[Archive] do we actually want an official armybook?

Fequiil:

ofcourse, we all want the new armybook, but what about this, CDO? what will be left of it?

i mean, if we take a look at this site then you’ll see:

- incredible sculptors

- incredible fan mae armylists

- great people

- and alot of CDs ofcourse

but when we’ll get our own minis, the this incredible site will partly turn into a “normal” warhammer site, wouldn’t it?

you know what i mean, right?

Fequiil

Verezzo:

Well possibly, however I think people will keep converting their own mini’s (and those that don’t will still have their already converted units and heroes). Most people use RH so the fan lists isn’t to big however, I would only use the GW book for tournaments unless it was really good - if not I would continue using my own book/the Indy GT Book (at our school tournaments - I ‘forced’ the teacher that organises them to let me use the Indy list in our tournaments). And as for the last 2 points, the great people will still be here and of course, new official mini’s just means more Dawi Zharr on our gaming tables ;)!

Therefore, while I think you are slightly correct on the first points, it would still be a great CD site with great people, great mini’s, great conversions (we’re hardly going to be given a model for every thing!) and the fan lists - I know I’ll still be using them ;)!

Joshmohr:

Yes, some will always convert there own miniatures. If we get our army book, and official miniatures, our conversions could be played as elite units. And when people ask us where we got them (More than half the army’s here are sell-able quality!) we can say that we made them before the army was available.

ryanamandaanna:

A good example is Skaven. While they’ve always had a legit list, the people who run them often make bizarre and interesting conversions and then either make their own rules or us “counts as”.

I think a legit list would help us in regards to finding opponents who won’t whine if we beat them with an “unofficial list”.

Fequiil:

ofcourse, this site would still be great, and, essentially you re right ofcourse…

but it wouldn’t be the same.

Grimstonefire:

It wouldn’t be the same, but only for people who have a limited imagination.

The way GW makes things doesn’t stop any of us making whatever we want. Sure it may get some strange comments from people (say for instance you painted your orcs pink), but if I want something made a certain way, models from FW will not stop me doing it.

So really there may not be too much to lose if we do get a new book, but a lot to gain.

ClawLeader:

I would love an officially support range of models and book again, and it wouldn’t stop me from doing the conversions. Its all apart of the fun, and it makes the army unique. As for the forum, it really depends on the members and how they use it and react to the inception of a new book.

Spikes:

I would like a new book with 8th in mind, because it’s hard to play a fringe army (out here in Montreal) in events.

In friendly games, it’s ok though.

CD are my favourite models specifically because they didn’t have a current 2009-2010 miniatures range.

wallacer:

A new book and new figures would only serve to get more people interested in CD, which can only be a good thing.

Official GW product doesn’t prevent conversions and so forth.

Da Crusha:

well before 8th I really wanted a new armybook, but now I feel like we got a nice boost and Im not too concerned about it. some new models would be cool but I already have everything I need.

Valrim:

Just have one point to make here…

Can anyone else name a 2point per model unit that can best hobgoblins? Anyone?

I mean… zombies are 4 points! 4points for a useless zombie…

We have it good. We can use the new lore spells. We can use the new magic items. Our costs are not that expensive…

I plan on rolling with at least 4 squads of 80 hobgoblins at 2k points. I mean… come on… that is only 160 points for a unit that will wreck other units, tar pit them, or terrify your opponent when they realize that our 320 hobgoblins cost less than their hammer unit.

New codex? New rules?

No thanks!

I’m happy with our pdf.

:cheers

GRNDL:

Yes, I do want an official rulebook. While it might take the wind out of the enthusiasm sales for a few people, I think the hardcore CD collectors will still do their conversions, track down the old models and still do fan lists for them.

An official book will also provide a much needed corner stone to build new material from as well. GW fluff has tons of hooks to build fan projects onto, so I think we’ll see an influx of new fan stuff following new trends. An official fluff cornerstone will also give us an identity we can support, regardless of our Hat/Helm/Mask creeds - lets face it, no matter what the official word is, we’ll still put forward out own favourites, but at the same time, we will be able to see what an “official” modern CD is.

And of course, we’d get some official models as well - more conversion opportunities, and potentially, more frequent updates to that model range as well. (more frequent that we currently have!) IMO, there’s not many armies out there that supporting fans like every new model for, and plan to keep using old models (see that Chaos Horror thread for eg), or convert the hell out of the new ones, so we’d be no different in that regard.

In summary, we get all the advantages of our current state, IMO, and a few new ones. All we have to do is keep our faith and enthusiasm in the Dawi Zharr.

I think the only people who will suffer are the trendy hipsters who want an army that is rebellious, or rare, in order to preserve their mystique… (and in future, that possibly also means Hat supporters, like myself :stuck_out_tongue: )

cornixt:

To be blunt, GW’s effort will not please everybody, and possibly nobody (at least of those already a member of the forum). Anything they come up with will not be enough for a good portion of people, and the fan art/conversions/new units/etc will continue to pour in just like they always have. The only difference is that there will be a load of new people who have joined the forum and will do all they can to infuriate the “old guard” with their newbie-ness.

I stand by my position from last year that it will be a while before a full book, and we’ll be seeing a few DoW style war machines and maybe even an infantry unit long before then. But an official book would be nice to stop the weird stares and the “they aren’t legal” comments.

Baggronor:

In a way, I don’t want a new book, as I feel part of the reason CDO is so good is because of the huge numbers of creative players that CDs attract due to their unofficial status. However, this can’t last forever, and sooner or later we will likely get a new book, in whatever form. When that time comes, I would hope that CDO survives it; the rules won’t please everyone (though I doubt GW’s take on things is even an issue for many here ;)) the figures will probably enrage at least 65% of the forum  and the influx of, how shall I put it, less interesting players will be a big turn-off for me at least, more because of their attitudes than anything else.

Willmark:

I think that new figures would enrage only 64% of the folks here…

to bad this can't last forever...
but that is indeed the way i feel. we have a sort of love/hate relation with an update, don't we?

Unzul:

i don’t want an official army book… i love the chaos dwarf because there aren’t many people that use them… because you must create your army whit a lot of conversion…

nitroglysarine:

i love the variation in the designs as it is.

Necessity breads creation.

If there was an official GW range, it’d be overpriced, half as pretty as most of the stuff on here, and this forum would be stagnant of new designs

Naaa, i like what we have.

Spikes:

If there was an official CD range, I could use them in tournaments.

In Montreal we have no access to CD except in friendly games. They’re just as “outlawed” as Dogs of War and Gnoblar Hordes.

Fair point, but i've not had a game since 2003 so, i have a bit of bias.
i'm a converter / painter not a gamer (not for the want of it)
