When the original Chaos Dwarf army book was released like all other army books then had an “Army Selection” list. For the Chaos Dwarfs 0-25% could be allies from the Orcs & Goblins and Chaos army books.
Also in 3rd editon rules before the release of the chaos dwarfs army book there was a “Warhammer Armies” book that had all the army allies list in one book.
Having allies is a great idea that adds a lot of fun to the game for veteran players and it generated interest in other armies for players.
Back in the days of 4/5th ed. you selected your army differently than you do these days:
Up to 50% of your total points could be characters - and you had to have a general which was either a sorcerer lord or a Chaos Dwarf lord, regardless of the total points size of the game;
Up to 25% of the total points value as Warmachines
At least 25% of the army totals had to be troops (CDs had to have at least 1 unit of 5 CD Warriors
Yeah, pretty much. When Dogs of War were first released (at the end of 5th Edition), they would be paid for from the allies quota. Since the allies rules were gotten rid of in 6th Edition, there was no way to do DoW without them taking up Rare slots or what have you.
Also there was a "Warhammer Armies" book that had all the army allies list in one book.

That's pretty cool! I've heard a lot of people wanting something like that now. They would love to have Kislev, DoW, Estalia, Ind, Nippon, Hobgoblins, etc all detailed. Personally, I think that would be a cool idea, too.
Kera, I started my chaos dwarf army, with that very same Rick Priestly list. LOL… Fantasy has changed so much since then… Of course most of you all were still playing at the playground in elementary school back then too.

I think you've got that Warhammer Armies book with the allies list confused as for editions. Back in the early days of 3rd ed the very first army book was published - "Ravening Hordes" (some things never change) - it had the stats and army compositions for most of the armies we know today. Back then there were two ways to get forces from other armies into your list - Allies (which were listed in the army list and had a limited selection of available troops), and Mercenaries.
Third ed. army composition is tough to describe - you had have a certain number of models of certain troops types in your army, and there were caps on the number of troops (as a hypothetical example, you might have had to include 20-60 Bondi in a Norse army, in units of at least ten). Figuring out points cost was a pain in the tonsils as lots of troops could add armour or weapons options for 1/4 or 1/2 a point, so you could end up with troops that cost 4.75 points each, and you could have certain troops where only half a unt could have armour. Standards and musicians would set you back double the value of a basic trooper in that regiment. Gahhhh!
There was no such thing as a CD army in 3rd ed. CDs were an available troop type in a Chaos Army, but with the army comp rules, they would not be the only type of troops in your army.

Was nobody able to point out that totals to 125%?:)
Though, 50% for characters isn't all that uncommon. When a single, unarmed or armored, character can cost as much as an entire core unit, larger games are more likely to see about that amount. I used to despair when playing in escalation leagues and find that the next tier (+250pts) would get me one lord character or a mediocre hero and a couple extra boys in a unit.
I actually wish they'd go back to the allies in armies approach. Could be quite characterful and interesting.

Hey, I had already quit playing at that point! A friend had gotten the 3rd Ed rulebook and we all played a few games and in a grand campaign. I played with the paper counters with Orcs and Goblins, but moved on to Dark Elves when he actually bought minis (that army boxed set that had them all). I remember having a unit of lvl 5 heroes as cavalry. They were pretty nasty, if not expensive.
Anyways, when it came time to buy new units, no one had the money! We were all spending our meager coins on drink.

What should I say ... I also begun to play Warhammer and to buy my first dwarfs and chaos dwarfs at that time! lol

Not me! I was out driving my 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, going to the bars, hanging out with friends and getting girls! Little gamming figures were the last thing on my mind! Ahhh....to be 19 again! :D

I had a unit of Goblin heroes at one point. At 40 pts each they weren't exactly cheap, but they dished out several high strength attacks each and could absorb massive amounts of wounds. If they didn't flee before combat...
Quite old school absolutely, some of the peoples i gamed with did take allies, mercs and such… i was more of a purest didnt like to muddy my army with such things.
DoW does seem like it took over that position, but it was absent for a little while, prior too that there were some WD’s which began to cover allies and which armies could fight for whom and the like. There was a lot of character back in those days… and even though composition calculations could be 'uge pain it seemed almost easier to “beardie” up a hero and potentially the army.
When i started playing all i had was the newly released Slaves to Darkness book. Oh what fun that was, especially when i convinced them to do the warband fun. Collecting and attempting to mod and band as it grew and mutated. Bygone days of hordes of fun.
