The Remarshalling of Uzkulak

Don’t think I’ll be altering the gutplates; my plan is to go for a style similar to that of the older ogre minis, before they were redesigned to be tubby. Eg:

I love this aesthetic so much. Definitely prefer it to moderns

My copy of Irregular Wars’ Fantastic Battles arrived yesterday so I’ve been flicking through it and spent things morning working out a rough first draft of an army list for Chaos Dwarfs for it; the rule book does contain a list for ‘Ziggurat Dwarves’, but I don’t feel like it captures the flavour of Chaos Dwarfs (which isn’t in and of itself a bad thing - no reason all ‘evil dwarf’ factions need be cut with the same cookie cutter  ), and in fact the rules specifically encourage people to make their own lists, saying that the lists provided in the book are more examples of what you can do with the unit creation rules than proscriptive.

I’ve omitted the generic characters from this list as they’re identical to the character types listed in the book.

A quick rundown of how company creation works - you start by picking one of seven unit types (Elite, Formed, Irregular, Fantastic Beast, Dragon, Ordnance Battery or Vehicle). You then customise it by picking up to three traits, plus a racial trait. To benefit from that racial trait, at least half the companies in your army must be from that race, so only one race can have a racial trait in your army regardless of how many races there are in the list (for example, above there are Chaos Dwarfs, Hobgoblins, Black Orcs, Orcs, Goblins, Ogres and Giants, but only Chaos Dwarfs, including subspecies such as Bull Centaurs and the lammasu (possibly a bit of a stretch for this one, but I’m counting it due to it possibly being a mutation from Dwarf stock), get a racial trait, which in this case is ‘Proud’ to represent the arrogance of Chaos Dwarfs and how they look down upon other races).

Each trait has a point cost which modifies the company’s point value and each one will either alter the profile somehow or have a special rule attached; eg Formed companies normally have no shooting capacity so giving a formed company the ‘Barrage’ trait changed their shooting from -/- to 3/-; the ‘Proud’ trait meanwhile protects them from (in WHFB terms) panic caused by the loss of nearby friendly units. Not all traits are positive however, and correspondingly usually have a negative point cost; eg ‘Unreliable’ gives a penalty for the pre-game Mishap roll and for Impetuous tests (any units not within the Command area of any characters have to test each turn and have a chance to act on their own rather than do what you want them to) and as such reduces the cost of a company.

More on the ogres; bought an old orc Bloodbowl team to bump the numbers up a bit. There’s a slight size difference, but otherwise I think they’re a close match to the Goffs:

Once I’m done they should look close enough to match the Goffs, but different enough to add some variety.

The Blorcs from the team are going to be unit champions while the Blitzers will be standard bearers:

Lastly the Throwers will be conscripted to help crew my rocket batteries; the bloodbowl balls they hold look to be a close match to the Tjubling rockets, so will be modified to look like the ogres are carrying spare ammo:

In other news, I did a quick tally of what I’ve got so far using the above list, and I’ve got enough to do a 500pt Chaos Dwarf army and almost enough to do a 500pt ogre army; will need to have a think over how to proceed (could round the ogres out to the full 500pts and thus have two armies to do small trial games with that I can then combine to make a 1k army, or I could go straight to doing a 1k CD army and then doing say, a 1k Empire army for them to face).

Today’s update:

Been digging through my bits box to try and find suitable weapons to give the other ex-Bloodbowl minis but no luck, so going to have to keep an eye out on eBay for any suitable weapons to pop up.

Also, forgot to post this yesterday, dug these out of a drawer yesterday; they were originally going to be K’daai in my WHFB army years back but never got around to finishing them. Think they’ll make for great Kollossii in 15mm.

Your army is such an inspiration to my own 15mm force. I hadn’t realised it was yours until I read through this entire blog, I had just been picking up the occasional post and not put everything into context.

I love the converted shields on the warriors, such a clever way to give them a completely different look and I’m planning to use the shield as a way to identify different units.
The scale armour is also really clever, but damn it must be a lot of work! Having seen it I now feel like I have to give it a try, but honestly I don’t see myself doing more than a single unit

For basing I’m using 4 minis on a 40x20mm base and I’m now tempted to see if I can’t get 6 Hobgoblins onto a base, but it feels like it’s going to be really packed - I don’t know how you managed to get 8 on there!

I’ve also stolen your idea for a Lammasu (basing it on a gryffhound because it is honestly genius and will turn any lird into a lord :man_facepalming:t3:

P.s. forgot to add - I’ve had all of those plastic orc/k models at one time or another and would never have thought of combining them with 15mm but it is a really clever idea.
What weapons are you looking for - I have a bitzbox that can be raided…

Thanks. I wouldn’t say the armour’s a lot of work per say, but it definitely pays to take it a bit at a time.

8 hobgoblins on a base is a bit packed, but I think that helps make them look like a large mass swarming forwards.

I’m looking for anything that matches the style of the Goff axes, so probably orc axes, maces, swords, etc.

Yeah, I’m thinking a unit of Immortals in golden scalemail will look amazing! Looking forward to seeing yours painted.
Do you do one arm at a time, then the other, then the torso?

Definitely! It looks great and like they are cowards trying to tough it out in a crowd.

I’ll take some photos and post them later…

Yep, do one arm at a time then the torso; much easier than trying it all at once (and no risk of accidentally smushing the parts you’ve already worked on when doing another bit  ).

Oh, I’ve made that mistake many times on my own - no need to do it whilst copying someone else :joy:

Do let us know how the rules turn out - personally I feel that very few releases each year are actually anything new or interesting. They usually rehash old ideas, perhaps add a mildly interesting new mechanic (Wrath of Kings) but that’s about it.
I’ve basically stopped buying new rulesets because they so rarely actually are new. Or improve on anything that came before.

So, I’m always eager for something that will prove me wrong. Chain of Command was my latest find, for WW2, which supplements the very odd CrossFire from the '80s (which I love).

Will do if I ever get a game in, who knows how this curse of Nurgle is going to disrupt things for. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Continuing to chip away at the ogres; started adding armour to some of the Bloodbowl minis and given a couple bits of jewellery to some, and added a chin to one of the artillery slaves.

Sorry it took me so long, but I don’t seem to have as much as I had hoped…

@Lord_of_Uzkulak - I’ve got spare chaos warriors arms of that design. Mostly the non weapon side that holds the shield. I’ve made all mine now so no use for them. If you need some I’m happy to send

for Hashut, they are fantastic as is!
have you already planned the color scheme?

Not for the ogres; for the Chaos dwarfs I’m going to do a gold and bone/off white scheme.
