[Archive] Dînadan's blog (updated 21/12/15)

Dînadan:

Yep, I definitely recommend giving RoR a go if you’ve got a group of people willing o give it a shot.

I’m looking forward to the next time we play and getting to use my M5 leader running arround all over the place out pacing everyone lol

Dînadan:

Just a little update to show I’m still alive. This arrived in the post today:

Once I’ve finished my entry for the Artisan’s Contest I’m planning on armouring him up and giving him weapons to use as a siege giant.

Dînadan
Glad to see you've survived the End Times ;)
That's a nice model...it looks familiar, think I've seen it somewhere before, where is it from?

Dînadan:

It’s an OoP large scale Mantic Ghoul. Mantic used to do giant versions of their Ghoul, Zombie and Skeleton figures (although only one design from each iirc) as collector’s pieces. Not including the base it’s just shy of 3" tall (and if it wasn’t crouched it’d be about 4 1/4" tall)

Dînadan:

Well I’m definitely not going to make it for the Artisan’s Contest so I’m sure it’s safe to start posting WiP shots of what I was going to enter. My plan is for a two tier ziggurat with a fully modeled interior so it can be used in skirmish games (eg Mordheim).

First up, a load of plasticard cut to size:

There are two sheets which will form the base, one for the ground floor (which will be elevated), one for the ceiling of the ground floor/floor of the first floor and one for the ceiling of the first floor/floor of the second floor. There are also two strips for each wall.

Outer walls for the first floor structure:

I’ve used the old LotR:SBG ruins as the basis of the stonework and for the doorway.

Interior walls added:

Remember I said each wall had two plasticard strips? Well this is why. A single sheet would be two thin, so I’ve used two strips with scale bricks as spacers to make them thicker.

Git off mah lawn!:

Just a dry run showing the floor of the next level/roof of this one with a blunderbuss dwarf for scale.

Skylight:

One of the parts from the above roof. Drilling out the gaps in the grate so it’ll be a skylight. Probably worth mentioning that the structure it’s in the ceiling of is planned to be the barracks.

Crenellations:

Just toying around with crenellations using scale bricks. Probably going to have to rethink this as the bricks might be too fragile like this.

Brickwork:

Been using milliput to do the brickwork on the walls. First time I’ve ever used it…I hate working with milliput now

Interior detailing:

On the ground floor I’ll be using the pillars from the old Mines of Moria set to help support the floor above along with the well from the same set. Not pictured is a floor hatch for access to the subterrainian levels I plan on adding eventually along with a barred floor hatch to access the slave pen in said lower level. My plan is to build a stairway against the rear interior wall to allow access to the first floor, and beneath the stairway will be an archway in which will be a privy. As said above, the first floor structure will be the barracks and the plan is to have bunks inside and a ladder to access the topmost floor.

Other plans:

As said, the fort will be elevated. This is because I plan on having a shallow dry moat/ditch around it and plan on having a small bridge spanning it fron the doors.

That’s all so far - will keep up guys updated as things progress…this may take a while…

Abecedar:

Good luck with your Ziggurat’s construction.

I began a similar project last year, with very similar ideas / plans. It will mainly be out of MDF but it is sadly stalled for now

DAGabriel:

Sweet, but I can see why you couldn`t make it happen for this AC!

Bloodbeard:

That’s pretty grand! Gonna be great when eventually finished. I have a lot of stuff cut out as well, but have focussed on a small part in order to finish something in time.

Dînadan:

Thanks guys. I think I might have been able to make it, but various things conspired to get in the way - my health preventing me from working on it some days and the milliput being so horrible to work with that I’m only able to do small bits with it at a time. If it hadn’t been for those things, then it probably would have been able to do most of it - could have left painting the interiors and doing various inside touches until after the contest along with the base and moat. I’m slowly continuing with the milliput but most of one pack has gone on just the exteriors of the upper structure, and even then I have yet to do the detailing (planning on doing that with procreate) and will have gaps to fill when the four walls are put together, so coupled with how horrible it is to work with I’m going to have to look into other stuff I can use to make the brickwork. Might be easier to carve it into the plasticard than use another putty or use plaster.

Dînadan:

A touch off topic, but worth noting, just managed to win a bunch of auctions on some army books - Tomb Kings, Ogres, Daemons and WoC; price averages out to just over £12 a book :D. That being said - a pox on the house of the dastard who made the TK book double in price in the last 30secs of the auction; was sitting pretty at £6.50 all day and then in the last few seconds before my eye it jumped to 11 quid then £12.40 on the very last second!

Bloodbeard:

Hi Dinadan. Is it okay if I upload your castle WIPs to GSW?

Dînadan:

Fine by me - which ones in particular were you thinking of?

Doombeard:

I’ve been seeing some army books go for around 6quid they were WoC ones, 3 by the same seller. I think people are clearing out their stock, good time to pick up stuff before they all go OOP and sold by sellers for rip off prices

Why do you think I snapped up TK, OK, DoC and WoC when I did ;). If I'd had the money I'd probably have bid on the other books the guy was selling (Vamps, Lizzies and all three elf books iirc. He also had O&G for sale, but I already have that one ;)).

Doombeard:

Yeah its a good idea, I might try and grab a demons and warriors one so I can set about making a combined legion. Loads of armies being sold off on there too at the moment

All your castle project pictures. Will also grab your text. GSW donated some mighty fine prizes for this competition and would love to see some cretive projects uploaded in return.

I would like to honour that, get some mighty fine prizes for future competitions as well perhaps.

EDIT: I've uploaded the project to GSW and included a link to your blog as well. Your castle!

Bwahahaha! Oh, I love it! I laughed and laughed!
Reminds me of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino :)
Sending you some slaves for the wit and humor of it all.
And Dinadan, you should of entered anyways, even if not complete. I would of given you a vote based on what you shared...great idea's and some very clever use/design of bits and sculpting. Well done good sir :cheers

Thanks Fuggit :hat off. I did try to get as much done as I could (after I realised how long it was taking tried to get the upper structure finished and leave the ground floor for after the comp, but that started to drag and working with the milliput really started to sap my energy so I couldn't manage to get it even to a presentable level.

Greatest shame was that I was hoping that if I had managed to get everything done, then the interior details such as the privy would have scored me some votes :(

Dînadan:

These just arrived today:

Now to wait for the Tomb King book to arrive and I can start thinking of undead Chaos Dwarf units to make. Might have to pick up the Vamps book at some point so I can have zombie slaves aswell.

Of course I need to get the regular army finished first really, lol
