[TOW] New Player

Hey brothers, looking for some advice. I want to build a 2k Chaos Dwarf army (mainly using Lost Kingdom minis) and I was wondering what do I need to start playing. I’ll be at Adepticon, mainly for 40k, but I hope to play some Old World too. I have the PDF rules for the army, along with this list I’m building towards. I’m guessing I’ll need to buy the Old World Rulebook. Anything else? Never played Old World, or Fantasy, so very excited to bust out some movement trays. Any feedback on my list is also much appreciated.

I will refrain from list feedback because I haven’t played TOW yet - but what I can tell you, as someone who started again with square bases in 2021, that the deployment phase is absolutely fundamental to winning or losing the game.

You might think you know this from 40k already, but you have to understand how much slower your forces will move, and the level of obstruction they cause one another. So just be careful to set up faceoffs your guys can win, and be cynical about the mobility of your infantry. If you put down some Infernal Guard on a flank, they will most likely stay in that third of the board for the duration of the game.

TOW is a big, complex system with a LOT of rules and so it will pay to learn your units in detail. Consider making cue cards so you know all their abilities in detail - that way when a dynamic situation arises, you will remember which ones apply, saving you both time and making sure you don’t kick yourself for missing a trigger that could have made a difference.

Cheers mate, well met!

Looks like a perfectly fine army list. Only thing you def should change is getting rid of the “Steam Carriage” upgrade on your war machines. It has only one function, and that is enabling your war machines to be towed by an Iron Daemon, which you don’t have in your list, so that’s 30 points wasted. I would highly suggest using 25 of those points to make your Senechal into a Battle Standard Bearer.

Chitz has already mentioned a lot of very key points towards your first game. I’ll only add two more things to be aware of:

  • Your army does not have a dedicated fighter character. Your Senechal and Sorcerer-Prophet are decent enough, but you might run into armies with a some truly fearsome duellists.
  • Secondly, you have relatively few but expensive units. There might be battles, where you’re outnumbered 2:1 or so.

You don’t need to change your list to address these points, just something to be aware of.

Got it, I wasn’t sure what Steam Carriage meant, is there another source of rules aside from the army pdf? Also what would a good dedicated fighter be? I was thinking of dropping the hobgoblins for some centaurs for some extra punch.

Oh yeah, most of the special rules are explained in the main Rulebook, and the rules for Black Orcs and the Hellcannon are in Ravening Hordes.

Our best fighter characters are the Infernal Castellan and Bull Centaur Taur’ruk. They are both capable, but will still draw the short stick against the game’s best. It’s just what it is.

I would keep the Hobgoblins in. You need those to screen and redirect and chase war machines and the like.
