Khaas:

Today I suffered something of a setback, it started well enough. I loaded the airbrush and began laying down layers of color. My compressor is going to die any day now, but that wasn’t the problem…

As I prepared to mount the first Dragon Ogre to it’s newly painted base I realized I was just about out of glue. I got the Shartak mounted, then realized I was completely out of glue. So, I finished up the Shartak and did some preliminary painting on the remaining Dragon Ogres. Now, I’ll wait until the end of the week for payday and more glue so I can call this project officially finished.

That said, don’t expect anymore pictures until the weekend as I’ll hold off until the unit is complete for some group photos of the box set before delivering to the client.

Meanwhile, here’s the finished Shartak…

Dragon Ogre Shartak:

Detail of the Base

------------

This project has given me the opportunity to play around with some kits I wouldn’t normally get a chance to, I’ll be giving my thoughts on them on the blog a bit later. The experience definitely gave me some things to talk about.

Yodrin:

The pictures are not showing in your last post, at least not for me…

Khaas:

Yeah Yodrin, refresh the page. Photobucket is being a little buggy with the pics lately.

Khaas:

The Dragon Ogres are finished, which means the commission is finished. I’m waiting on the final highlights and touch ups to dry now, then I will get pics in the lightbox with the big camera and prepare everything for delivery to the client. The Dragon Ogres are interesting to paint, more on that later. For now, enjoy some pictures.

I present the Creatures of the Chaos Waste:

Not a bad few days work.

ryanamandaanna:

This is a glorious collection. Great work!

Yodrin:

The dragon ogres came out great, and became an absolute sweet unit. You did a great job on the commission, your customer should be really happy:)

Khaas:

Thanks guys, I spoke to the client at lunch. Depending on how things go this afternoon, I may meet him tonight to give him the models. Failing that, I’ll deliver them to him tomorrow. I’m anxious to see his army at the tournament in January, though I’m sure (as he is) that it won’t take the place by storm it should look impressive having so many monsters on the table. And will likely be amazing fun to play.

Khaas:

Since I’ve got the commission finished it’s time to really start thinking about the next step. Having said that, I’ve plotted out the expansion of my Warriors. Below is the “next step” for them. After the holiday is finished I’ll be preparing for my first tourney of the new season, and getting back to work on the hobby. 2014 means I’ll be expanding the Warriors, finishing my Chaos Dwarfs (still deciding on a Kdai model) and building a pretty meaty Nurgle themed Ogre army.

Here’s what’s next on the slab, you may notice some of these models are already finished as they’re part of my existing army.

THE GREAT HOST OF THE DESPOILER

WARRIORS OF CHAOS & DAEMONS OF CHAOS

Tuck in guys, this is going to be a long one. I’ve been thinking a lot about building up my army for some big games, and the next step for me is a Great Host as detailed in the Tamurkhan book. Seeing as I am already dedicated to the ruinous powers of Nurgle, it only makes sense that I’d continue my journey as a true Paragon of Decay.

The basics for a Great Host are simple, you build a list using models from at least two of the following army books:

- Warriors of Chaos

- Beastmen

- Daemons of Chaos

I currently neither interest of models to field a Beastmen force, so Daemons and Warriors it is! I have some fluff that goes with the Ascendancy of the Despoiler, and the inclusion of Daemons of Nurgle in his army makes a lot of sense considering that fluff. The Great Host rules are very similar to allied rules from the BRB, but with a few differences. First, there can be only one General and BSB. Those must be from the same army book. And while models share affiliation (ie Mark of Nurgle or Daemon of Nurgle), they are considered Sworn Disciples and can use the General’s Inspiring Presence and BSBs Stand Your Ground rules.

