[Archive] How did you get ensnared into GW's games?

Khan!:

Man, I wanna be an old guy too! Does 1993 count? I was playing Heroquest with my brother and my dad before that, and I remember my brother going to a local comic convention and playing Epic Space Marine. Yeah! We bought a bunch of Epic stuff and made games up out of it on our driveway, drawing the terrain in with chalk! Hmm and I think I played a game of Man O’ War at the local indie retailer, and then we bought the first boxed version of 40k shortly afterwards (with the two piece space marines and orks, and the cardboard ork dreadnought)…followed by the Warhammer boxset with elves and goblins (with cardboard Eltharion and Grom the Pauch!)…followed by Man O’ War…followed by Necromunda when it first came out (it was a Christmas present, and now Necromunda always makes me think of Christmas! awww…) and so on and on until the present. I remember always wanting the plastic “Terminators vs Tyranids” boxset of the Tyranid Attack/Space Hulk models, and being really disappointed when it was discontinued and I hadn’t bought it. Dang…

Bill-117:

Yeah. They should have brought that back instead of ME.

X-Porter:

Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd edition, around 1987-88.

I picked up the hardcover rulebook at my local comic store, and despite the lame cover art of some Conan wannabe smacking a two-headed goblin with a…well with a warhammer oddly enough… the photos inside hooked me. It had the visual appeal that D&D was lacking.

Then one of my friends showed me the issue of White Dwarf that previewed some game called “Rogue Trader” or something…

Willmark:

same here X porter the art… meh, the rules kick ass!

wallacer:

I got into it 20 or so years ago back in 3rd edition Warhammer.

From memory I think it was just a natural progression from roleplaying.

X-Porter:

Does anyone else remember the Warhammer Regiments box set? You got 10 each of Orcs, Goblin archers, Dwarfs, Wood Elf archers, Skaven, and Dark Elf Crossbows. Sure, they weren’t great plastics, but still a good deal to split with a friend or two when you’re getting started.

No more deals like that from GW. No more 2 Land Raiders or 3 Rhinos to a box. Or 30-odd beaky Marines…

sigh

Yup, that's how I started my Skaven army.

AGPO:

I think it was around 1995 for me. A friend introduced me via White Dwarf.

Grimstonefire
Can't quite imagine that happening now

wallacer:

White Dwarves still have nice pictures in them, so it’s not impossible, I guess.

Yep my friends and I bought TONS of those sets. We each picked a army and that is how we started with our very first army.

My first experiences with wargaming was with some Civil war miniature games, Forget the names. I first started with fantasy games with D&D in 1982. I was 9 and got the D&D basic set for Christmas.

Pyro Stick:

OMG I JUST REMEMBERED!!! This guy brought a white dwarf into school and some LOTR minitures. I decided to look through the magazine cause i was bored and the models looked quite cool. I was into the film of LOTR at the time so that was probably what i was looking at. I went home and tried to look up the site for warhammer but found Forge World instead so i looked through there. So it was really Forge World that got me into warhammer. It was only a while later that someone told me GW had their own website.

Willmark:

That’s pretty cool. LoTR is a great gateway due to the movies, just not sure how valid now that the movies are no longer in the teather. Forgeworld intergratin with GW is one of their hetter ideas and one quite frankly I’m suprised they haven’t screwed up yet.

Pyro Stick:

I just wish Forge World were cheaper. I really want the deamonhunter Grey Knight and the deamonhunter doors for the rhino. But they are too expensive.

Me and some friends of mine tried to make up our own rules at Intermediate School, but that was not overly successful (you thought Warhammer was poorly written  )

Willmark:

I think everyone goes through that. Can’t tell you how many times my friends and I said “We can do better then that”! Sadly we were also mistaken.

Now that I’m older Ive actually written my own RPG, the problem lies in module creation, just don’t have the time for it.

Kera foehunter:

i played d&d a while before warhammer .its not wargamming thow.

cornixt:

I played heroquest a lot and was vaguely familiar with GW, then saw the 4th ed box set in the Argos catalogue and knew I had to have it. Snowballed from there.
