play
(Note: Kharadron’s without pew-pew-pew are incredible fun)

About their visuals, I love them. They are not as cartoon as I wanted, and I wasn’t expecting Art Decó as their main aesthetic/ design, but they look unique enough to not just be “chaos dwarves in X setting”. Their Bull centaurs, their Infernal Cohort and all their Heroes look fantastic, and that’s the core of their army. I prefer my skyvessels as “weird war-machines”, but I can’t deny that they are interesting with that F1-front.

So, about the rules, my recopilation of what Adam and Eddie said from the show/ warcom article:

  • Army mechanic (Battle traits?): harness daemon escence as a resource to bolster your units (weapons or spellcrafts).
  • The green orbs from the spears are daemon-escence to power-up their weapons (note: Swords doesn’t have that orb).
  • Infernal Cohort are the backbone of the army: heavy armoured elite units.
    • Spears: More defensive things, anti-charge (Eddie said anti-cavalry too)
    • Sword: More Ofensive, anti-infantry
    • They have a musician (hobgrot gong), banner and Champion. One of them is wielding a two-handed weapon.
    • Slow (4" as other duardins?)
  • War Despot: Melee leader, rules from the front.
  • Dominator Engine: 2+ save, lots of wounds
    • With Bane Maces: “can mulch entire units”
    • With Immolation Cannons: can set fire in the middle of enemy units (?). They become “devastating” while empowered by their army mechanic.
  • Tormentor Bombard:
    • Shoot at single enemy unit, and the units close to the target also take damage
    • Can take down blobs of enemy infantry/ mass formations
    • 30" range
  • Deathshrieker Rocket Battery:
    • Monster-killer
    • Eddie: “Can take a Monster in a single volley”
  • Bull Centaurs: Aggradon-sized
    • Well armoured and hit really hard.
    • Damage on the charge
  • Anointed Sentinels:
    • More defensive than Bull centaurs
    • Great at counter-punching (counter-charge?)
  • Infernal Razers: Their guns will be rend -1 while empowered by their army mechanic. They are elite and high value.
    • With Blunderbusses: More range
    • With Flamehurlers: Shoot in combat
    • Very good at shooting but slow
  • Hobgrot Vandalz:
    • They are faster than Helsmiths.
    • They can Scout (push early in the game).
    • Slightly better armour than Kruleboyz hobgrots
    • They doesn’t have daemon-escence in their weapons
  • Daemonsmith:
    • He is a wizard
    • They can heal warmachines
  • Ashen Eldar: Priest of hashut and Daemonsmiths near an Ashen Eldar can shrug of damage (Ward?).
  • Urak Taar on Ghorrakos (Infernal Taurus)
    • He is a Daemonsmith
  • Daemonsmith on Infernal Taurus:
    • Can be build as male or female

Hope it helps!

What I found interesting listening to Honest Rob was he said Chaos Dwarfs look to be quite unique at the moment in that they have not just wizards but also priest where other armies would normally have just one or the other.

So right off the back it looks like as you touched on above a offensive play style with the magic lore and then also a prey lore for a more defensive play.

Add to that the fact right from the start there are also Calvary units, infantry, monstrous and artillery there is a lot of options where others are still quite limited.

I’m far from a gamer but this sounds to me they’ve put a lot into a brand new faction.

Oh my god, the man, the myth, the legend!

I want you to know that your old blog of pin-hat Dwarfs with greenstuff beards has lived rent-free in my head for over 11 years.
Just such a soulful hobby project.

EDIT: Sorry for off-topic posting. I’m just an old fan.
