Baggronor:

I’m going to have you join you in non-Dwarf humanoid sculpting soon  I’m dreading elves…

Grimstonefire:

You should try sculpting a 28mm scale skeleton. That’s harder than doing a horse imo!

Baggronor:

Well, my to-sculpt list reads: skinny goblins, elves, undead… Oh dear…

Snotling:

I do wish you guys would live in my neighborhood so we could meet and have sculpting partys where I steal all your ideas and learn your skills… well, I have my own ideas, but it would be great to see some really good sculpters working :hat off

Bassman:

I’d like to have more time to really learn how to sculpt :frowning:

I’ve never scratch build an entire miniature…

We could open a CDO sculpting academy

zobo1942:

I’d love to see a ‘how to’, showing the techniques used, from initial character design and armature creation, right up to completed model. That would be really informative and help a lot of people learn to express themselves better!

If you (or anyone else!) could create a tutorial like that, I bet a lot of people would really appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

Grimstonefire:

I will have a go at this, early next year.

I have four main weaknesses as a sculptor I think; sculpting ‘floating’ details (those stuck out on a bit of wire for an armature), flowing hair/tails, making dynamic models, but my main weakness is actually doing original designs for things.

It seems I’m good at thinking up a concept (like the 4 armed bonebreaker who was going to have warp lightning claws), good at sculpting a design, but poor at actually designing the model in the first place.

Really? I always thought your stuff looked very cool. Your CD BSB is the mutt's nuts. So to speak.
so we could meet and have sculpting partys
Lol that'd be cool :cheers

I might have a go at that too. Might make me re-evaluate how and why I do things.

Grimstonefire:

Some WIP shots of the Emperor of Man.  I realised it would be a huge amount of work, but I hadn’t anticpated it being layers of tiny details upon layers of tiny details…  Most of the detail sculpting I’m having to do with my craft knife, as it’s a razor sharp blade with a sharp tip.  Not to mention carving small blades out of plasticard that have to then be cut to have 4 angular sides.  Those are proving very hard.

He’s going to go on a 40mm round base eventually.

I’m having real problems trying to take pics of this guy.  The detail is so small it’s blurring a lot, and the lighting is rubbish for the time of year. :~

I’ve included a life size shot so you can appreciate the detail more.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Skink:

Mh… He looks good, but IMO you’re trying to stuck too many little details on a too small surface!!! The kind of work you’re doing is more suited for the Inquisitor scale!!! You are a talented sculptor, I really like your job, but this one that you’re showing gives me the idea to be an hell tantrum of a mini when is going to be finished!!! If you know what I mean… This said, I’m rubbish at sculpting, and maybe I’m the last person that has to speak…

Grimstonefire:

You are right, I could have used a bigger base model or scratch sculpted it bigger.  I figured that if I could sculpt it smaller, I should, as not only is it a better test of my skills but it saves a lot of GS and money (as I already had a base model).  Depending on how it comes out I may consider doing a large scale version for games day and sell this one, if I can be bothered to paint all that gold. :~

Hopefully it will get some 10’s on CMON when he’s done. All the models there are bigger afaik, and mine has more detail.

nitroglysarine:

He looks awesome.

for a sec i thought he was going to be a WFB model.

Da Crusha:

the emperor looks Great! I don’t think you have done too many details though, looks just right IMO. Love the face and head, they look really good!

Unzul:

wow, great stuff… i love very much the inferno golem, it reminds me the robot in hellboy-the golden army…

great work!!!

Grimstonefire:

That was part of my inspiration actually. Although trying to find a decent picture of them from the movie was almost impossible.

Unzul:

yeah… it’s very difficult…

nitroglysarine:

…had a look myself, could only find porn and the toy models of the gold soldiers.

Baggronor:

.had a look myself, could only find porn and the toy models of the gold soldiers.
The fact that a search for mechanical golden soldiers returns porn says a lot about the internet really.

An my internet settings are turned to no filter might also answer that ;p

Grimstonefire:

Small update here.

I’ve painted a few more clanrats (up to 28 now), another stormvermin and a plague monk.  Painted my doomflayer and converted a clanrat to have the dwarf pony legs.  I’ll take some pics of these later in the month, because I’m really trying hard to end 2010 over my pledge (see sig).  Getting close, but a fair few left to do.

Something that has been keeping me away from painting is a massive Deathwheel thing I’ve been making.  It will be about 10cm wide, 17cm long (at base level anyway) and about 20cm tall.  I’m trying to make it in such a way as to have as few molds as possible.  So I’m about half way through a quarter circle (10cm across, 4cm wide) that will be cast 8 times to make the 2 wheels.  I’ve planned how I will do this, it will be a 3 part mold.

I also need to make a 1/4 inner circle mold to mount the engine block and crew somehow, and some killy blades around the base.  It’s going to have 2 ‘Warp Flux cannons’ mounted on the sides near the front.

Depending on how it goes I may try and sell a few, but it’s going to be expensive to make.

My original idea was to make it in such a way that 2 doomwheels could be side wheels, I had already figured out how it could be done.  But I had not antipated making it quite so wide, so it probably wouldn’t work.  It would be about a 20(wide) x18 base, which would look awesome, but be a bit much for just a display piece…
