[Archive] Anyone else considering swapping to 40k?

Grimstonefire:

So I’ve been into WHFB for about 18 years now, crazy. In that time I’ve never really once considered actually starting a 40k army, as I much prefer the fantasy setting.

But since the end of the world and getting bored of painting massive armies, I’m strongly considering taking the plunge into 40k.

If I’m honest I’ve been considering this for a couple of years now.

Just trying something new to keep things interesting.

Shame in a way as I have a relatively nice skaven army mostly painted, a reasonable (2k ish) dwarf army (half painted). Neither of which will likely be finished any time soon.

But feeling it’s time for a change.

Parish:

I share all your feelings so far… Last week I started a Black templar army, only 750 pts and I won t go any further before a couple of month. but yes a went for 40k shame on me :frowning:

Thommy H:

Pretty sure they aren’t mutually exclusive.

+1 to this, unless you literally have space for only one system.

Hill_Billy_Bub:

I already play 40k necrons. Infact I started out with necrons before fantasy

Abecedar:

Not really at all. I do have a small Sisters army I was given but I have no real interest in at for the moment

tjub:

Nah, 40k doesn’t tempt me at all… But Ive been doing various 15mm related stuff as well as Malifaux. Im sure we’ll keep WFB as before, but the ET were really swing up game wise for us. Guess we will be back at 2-3 games a year out of nostalgia again.

Admiral:

Am into both WHFB, 40k and Lotr. Will continue to be so, and hopes to expand into small GW specialist games like Blood Bowl and Dreadfleet, eventually even into historicals.

The closest thing to swapping GW wargame systems we’ve ever done in my hobby group, is having periods when we focus on one over the others. Why have one good thing when you can have all?

Bloodbeard:

I don’t like the 40k scene around here. A couple of my very good friends play the game. But there are so many rules, data sheet, expansions I cant wrap my head around it. Even when they play “casual” it seems way to competitive for me.

I do like the look of a lot of the miniatures in 40k however. And I do have some different plastic space marines lying around - gonna nurglyfi them some day.

I’m getting my sci-fi fix from Mantics Deadzone however. And have just pledged in the Warpath kickstarter.

Doombeard:

I love 40k, it was always my 1st game. Haven’t played it since about 2004 when I had a Tyranids army. I bought Zanthrax’s Squats army on here recently, not sure I have the time to play them though if anyone is interested in them. I’d like to just rock up to a gw store and use their mini’s some time for a game. I’d buy a dark eldar force but their lack of super heavy firepower and stuff puts me off. They brought out the voidraven bomber recently but they are still a bit meh compared to vanilla eldar

Baggronor:

I used to love 40k but then they ruined the rules (for me, the 6" move thing was a terrible idea) and made the look too silly (Space Wolves riding giant wolves - really?). I loved the original CSM codex by Andy Chambers back when they were more like rogue marines than cartoonish super-villains with robot dragons. If I were to get back into it I would go for Tau or Eldar, but just don’t like the system for the same reasons I don’t like AoS. Keep getting tempted to do a squad of CSMs again though… just one really well converted squad of 10,000 year old, ruthless killers in knackered power armour and a rickety Rhino…

I have been trying Kings of War though, and despite my initial skepticism I’m getting quite into it - mainly because the Undead and Abyssal Dwarfs play so much better than their WHFB counterparts; 1500pts of Abyssal Dwarfs is the equivalent of 3500pts of LoA in models - you get an awesome spectacle and those troops that are unusably bad in WHFB like Ironsworn and Blood Knights are good in KoW. The rules are ok, less character than WHFB but some things are more elegant. Sticking with 8th for my Orcs though, the KoW orc list is very po-faced.

Can’t say swapping as I started out in 40k, but as others, modern 40k doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Too much of Buy Da Biggez Noob, rofl teenager, nowadays. I was hooked by the evil brooding CSM (continually getting shafted kinda builds an understanding for them, seriously, it’s like players are treated like the original CSM).
It’s like dolls or something and the ordinary fighting guy the game was about has been droned out by anime mecha ****.

I’m also a bit unhappy with the idea that I’d reward GW by going back to buying more stuff when they already shafted me once.

Talk your mates into playing older editions, theneBay a 2nd ed rulebook and IG codex then go and buy some cheap WWI/II minis and you have a Guard army without giving GW a single penny ;)

Or better, buy some sweet Victoria Lamb miniatures and enjoy the looks of envy of everyone playing against you. :)
If you want it cheaper, check out Dreamforge.

40k will most likely turn into AoS, So Good luck

Hahaha, such a turn of events wouldn't be too surprising, given the current GW studio's attitude to how 40k's sister fantasy game developed. :)

Grimstonefire:

As long as it’s SM based what I collect I’ll never be unsupported again!

I’m thinking Legion of the Damned.  Appeals to my creativity whilst still allowing for a very low model count.  I do like the 40k fluff as a whole (enough to buy into it), but the low model count is the biggest appeal.

gIL^:

Personally i am done with GW, I have loads of models to paint, Boxes of infernal guard, Enough for AoS, Frostgrave, Mordheim and a bloodbowl team so it can keep me going for the next 5 years lol.

We have all older books actually. Just don't particularly care for the earliest editions either. 2nd was just before my time but my experience of that wasn't encouraging.

Since I'm not home as much anymore I can't really get people to play older editions. If we don't stick to the newest of the living game there'd be no club left. What with GW killing Warhammer...

JMR:

I’m actually looking forward to see how Warpath: Firefight develops. I’d like to play a sci-fi game using a limited amount of models and be able to fight on a richly decorated terrain. I’m thinking 3-4 squads of 5-10 man each, a walker or jetbike or two, or maybe a single tank.

I thought I’d maybe enjoy small games of Warhammer 40k, but I dunno… It seemed a bit dull.

Besides, Space Marines get on my nerves big time. A like a more realistic or “hard” sci-fi. In 40k that’d be Eldar or Tau for me, but not the gothic knights in spaaaaaace!
