Project Slayer Sword

I have a plan: Win the Slayer Sword as this year’s Golden Daemon held at Essen Spiel.

As many of you know, I’m an equally talented and prolific painter. Naturally I should capitalise on this and win a Slayer Sword.

I have a few idea what I might enter (heck, I might just do them all!)

  1. Helsmith character in the AoS category. Painting a Chaos Dwarf seems fitting, I don’t think I have to tell you. I have a model in mind, it’s a good but modest model and would offer enough variety. I would paint it in my Legion of Jaskorh style, but to the best of my abilities. Maybe a simple plinth, who knows.
  2. Small diorama. I have good bits to make a small scene of an Apothecary kneeling besides a fallen space marine (commander?). I would probably benefit from some kind of painted background, def some very light scenery around it.
  3. Warhammer Underworlds Warband. I have a few primed lying around and they are just such cool models. Probably would need some kind of way to present them too.

Those are the straight forward ideas. I also have two wild cards:

I have two old Yarricks. Paint him up 90s style, complete with goblin green base etc. Would def need that banner though. (I also have classic Nork Deddog, could maybe even do a thing with the two…) Enter in 40k category.

This is the first model I’ve ever painted. As it happens, this year marks my thirtieth anniversary in the hobby. I would take another model of the unit (looking equally stupid), strip it, and paint it like this one but to the best of my abilities. I would need to learn NMM for example. Then basically enter both in the open category. Would be a fun thing with the 30 year journey. (problem is people and myself looking at the new one and thinking “It’s the same picture” and realising I’ve not gotten any better. Ends with me crying in the corner.)

Anyway, watch this space to see how that all works out.

You know Jasko, there’s an Olden Demon competition too - might be something to give a go for? Display / Competition style material can be stressful. It’s certainly a commendable goal!

I look forward to your posts!

Thanks mate!
Well, Olden Demon doesn’t award the Slayer Sword, so…

You’re right, it sure doesn’t! I competed in GD here in the States one year, way way back in 2006. I had no chance, but sometimes, you try to just see what it was like. I got to meet some of the Eavy Metal guys over here at the time: I remember getting to chat with Ty Finnochairo (I think that was his name) about painting the Chaos army, which had just released for Storm of Chaos… He helped me figure out that the wooden end wasn’t what I was supposed to be painting with! So it was quite the win for me!

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m going for. I think it’s invigorating to be able to say, I once entered something in a Golden Demon competition. What a glorious achievement!

And hey - you are talking to the winner of the September 2022 Miniature of the Month painting competition at Warhammer Store Cologne for my Rock Raiders Votann, so…

I think it’s awesome that you’re trying! I love looking at 500 hour projects  ! And hey, with credentials like this, I know that you will bring massive glory to the Bullfather and all his loyal subjects! (You do have to realize that Chorf is the only real option for that Slayer Sword win though right?.. I’ll start sacrificing cats locally to help you along… LOL)
