[Archive] Artisan's Contest #6 - Ends 31st December(1)

cornixt:

About 12 inches. Mine’s that long but I don’t use it as a rule…

Grimstonefire:

Also, I fail to see how this fits in with the Artisan's Contest "theme" which was supposed to be a competition for the less artistically/modelling inclined and thus skewed toward other forms of creativity.

This AC is a GH by another name.  What gives?

GRNDL
The theme was never set in stone.  Painting of miniatures is not the same as painting/ building terrain.  AC would get rather boring if it alternated between rules and fluff (which are themselves skewed towards story/ rules writers ;)).

I'm struggling to decide what to do, I've got a few ideas in mind.

Legend has it by the way, that the day GRNDL is actually happy with a CDO contests' topic, spacetime will break apart and the whole universe will be swallowed by a big white cuttlefish. ;P

EDIT:

cornixt
You really had to say that, didn't you! ^^

Kera foehunter:

cool 12" i know how big that is

Grimstonefire
Er, yes, actually, it is...
AC would get rather boring if it alternated between rules and fluff (which are themselves skewed towards story/ rules writers ;)).

Grimstonefire
Or would be rather boring if it had you doing the same kind of thing the GH gets you to do... You know, all that modelling, painting, etc.

Pyro Stick:

Ill enter this is i have the time. Ill probably do the shrine idea i had for the previous AC since its not that big.

Gar Shadowfame:

guys its not about size, its about how you use it :D

Gar Shadowfame
and this rule works also for Artesan contest ;) back to the hobby guys and gals :D

Gar Shadowfame:

But yet again i renew my question, does the terrain have to be game viable, so it has to fit on the table etc

Grimstonefire:

In terms of wargaming I think for it to be terrain it should be viable to put it on the battlefield?

To be honest I doubt we’ll be that strict about this, if you are planning something that fits within the size limit and is CD/ hobgoblin themed we’ll probably let it in anyway.

I’ve settled on what to do, I’ve started building already (remembering to take lots of pics). We don’t have enough terrain articles in WoH, so anyone who makes any terrain should take loads of WIP photos for future articles.

Baggronor:

This is a good point, I think. Surely AC should be for aspects of the hobby not catered for by GH? Bit late for this one, but still...

So where's the illustration AC? :)

cornixt:

Due to the size limit, it is likely to be game viable regardless of what you do. Even a huge inpenetrable mountain is an obsticle to avoid during the game.

I find that constructing terrain is a completely different skill to painting models. Unless you are building terrain out of miniature-sized and detailed pieces…

Gar Shadowfame:

thats what i mean, a xroads with waystone is a terrain piece, but its hardly suitabe for a game, as it will get damaged with movement trays, and it hardly represents any terrain described in the rulebook. so thats why i ask

Grimstonefire:

I see.

Sure, any sort of terrain would be fine, even if it would be ‘incomplete’ like a crossroads or a lava river section. It doesn’t have to represent something from the rulebook.

Kera foehunter:

I think that the gh and artian is starting to become the same

this is how i feel . im so out done by these other people it not worth trying

anymore ! this is me ! not to take away from the contest!

but i do not have the skills to compeat in these contest anymore!!

it like going to cool or not minn

where your a 5 and you see 8 and 9 s

im just a person that love converting and painting im trying to improve as i go !! you ask !! so i told you how i realy feel !!

Zanko:

I’m a bit confused!

I don’t understand the problem of making a terrain in the AC!

Last time it was to write a short story and perhaps next time it will be painting a portrait of Zathan the Black or what ever!

These are all topics different of the “normal” GH!

IMO the AC should integrate different aspects of creativity!

                 :hashut

@ Kera: I have also not the skills to compare me and me work with others of CDO! But IMO that’s not really important! The fun and the
            different results are important!

Willmark:

If people/anyone only competed in contests that they felt they could win then there would be very few enteries. It’s not about winning it’s about having fun with it.

Grimstonefire:

Not to mention that people may make something they actually use.  I for one know my battles will look much nicer with a CD theme with the terrain I’m building, though considering it’s normally a smooth grass field that wouldn’t be hard

Hashut’s Blessing:

Personally, I find terrain making and model making/painting very different: they use entirely differnet materials, techniques skills etc. Just my thoughts.

As for the direction of AC, it wasn’t much liked at first, when it was decided to be about the conception of entries, more than the final production (in the sense that GH is), but people didn’t like this, so we have tried to expand it to be that GH is modelling and painting (primarily painting), whereas AC is now about any non-model aspect of the hobby, maybe witht he occasional gaming model involved…

Baggranor: we had an artistry AC at one point (I believe the third?), but nobody entered that portion  If we get some more interest in it, we may well consider exploring this easpect a bit more.

To those that are saying they don’t want to enter because they feel they have no chance of winning, AC was slated horrendously as being a “let’s make a competition for anyone that’s not able to win at GH” situation, when in reality it was to showcase the other talents that members may have. Both AC and Gh are to generate some friendly competition, give people some fun and hopefully inspire people. The idea is to enjoy the competition and do your best: if you win, excellent and you get a medal for your profile. If not, you get to say you competed, you get some slaves (which some members may not be bothered about) and you get to have completed something that you should be able to use in one way or another.

I hope people see this more as a case of trying to explain the aims and to help people be a little more positive about this, rather than me/the staff lecturing you all and saying you’re wrong for disliking it.

As for my entry, I’m still trying to pin my idea and then decide how to go about achieving it

Borador:

Looking forward to see the entries, I am pretty bad at terrainpieces so this could be very useful (good examples ftw :D)

Best of luck to all who are going to enter!
