[Archive] Going to London

Lord Archaon:

Hi everybody. :hat off

I’m going on a trip to London at the end of June (28-30). It would be cool to meet someone from CDO there. It’s my first flight to UK, so if someone could suggest some sightseeings in London, i’d be very grateful.

Kered:

I don’t live in London but I recommend going to the natural history museum at some point ,the building alone is worth a look. Or if you like galleries there are the Tate Britain and Tate modern although they don’t really count are sight seeing.

There are also the more typical thing to go and look at like the houses of parliament, tower bridge, the London eye and St Pauls cathedral to name a few.

Hobgoblinbt:

The British Museum is great for antiquities, eg the Elgin Marbles or gates from ancient assyrian cities as well as the Sutton Hoo treasures (inspiration for CD masks?)

The Museum of London is excellent and is situated near St Pauls Cathedral.

The Imperial war Museum for 20th century warfare

The National Army Museum at Chelsea, next door to The Royal Hospital, good for pre 20th century British Army

All the above are free.

Google for Hobgoblin pubs. There are at least 3 in London. They feature Wytchwood Brewery beers including a great Ruby Ale, called Hobgoblin

Lord Archaon:

Thanks! I guess I’ll have to make a map for myself and point every place worth visiting.

Skink:

Hey don’t 4get to loose yourself in Picadilly, Trafalgar & the Thames banks! Give a go to the London Tower, the Parliament (& Big Ben), the Tower bridge and Westminster abbey! All this locations can be reached by tube, get an Oyster card and buy a travel card (1 week was 25quid when I was living in the UK). If you want to get some fun, well, there are lots of nice places in London! Camden Town, Brick Lane, Elephant & Castle, Shoredicht, Oxford Circus or the Fabrique near King’s Cross are all good places! Have fun!

snowblizz:

For sightseeing I’d suggest going for one of those double-decker tours. They have them pretty much everywhere I’ve found.

They can be rather expensive, do take some time, are horribly touristy but I find them to be a very nice way of getting to see the main places.

I’ve done them in Glasgow, San Francisco, London (I’m fairly sure) and sort of in Lima.

Sometimes they are a great way to actually get to the places you want to see as well. If they run a hop-on/off regime.

I was a bit disappointed by the British Museum really, it was fun seeing all that stuff you always see in history books but I felt it was a bit thin. Now I was dragged along sort of with my parents, and 2 couples which are old friends of my parents as we were all there celebrating my dad’s 50th birthday so freedom to roam as one would please was severely curtailed.

Thommy H:

The British Museum is great, but it’s massive, and you can’t really appreciate it all in one day. We bailed before we got to Ancient China, because eventually your brain just turns to mush. It’s really worth going to though. And the Natural History Museum, which is just an amazing and wholly excellent institution. And all the museums are free, of course. There is literally no reason not to go.

Lord Archaon:

Wow, museums are free? That’s great news. I remeber visiting Sweden about a year ago and spending 50 pounds only on museum tickets, so i was expecting something similar in the UK. Anyone knows, is photographing allowed in The British Museum? It would be cool if it is, i could take some reference photos of ancient babylon, for my CD.

BtW what with Gaming Clubs, are there any worth visiting?

Thommy H:

Yeah, I think photography is fine in the British Museum - some places there are signs that say you can’t though.

Reminds me a bit of when I was at the Louvre with my parents, I was around 12 I think. We were supposed to have "directions" to the interesting stuff but with my parents in the lead we ended up in endless rooms of French 17-19th century art. At some point we managed to get down to the "start" and found there were actually signs leading the way to the "important" stuff.

I'm suspecting similar issues were at play at the British Museum. I remember Egyptian mummies (smelled really weird in that exhibit), the Rosetta stone and I think those pieces of Greek temple they'd like back but apart from that not so much. We *were* dragging along the world's most culturally hostile artist, a college buddy of my mum's, so the fact I came away from the British Museum feeling somewhat underwhelmed might be easily explained. The less said about the whole going to a musical fiasco the better. Didn't mean to derail the thread but painful memories surfaced.:~ I recommend buying tickets through your travel agent and not trying to get them on the spot from a scalper or whatnot.