In addition to all of this, there are some other rules that effect gameplay, such as a +1 Ward Save for the Paragon (3+ max). With all of this said, I’ve been constructing a list that would take advantage of these rules and the models available in my collection. This presents a few challenges, not the least of which is deciding on a list in the first place. Army Builder doesn’t have native support for the Tamurkhan Great Host, though it does have some of the special characters and units available. So, I had to improvise. In the end I had to load and reload specialized lists for each selection (Rare, Special, Core, etc) and enter raw data into a spreadsheet. It took a couple of hours of fiddling before I was finally satisfied, and now I present the list in it’s entirety, along with some notes on my choices…

CORE

My core is made primarily of rock hard infantry, with four hordes no less. It’s not typical of a Warriors list, there are no hounds for example. This is largely a limitation of the Great Host rules which require you to spend the minimum core points exclusively on Sworn Disciples, units that share affiliation with the army’s Paragon…

30x The Condemned, Warriors of Nurgle (GW, FC, MoN)

- Banner of Eternal Flame

30x The Condemned, Marauders of Nurgle (Shd, FC, MoN)

Chaos Chariot (MoN)

Chaos Chariot (MoN)

49x Plaguebearers of Nurgle (FC, DoN)

49x Plaguebearers of Nurgle (FC, DoN)

The Heralds each go in a unit of Plaguebearers…

SPECIAL

I’ve never really thought of Warriors of Chaos as a Hammer and Anvil army, rather I think of them as a sack of hammers kind of army. Offense in Depth is the rule of the day with this army, with multiple threats on all fronts. Even the more defensive units tend to be more like the aggressive units of some other armies, especially as the Tally rises. A few things really stand out here, especially at this points level because if there’s anything a Warriors of Chaos army has to offer it’s a robust Special section…

37x The Defilers, Chosen of Nurgle (GW, FC, MoN)

- War Banner

Khaas, Keldor, and Festus all go in this unit…

18x Borel’s Reavers, Chaos Knights of Nurgle (EW, FC, MoN)

- Razor Standard

Borel goes in this unit…

Rot, Gorebeast Chariot (MoN)

Ruin, Gorebeast Chariot (MoN)

3x Beast of Nurgle (DoN)

3x Beast of Nurgle (DoN)

3x Beast of Nurgle (DoN)

RARE

The Daemons are pretty much business as usual, the Warriors on the other hand are an opportunity to let my hair down. Normally my rare section consists of Skullcrushers, and more Skullcrushers. But for this army I’m sticking to the devotees of Nurgle, which means some fun but often neglected models get a chance to shine…

3x Plague Drones of Nurgle (Mus, Std, Venom, DoN)

3x Plague Drones of Nurgle (Mus, Std, Venom, DoN)

Soulgrinder (Claw, Torrent, DoN)

Soulgrinder (Claw, Torrent, DoN)

Chaos War Mammoth (Warhsrine, MoN)

Moksha Kinslaughterer, Giant (MoN)

Gibbon Fleshharrower, Giant (MoN)

Sheol Hellfist, Giant (MoN)

Khaas:

I really didn’t expect to do any hobby work over the holiday break, I’ve spent the last week cleaning and rearranging my work area. However, I moved my airbrush station and wanted to see how it worked in it’s new location on the opposite side of the desk (spoiler alert: it works beautifully). I’ll be upgrading my compressor and airbrush soon, probably in late January or February (more on that later).

So, I decided to finish up my “Counts as” War Mammoth. In my 10,000 point list I’ll be using it as a Warshrine. I’ve magnetized it so I can switch it out and use it as a mount for my Lord and his Chosen. The Warshrine piece I can use as an objective marker as well. So, this one basically knocked several items off of the old to do list at once.

DETAILS

Just need to add snow to the base and a little to the beast’s body and I’ll call this one complete.

Objective Marker/Shrine

Also, here’s a peak at what I’ve been up to in the Lair of Unconsciounable Mischief:

This week I’ve been turning this into this. That’s about 30 Chaos Knights condensed into freezer bag. My Warriors alone were taking up two large plastic totes (all unassembled models), now they’re all neatly packed away off the sprue and in similar bags in a drawer under my desk. The Daemons have their own drawer, as do the Chaos Dwarfs, Ogres, and terrain.

It’s definitely going to much easier to work and not feel cramped in my work area once I’m finished, 2014 is going to be a good year for the hobby.

Yodrin:

Beautiful, awesome job!!!

Kera foehunter:

Nice!! love the ogres !

turbotomte:

Wow! Great thread. LOVE the nurgle stuff. You’ve really pulled off a disgusting painting scheme for them  The skullcrushers looks great (I can see the spellcrow bitz here and there  ). I have a nurgle WoC side project, and this is great inspiration.

Also, was gonna ask. How do you paint the armor of your infernal guard? I’m looking for that dark metal effect for mine. Are you using GW’s new technical color for oxidating, or something else?

