The Big Poll: Helsmiths of Hashut

comparing traditional sculpting to cad, they are different art-forms.

Fair. I tend to look at the finished product as opposed to consider the way it was produced when comparing minis. However, fair point. We are comparing two different approaches to making miniatures here.

Interesting really we’ve gone through phases

  • Metal mono pose
  • Plastic mono pose
  • Plastic multi pose (with fully modular pieces)
  • Plastic with some options, but often hollowed out (so effectively mono pose). Or the arm connects to the head, chest & leg type models

Arguably the fully modular variety (no longer in fashion with gw) is the type most CD players want. We are probably the most diverse group in terms of our views on the look of the army of any group.

  • Plastic multi pose (with fully modular pieces)

To me is the best option in any way.

You can enjoy creating different models easily
You can save some piece to create new models or convert
They were cheaper (back in the day…) than blisters (to create and army)
You can paint the separated pieces if you need

Its a shame that Chaos Dwarfs didnt had any of that great boxes with 15 plastic warriors (in modular pieces) that other armys had back in the 2000s… (7th edition if Im not wrong).

It’s this for me. Technical skill, method of sculpting, and quality of sculpt aside. The side by sides you’ve shown do share a bit of a vibe to me. Almost as though this was a third generation mantic release after mantic took a long hard look at LKM (and figured out how to make models that can be assembled without a blowtorch and bolt cutters).

We criticize mantic for going their own bold directions sometimes. For AoS these nu-models are precisely to the intended specifications to fit within a..

The nu-sculpts also are a bit analogous to the decline of LKM in my eyes. LKM started off with great Chaos dwarf terrain and machines.. slowly over time as they exercised all the digital sculpting tools at their disposal and cranking up to 11 extra details and wonky aesthetic womble combos.. as a result I haven’t seen a good LKM patreon in years where I used to be an early adopter and semi-regular.

Chitz already hit on it, the older I get the more I want minis from before I was born. Perhaps it is this simple for me. Goofderp models for me these days and flush the rest down my chaos toilet..

I like daemon face in the flamevomitter-frieddiggerdingledongledungleguns. Wish there was more of that in the metalwork or shields.

We are also spoiled with many options now that weren’t present 5-10 years ago. Scarcity may have colored this release differently compared to the wealth we have now in 4 A.B. (After Brian). Prices will keep me away from getting inspired to do heavy converting on nuchorfs but that’s fine with me. I won’t be running out of stuff to paint and other people will be happy to paint these new models. There will be another influx of inspiration that people will bring to this forum as a result of the release.

I do think there’s some bits in the release that you would really make sing. We just got done doing like 3 hours of range reaction and there’s some boilers and furnaces and a hobgoblin with a massive wrench I really wish you could get involved with. The best thing about that godawful artillery piece (and I do hate it) is what you can build with it elsewhere.

RIP GW bits shop. I’d throw wrenchgob in cart with the missing crocshabti I never got in the random blister packs. Wouldn’t work these days anyway with the random left kneecap and disembodied forearm that is attached to the part you want.

I’ll not be adding that astra chorfitarum gun emplacement to cart evah.

No but I’m seriously considering mailing you the sprues from the one I get in the launch box because I can’t make half of much of it as you would. And I don’t like either build.

This world-weary comment makes you sound like you have become a veteran. Congrats oldtimer!

Maybe invest in a resin printer? The sky is the limit then

Us naysaying nu-grogs @KhamdrimSkyMaster and I have a good arrangement for all the expired blue resin milk I can snort. Dontchyu worry zodd. Every now and then when I’m typing vigorously and grumpily frowning, a spare familiar falls out of my neckbeard where it had been lodged for many months.

Even my moldy, dingy, nigh-windowless, zero ventilation, non-resin printer friendly basement apartment fits my beleaguered soul.

This needs to become the way we track dates from now on…

Chaos dwarfs online was not set up in 2007 ad…

It was set up in what? 14 B.B?

I agree and I’m sure @Reaver will over time cherry pick the best bits.

I’m going in hard on these. Backed and forthed for about a week and then decided “sod it”.

I’ve had a pot of money in a savings account for a while ready for a Warhammer release that I really wanted to happen to happen. If it’s isn’t plastic chaos dwarfs…what the hell was I waiting for?!

So..yes…Going to do a full army. But won’t be without conversion or kitbashing.

In fact Jared, your approach to making the kharadron minis serve your purpose and twisting them to your own ends will be a key inspiration!

Or should it be B.B. and A.P. (After Passing?)

Oh that’s quite nice. Give the same BC/AD feel

Before Brian
After Passing

Okay so next job is to go through every single thread we have here that lists ranges and when they were released and change them to this new format which only people that have read this thread will understand.

It’s perfect

We gotta retcon the whole server now

I spent a couple of hours looking at the release pic by pic last night with Xander and Jasko. I finally feel like I’m resolved.

I will buy the launch box, two sets of BCs, two of the foot character, maybe some hobgoblins and the Underworlds warband (which I think is one of the best “unit champions” products you could get).

I will be cannibalising almost all of it into other projects. I’m going to be kitbashing it with necromunda squats and other 40k stuff. The characters, warband and BCs may well be seen on square bases. The rest is for parts, mainly but not exclusively for 40k projects.

So, I’m really looking forward to seeing sprue layouts.

Yeah, information on sprue layout and model scale are critical.

Gonna leave this here
In the Beninging

In the beginning there were mighty chaotic dwarf warriors
:cd1980:

Years later they discovered peak fashion going back to distant ages
:cd1990:

Then they briefly came back with showels and stoic appearance
:cd2000:

But later on they still possessed full plated armies and a splash of fashon
:cd2010:

At this point noone has clue wtf happened but there was something strange in the neighbourhood
:cd2020:

Till we finally reached the new age, the age of Brian
