The Lapis Legion

Hi all, wanted to start this log off with a story.
The Lapis Legion is so known for its sorcerers who not only turn into stone, but into a magnificent blue stone. It is a particular gift of Hashut. As the sorcerers die, their bodies are broken down and used in the construction of its armor and weaponry. And so they live on.

This is mostly WIP - it takes a long time for me to finish models, but I do hope to eventually have some on here!

The Wisdom of Iz-Kur-Has-A-Sudu

Once, as the wise sorcerer prophet patrolled the factories in his slave-drawn litter, two hobgoblin women approached. Rather than killing valuable labor, he let them approach. The two of them held a baby in their hands.

The first one said, “Oh, my lord, this detestable hag and I live in the same tenement, and I gave birth to a child while she was there. A few days after she also gave birth. That woman’s child died because she laid on him in the middle of the night. Then she took my living child and switched it with her dead child.”

The second one said, “No, you disgusting fiend, this living one is mine, the dead one is yours!”

The mighty and wise prophet responded, “What do I care? Send it to the mines! It’s old enough to work now”.

And all the mighty lords of the dark lands heard the judgment that the prophet uttered, and knew that he was blessed by Hashut indeed.

Thank you! I appreciate that.

Some more photos of my progress.

I absolutely love the Russian Alternative models. They are so detailed in all of the right ways and have so much character. I’m really enjoying painting them.

I’m very thankful for the community here for sharing the ability to print them. These models are all 3d printed, can you believe that!

Hi all. haven’t really had time for painting recently, but I would feel bad not having anything posted for a while, so here’s what’s on the workbench.

Not much more in the painting way of things recently. Just haven’t felt much inspiration.
On the positive side, the legion itself is being slowly assembled and primed!
This will be a true horde of the dark lands - my 2000 point list boasts 60 hobgoblin infantry (not to mention wolves and whatnot) and 30 infernal guard. Definitely more of a casual style army but I enjoy it.

After much testing and experiments I’ve finally arrived at a lava base that I am happy with.

Recipe is starting with an acrylic titanium white paint from Pro Acryl and then using cad yellow and cad red oil paints to create a bright and imposing lava effect. I add a touch of titanium white oil to the yellow for the ultimate “hot spot”. Hope you enjoy! I think now I am ready to move forward. This was the last piece of the puzzle.

Ashurbanipal, why does it take so long for you to update your painting blog?

A: probably because I paint the fingernails on hobgoblins

I managed to complete 20 of these fine upstanding citizens this past week.

Also I wanted to show you the beginnings of the process for how I achieve my blue tone. First I lay down acrylics like AK ultramarine and Vallejo violet. Then I do an oil glaze over with Ultramarine Deep. As you can see the previous colors shine through but in a very rich tone!

I’ll title today’s post “The Many Faces of the Lapis Legion”.

One of the main reasons I chose Russian Alternative to be the basis for my army was how varied and different the faces were. They are all angry and dour SOBs being Chaos Dwarfs, yes, but I think we can all agree that there is a spectrum therein.

I once again have to thank the fine fellows of this forum for coordinating getting these scanned. I had held out for a long while before finding them. So thank you! And I hope you enjoy this selection of faces I’ve worked on.

Fantastic in blue.

These are going to look great when you get them on those glorious lava bases

Thank you very much!

I have one minor update: instead of cork I’m actually going to be using bark. Of course in my perfectionist tendencies I loved the lava part but the cork just didn’t look very…obsidian. The oak bark on the other hand looks great. Stay tuned! I hope to have some bases all set up this month.

Thanks again for the kind words.

My tip with using bark (I’ve only ever used pine bark) is to cover it thoroughly with PVA (slightly watered down) or add some armaments because, in my experience, the layers have very unpredictable natural adherency. And you don’t want your models to be safely glued to the bark only to have the bark split so they fall off anyway.

That is excellent advice! I’d actually been pondering this very point after some initial tests.
The glue seems to be the best path forward here since I have a bunch on hand. Thank you so much.

Hobgobla akaza! I’ve finally completed my 30 hobgoblin warriors. What a trip.

I’m also working on a (still WIP) sigil of the overseer based on a victory stele of Esarhaddon conquering the Egyptians.

It took long enough but I now have a mass quantity of lava bases for my infantry and wolves. I really love how they came out and hope you like them too!
