KramDratta:

So here’s a recap of my game against the Dwarfs, who had:

Runesmith + Anvil

BSB

35 Longbeard rangers FC (horde)

40 Warriors FC (horde)

15 Miners

10 Crossbow-dwarfs

2x Grudge Throwers

Cannon

Gyrocopter

Deployement: In the middle of the battlefield we had this large battlefield. I was out deployed, having a unit of hobgoblins & the Black orcs on the left side of the building (opposite a marsh), a unit of Warriors in the centre & the other unit of Warriors & the hobgoblins on the right. The Lvl 4 on Lammasu went on the left, so that the building covered me from the cannon & one of the Grudgethrowers.

He deployed everything opposite my right, including the rangers & miners (which I was not expecting) & thus the left flank never managed to see combat. He got first turn & with the grudge thrower took out the Lammasu with one shot (using the re-roll to get a hit & did 5 wounds). This left my general around 20" away from the building (and me being a very bright spark had swapped ‘Steed of Shadows’ with Miasma, instead of the Pendulum.

The earthhakers proved themselves, taking out a grudge thrower & halving his movement & stopping some shooting.

In about Turn 3, the Warriors on the rightcharged took a charge from the miners front & the Gyro in the flank. I took out the gyro and half the miners, who fled & were caught.

In the centre, the warriors (joined by the general by using the lore attribute of the Shadow) charged the Longbeards. I managed to cast Enfeebling Foe (Irresistible Force) on them, reducing them to Strength 1. I got an 8 on the miscast & suffered a wound on all the Level 1s. However, this turned the combat in may favour and broke the Longbeards. He fled 5", I pursued 3" :frowning:

In his turn 6, he needed the charge with the Anvil to capture some points ( I had only lost one Earthshaker, 12 hobgoblins & a bolt thrower) so he went for Ancient Power on the Anvil, which promptly rolled a 1, followed by another 1, and practically gave me the game. We counted the points after the game, the result was a minor to me (if we did not count his general)

Re the Spirit Leech spam, I can’t say if it worked or not, as he always had more (or equal) dispel dice than I had & the only spell I cast was an Irresistible Force. Will have to try it again, hopefully against someone with a lesser magic defence.

Overall I’m loving this army, so once again a big thank you for taking the time to

Glimpse the Void:

Thanks for the play by play, i’m glad it worked out well for you. Were your death mages close enough for your spells to be effective? I know that you said he had a lot of dice, but I was curious as to whether or not you had a hard time getting them into position. I’ve always worried about taking them as the range is so short.

Oh, and smart thinking on the steed of shadows. I throw that back everytime, but I’ll have to remember how useful it was for you here. Did his horde of warriors have sword and shields? I don’t know what kind of options vanilla dwarves come with…

Baggronor:

Nice, you won.

His army looks like the usual anvil list. I run something similar only I have 24 Rangers, 24 Warriors and 2x18 Hammerers. I find the horde units too unwieldy and easily blocked by chaff.

The Anvil misfire is something I am very familiar with, indeed mine takes any opportunity to detonate itself :expressionless:

KramDratta:

@Glimpse: I started casting 2 Spirit Leeches @ his BSB per phase (using 2/3 dice each time depending on the pool), at first going for the 10+, the going for the 7+ in one particular turn.

@Baggronor: I too am finding that moving a horde unit is problematic, not to mention that any wheeling will reduce the distance moved, as the arc is that much bigger. However, the horde formation has its uses, especially if you swift reform then move into a building. With the horde formation, I found that casting one spell will have a greater effect on the combat, as it will affect that many extra models and generate/deny that amount of combat res.
