[Archive] Is this worth a thread? Only you can judge that, my friends

Thommy H:

You’re quite right, it is on there. I had to look over it quite a bit to find it. It ought to be alphabetical or something.

Bolg:

But vomit brown is not on the list… And I really don’t feel like rebasing -again- dam you GW…

It is, it's now called Tau Light Ochre.

cornixt:

I was at my local GW today for the paint expo thing they were holding today. I say “at” but really I mean outside, since they don’t open until 2pm and I was there at 1.30. A few minutes after I arrived my daughter split her chin open at the roller rink and I was at the clinic for the next few hours - no time to go back. Whose weird idea was it to stay closed well into the afternoon on a weekend?

Hashut’s Blessing:

The reason that two old colours are listed as one new colour is because they are referring to the closest equivalent, not the new name. The real reason isn’t copywrite (not the main one anyway) - it’s because the formula is different and the colours are not exactly the same: using the same names would generate confusion (why is my Camo Green a different shade to my last Camo Green, for example).

Regarding Dark Angels Green and Orkhide Shade, the foundation was matte and the colour was slightly gloss.

Regarding paint types: Foundation is Base, Colours (Normals) are Layers, Washes are Shades and the rest are new types. Glaze is, from what I gather, for strengthening colour, without shading it. Tehcnical is Medium (like the masterclass paint set), 'Ardcoat, Liquid Green Stuff and Primer (the undercoat black only available in paint sets, previously). Textured uses microbeads to allows you to create forms and shapes on bases (or models if need be - useful for Nurglites as you then just drybrush over Lustrian Undergrowth). Dry is for drybrushing - no more wasting paint on kitchen roll, just wipe on the lid (to keep the excess paint) and brush away!

Going back to colour comparisons: summary is that the paints aren’t the same. White Dwarf will have a copy on the back it’s on the website and most stores have it printed too.

If you’re really desperate for your current paints, buy them now.

cheers!

Vogon:

They were also giving credit card sized painting guides out for various races with 3 or 4 step instructions for each colour which are quite interesting.

It seems to me from my very limited exposure yesterday that the whole system is designed around painting a whole army very quickly to a good looking standard but not necessarily catering to painting to golden daemon standard. This may be unfair as I was only in the store for about 5 minutes and they were pushing the speed of painting thing but I hope to go in today for a little longer and actually have a go with some of the paints.

Cheers

Hashut’s Blessing:

To be honest, the paints are designed to make painting easier for the bog standard hobbyist - ultimately, it won’t effect Golden Daemon painters because it ultimately just means they have less mixes to make, lol. You don’t HAVE to use the specialist paints, they’re just handy for those that want them and for one off pieces, the fact that exact paints don’t exist isn’t such a problem (since it won’t necessarily need to fit into an army).

I think I’m wording myself poorly. I’ll try again :stuck_out_tongue: More paints means less mixing needed. New paints makes life easier for newcomers/speedpainting. One off pieces don’t suffer (the paints don’t need to match previous ones). People have more choices for straight from pot colour. You can still mix colours and are more likely to need to mix less colours for the right effect (having more shades to choose from to begin with).

Personally, it sucks that there’s not exactly the same colours as I’ve been using, but for new projects I only see upsides to the range.

Thommy H:

Yeah, that’s what I was saying earlier in the thread, HB - if you’re someone whose painting skill is high enough for the slightly different shades to make any appreciable difference, you probably hardly ever use anything “out of the pot” as it is.

I recently restocked all my paints, as it happens, but I’m moderately excited about tackling the new range when I next run out of something.

Hashut’s Blessing:

Apparently, they are actually approached several Golden daemon winners to be their ‘beta’ testers, which is how they got the formulae and colours right.

I’d recommend grabbing as many of the paints you currently use in your army as possible - because the new paints aren’t exactly the same shades as the current ones. Also, if anyone is starting a new army, wait for the new paints, lol