The guys in this picture is what I’m talking about:

Cheers

Admiral:

Agreed, this thread contains great hobby output.

Khaas:

Thanks everyone, I’m glad you guys like it. Now, with the new Year rapidly approaching, it’s time to get serious. I’ve already started working on 100 Plaguebearers for the Great Host, I’ll probably be focusing on this until the full 10,000 points is complete. Which shouldn’t be so long as you might think. I’ll be finishing the Chaos Dwarfs as I go, working on a unit here and there to break up the monotony of all of those Nurgle units. Beyond that, who knows what I’ll be putting out in 2014: Ogres are definitely something I’m interested in doing. And of course, there’s always going to be more Warriors (infected devotees of Slaanesh and Khorne for example). So, I’m sure the plog and my blog will continue to go strong throughout the year.

And before I go, let me address your question turbotomte:

I use a combination of techniques for my aged bronze and copper. After painting the base metalics, I add a watered down mixture of Vallejo Verdigris and GW Dark Angels Green. The watering down part is essential, you want a consistency slightly thinner than milk (if you’ve ever mixed paint for an airbrush you’ll have a good idea of what I mean). Brush it on, and wipe gently off with a clean cloth. You should end up with the verdigris in the crevasses.

I also use Vallejo Weathering Pigments, there’s a green that I use on larger pieces a lot in conjunction with the above method. It’s just like any weathering pigment, I use makeup sponge wedges to apply these though, they hold up better than cotton swabs in the end and they’re cheap.

And finally, I have recently started using GW Niktha Oxide (spelling?), it’s the right consistency straight from the bottle. It’s perfect for smaller jobs or when time is a factor, it’s also great for layering the verdigris. On larger “outdoor” pieces list statues you’ll notice layers of verdigris, so I’ll start with the hand mixed batch, and then add the lighter GW version over that in dripping patterns. Then, I’ll water down some pure Vallejo Verdigris and add even finer drips of it to the finished piece. It’s more time consuming, but it looks great. I’m especially a fan of this layering on things like Nurgle Chariots and other large models with high metallic surface areas.

Hope that helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Khaas:

The bro hole is just about ready, so time for some news:

I ordered 2 sets of Corrupters of Apocalypse with Great Weapons. These will be my Chosen of Nurgle, I’ve got 37 of them accompanying Khaas, Keldor, and Festus. Meanwhile, I decided to get something off of the shelf and finish it while the urge was upon me. I picked up the Dreadstone Blight kit specifically for my display board, however I dropped that when I decided to remake the board from scratch. The tower itself was in pretty fair shape, so I decided to salvage it before it ended up getting abused. First step was to remove it from the old board with a saw, if there’s one thing I can say for my terrain and display boards… they’re built to last.

With it removed, I cleaned up the excess foam and miscellaneous remnants from the old board and attached the base of the tower to a bass wood round I had on hand. I then carefully removed the upper level of the tower, to add some details to the ground floor. I built up the ground around the tower using pieces of plaster, broken statue pieces from Scibor, pine bark, and of course my special earthworks mixture. I added some Vallejo Pumice Medium and glued some sand in a few places, then it was time to paint.

I went with black, grey, and then brown with a light drybrush of a very light grey. I used some GW Nurgles Rot to add some slimey accents. Then began weathering the second floor of the tower. With the tower completely reassembled I added some grass and snow, then finished. Went together pretty quickly honestly, and now I’ve got another piece of decrepit terrain for my collection. Next will be the Temple of Skulls and some hills, but no idea when I’ll get around to that.

Here’s Dreadstone Blight/Ruined Tower:

Yodrin:

Very nice piece, great job!!

Khaas:

It’s time for an update, and things being what they are it’s been difficult to put together a proper update with the holidays and the snow days. Right now we’re looking at a potential month long Christmas break here due to the downright devious timing of the white stuff. So, what have I been up to over the break?

For starters, I cleaned up the office and went about condensing my backlog of unassembled minis. I had been keeping 5 gallon plastic bins with unassembled minis inside. I decided to forego this, and have spent over a week clipping models from sprues and organizing them by way of labelled freezer bags, stored in drawers under my desk. When you have 20 Knights, 10 Chariots, etc still on sprues you take up a LOT of space, I condensed 6 of those bins to 4 drawers.

