[Archive] Finds on eBay and Strategies for defeating Extortionist Pricing

if you weren't prepared to bid the extra 5 pounds five minutes ago, why are you so keen to do it now?

It's just the psychology of some people on eBay.
For example, it someone (person A) bids (for the sake of argument) $100 on a figure as their maximum bid someone else (person B ) may come along and keep bidding on it until the adrenaline wears off and they decide to give up (say at $50).

If person A had not stuck in their maximum bid at $100 person B may have bid up to (for example) $30 which was enough to lead the auction and which they thought was an amount likely to deter any other bidders.5 minutes before the end of the auction person A comes back and over bids person B with $31, wins the auction and saves himself about 20 bucks.

That is a very simple example, but hopefully it shows that people don't always bid rationally on eBay.If you stuck in a maximum bid like eBay wants you to then people can keep pushing your bid up with their own bidding, which can end up being significantly more expensive than last minute overbidding.

Willmark:

Sniping is an effective and time honored tool on eBay, once I figured that out I rarely if ever lost an auction. Sniping is not fool proof. It only helps that others cannot make a counter bid because time has run out. If the maximum bid someone else is willing to bid is higher then the snipe bid… it doesn’t work, which has also happened to me as well.

torn:

thats why i always put a maximum bid in of 2 more minimum increments not long before an auction end, that way if someone does try sniping they still lose.

to be honest the easiest way to be successful at auctions is to be willing to spend more money than the other people. a lot of people cant afford to buy something for what its worth, which is why they pick ebay in the first place. I admit i get a lot of barains, like a goblin regiment sealed in box for 4 not so long ago, but for new items im willing to pay just under GW retail price, as its still cheaper.

Off-topic somewhat, but it’s looking increasingly like I’ve been stung in a recent transaction. I saw a Hellcannon for a “Buy it Now” price of 20 and snapped it up. That was three weeks ago, and still no sign. The seller’s sent two messages, the first blaming personal circumstances for a delay in posting and a second saying it was sent last week.

Always annoying.

Willmark:

Hold off with your feedback UNTIL you get it. Also it lets him correct the problem. Also do not worry about neg feedback as a buyers sellers have much more to lose on a negative feedback, so much so they will try to pressure you in feedback withdrawn situations.

wallacer:

There is a statute of limitations on feedback.

If it is too long after the auction ended eBay won’t let you enter feedback.

Doombeard:

OK THANKS

This_Is_My_Boomstick!!:

with about an hour and a half to go it looks like this private user id person is winning nearly all the chaos dwarf auctions

Pyro Stick:

I thought sellers could choose to keep the ID’s of people bidding on their items secret?

Willmark:

I might be wrong but I Believe that both can.

Canix:

The sellers choose to make the bidding private ,buyers can have a private id but you see who they are when there bidding it just means there personal details are private:hat off

There are alot of reasonable lots on ebay.com at the moment inc large CD army for 50

Doombeard:

biklinictoo ia the only one who keeps his id private because his feedback is bad

biklinictoo runs the warhammer-crazy store selling cds at rip off pricess - he is essexgirls main competitor

Yep I'll be bidding on that one; been watching it for 5 days.... Good news is that I will be selling some of it here should I win. I only need parts of it.

Willmark:

UPDATE: I’m still tracking the large lot out there. Its up to $153.50 US as of right now. Wish me luck because should I win it a large chunk of the army will be offered here first at competive prices.

Pyro Stick:

Could you post the link to this army please

Willmark:

sorry can’t do links from the iPhone at least not yet. Do a search in eBay its ending in 4-5 hours. Word of caution, I will be bidding quite a bit.

Willmark:

Ah the joys of eBay. lost out in the end, my maximum bid 255.99 sold for 254.56. At that price the bidding needed to be in 1.50 increments. So how much did I lose by boys and girls… 7 cents… Couldn’t get the $260.00 bit in fast enough. Oh well, win some, lose some I guess.

Canix:

I always wonder if biklinictoo was the guy from warhammer crazy he snipe bids me a fair bit ,this weekend a ES for 12.50 and sorc lord and hero 10.5,as these are the price i am prepared to pay i dont mindhave plenty to paint and like to win at my prices.:hat

Unlucky with that lot Willmark looked tasty those US shipping only lots never go as high as worldwide and i have met sellers who wont send abroard cause of US postal probs.

Something makes me think that all 3 of these ebayers are in fact one and the same person.

I am pretty sure biklinictoo=essexgirl=warhammer-crazy.

This is due to a mate who sold to biklinictoo some CD stuff and he is almost sure Essexgirl put the exact items for sale at a huge markup a week after purchase.

Also the items both ebay shops have for sale appear very similar with price differences. I may be wrong but then this is the murky world of online auctions.