Lord Archaon
50 pounds?! What museum was that? the museums i've been to here cost around 7 pounds (where cheaper before I think, but nowdays culture dont get much money, you literally have to be a businessman if your a artist :mad)

Borador:

Abbey Road?

This message was automatically appended because it was too short.

cornixt:

The bus tours are pretty good to do on your first day. I did one even though I’d been to pretty much everything in London before and it was still useful. You get you bearings and loads of great photos of most of the gpod places without the stress of finding the right trains/buses, then you can go back to those that you want, like the tower of London.

I've been on Gotland and visited several museums. 1 ticket was about 12-14 pounds if i remember correctly. :)

Hashut’s Blessing:

I would say don’t bother with the eye. It’s expensive, lengthy and pointless. A double decker tour is a good way of seeing the same stuff and you can hop on and off and use it as overground transport. I’d say go to the Tower of London, but it will take all day. Go to Leicester Square underground station and you can get cheaper tickets for a West End show if that’s your thing (they sell the empty seats for that day at lower prices to try and prevent having empty seats). Covent Garden is always a great place to go (and has a GW if you want it). Good idea to go to Monument (near Tower Hill and Tower of London and Tower Bridge) and then on to Trafalgar Square (Tate is right there and you can see “Big Ben” from there just about).

Too many things to say them all, lol. The river tour is quite interesting too. Also, go to the Globe Theatre - £5 to see a Shakespeare play in one of the most famous theatres on the planet? Yes please

London… ahh good old memories

Well London is plenty of interesting proposals for every taste! It’s just a matter of what you like the most.

The British Museum is a must, the Parthenon sculptures are breathless, one of the greates masterpieces of mankind. Really well worth the trip to London. Just next to them there are the Babylonian sculptures, well worth for Hashut lovers  (even tough Berlin is the place to go for Babylonian stuff in Europe).

If you are modern art lover my favourite is the Tate Modern. One of the coolest modern art museum in the world and theri temporary exhibits are way too cool to be missed.

If you like Renaissance, well, the National Gallery is another must, Leonardo da Vinci, Italian masters… well it’s pretty difficult to get more but in Italy… of course! :-)))

I always found the Tower way too expensive for my taste and you can find much more interesting medieval fortresses in other part of the world. IMO.

We play Warhammer, even if not militaristic we love big guns and machines of destruction, so the Imperial War Museum is great. I really enjoyed the visit. And where else in the world you can find Nazi-tanks blow up by British steel?

If you have time have a nice walk to the Docks, it’s a nice area if you like to see some cool XIX century industrial architecture (Cool for steampunk Chaos Dwarfs lovers  ).

Camden town is also a must to see the first time you get to London. Dunno about shopping but the area is unique. From Camden town you can also start a nice walk along canals. If you do not bother to walk for 2-3 hours it’s really a nice walk. You will be in the middle of the city and surrounded by old building, parks, you will see the back of old houses and if you are lucky hot chick sunbathing on the boats sailing the canals

My fav pubs in London: Thy Olde Mitre in Holborn, the oldest pub in town! Try there a real “real ale” and eat some “real” pub food. It’s a pleasure of life.

The second fav pub is The Olde Cheeshire Cheese (or something similar…) in the heart of the city. If you get there during lunch time you will see the “classic” white collars having a good beer. Try some pints with a good pie.

Well have a nice weekend in London

Hashut’s Blessing:

Forgot, if you want to see the financial capital of the capital, Canary Wharf is the place to go, but not much to do or see. Also, don’t bother with the )2 arena - out oft he way, an eyesore and boring as all Hell.

Lord Archaon
Gotland can be a tourist trap if you go to the wrong places ;P

Lord Archaon:

Thanks for advice everyone! :cheers I’ll try to visit as many places as i can.

Baggronor:

buy a travel card (1 week was 25quid when I was living in the UK)
I'm guessing that was a while ago ;)

I'd stay away from the bus tours, they look awful. Just go for a wander in central, a lot of the good stuff like museums and galleries are all within walking distance of each other, and of decent pubs.