There’s a big reason for my newfound interest in keeping things tidy, I’ve picked up several commissions and now have an entire 109 model army of Trollbloods to paint for a client (with more on the way, same guy I did the Creatures of the Chaos Wastes for). Below are the models set out on the table. Additionally, I have a special project in the que for our very own Yodrin as well, I’m just waiting on the models to arrive. This project in particular is a bit like assembling something for COBRA, collecting parts from across the globe in order to assemble a most malevolent creation…

This space on the table is reserved for current projects, though it’s also a good spot to set up my light box when need strikes. Glad I went for the collapsable, travel option now. I’ve also created a space to set my display board next to my table as seen in the pic below.

As for my actual work space, I’ve made some changes here as well. I’ve removed the low shelf at the back of the desk and replaced it with my old racks for organizing my paint.

I’ll be using the carousel paint rack for airbrush paint, I’ve also moved my airbrush to a more convenient spot along with the other relevant paraphernalia.

I’ve also added a shelf that will act as my casting station, yes I’ve stated casting bits, bases, and terrain features. In the future, I’ll be offering some specialty items on my eBay store. But, it’s a bit early to talk too much about that…

And of course I’ve shuffled things around on the big shelf. I’ve allotted half to books and half to miniatures. Books to the left and minis to the right, with my Warriors taking the entire extreme right side. To the left of the Warriors are Chaos Dwarfs, Daemons of Chaos, and Ogres from top to bottom. With Terrain along the top of the shelf itself.

As you can see, I’ve been busy and the pace isn’t showing any signs of slowing. So, strap in, 2014 is going to be a bumpy ride!

Khaas:

I did a test model to the client’s specifications today, he is happy with it so moving on to phase 2. Tomorrow I’ll start the arduous task of assembling the last couple of minis and filling gaps in the bases (those slots really piss me off). The client didn’t want standard colors (obviously) and wanted just basic work on the bases. Essentially, just tabletop quality. So, I’ll be burning through this army over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to get my hands on about 5-6 bases though to finish it as several didn’t survive. Anyhow, here’s the test model. I’m probably not going to have a whole lot of updates on this project but figured I’d post something here at least. I’ll certainly have a finishing shot once it’s all finished (he’s already got a small box of reinforcements he wants me to work on soon).

Enjoy, I’ll be back to work on the Warhammer stuff VERY soon with a Chaos Dwarf Battle Standard Bearer for another client, just waiting on the parts.

Glimpse the Void:

Dude, I have been bouncing my hobby efforts back and forth between WOC, LPOC (little people of chaos), and my Circle of Orboros. Part of me feels really guilty, but seeing that I’m not the only one with Chaos A.D.D. really helps. I’m trying to remember that its my hobby, and that I do this for me, so just have fun. All that is to say, thanks for sharing

Khaas:

Thanks Glimpse, I’m glad I could help. Seriously, it really is a treat to find out I’ve inspired anyone in some way with what I’m doing. So if I’ve done that for you, then I can say I’m thoroughly pleased.

And now… model #2 for the project.

Today I broke out the airbrush so I could get up close and personal with one of my favorite models from this project, I don’t know what it is but I really like the sculpt. It’s a very dynamic pose, and it’s elegantly simple. Being made of pewter it’s pretty beefy, which is honestly my biggest gripe with these minis. I’m not a fan of pewter minis, it always feels like I have to be even more careful with them (especially when painting) as thin layers rub off exceptionally easy. Still, this one was a joy, the sculpt has a lot of nice detail work that pops with some water color washing and light highlights. I also spent more time on the base for this one, expanding on the exploding rubble at the base of the mini itself.

And since the client asked me over lunch about this, I thought I’d share: my process on these is quite simple and essentially how I paint all of my minis. I start with a Black primer, then Grey, and finally White. The Grey and White I apply top down in increasingly lighter layers. The idea being to establish gradations of tones, shadows, and highlights early. Then I drybryshed the stones with a light grey that I use for all of my terrain. Then, I apply washes of watered down inks to the skin and cloth (Secret Weapon Sewer Water for the Skin and a P3 Blue, name escapes me at the moment). Then it’s just drybrushing and highlights.

I spent 23 minutes total painting this from start to finish, but I really like the way he turned out. Sadly he’s missing a tooth, I’ll fabricate one a bit later to replace it. Let me know what you think.

And then painted…
