[Archive] Knock Offs from China/Hong Kong

cornixt:

i would not play anyone who had these knock offs indirectly your suporting almost slavery and childrens labour. if you need models that badly proxi

richard barby
How would you tell that they are knockoffs if they were painted? Do you also only play against christian white people?

rpitts2004
Did I miss something? There is no logical step that leads to the second question.

khedyarl:

Yeah, I’m not seeing even a minor correlation between not wanting to play against a player that has bought illegal copies of his army on ebay, and bigotry. You didn’t just set up that straw-man, you lit his ass on fire and threw him off the building.

Thommy H:

Duh, people who don’t play against recast figures are as bad as racists. At least they would be, if racists were right and some races really were objectively inferior to others. Then the bizarre analogy would make sense.

rpitts2004:

I guess I need to work on a better analogy then

Satan:

Not to make a point either way, but making the jump from China/Hongkong to child labour is way over the offensive line as well?

rpitts2004:

Yeah but he’s a kiwi and they can do no wrong.

Actually, I think it's more to do with something I said earlier in the thread when people were making a broader point about China being able to undercut the West. Which was, essentially, "yeah, you can do anything cheap when you don't have to worry about labour laws..."

The reason China is such a rising economic powerhouse is the same reason Rome, the British Empire and America were before it: a massive underclass of expendable workers that the ruling elite could freely exploit.

No one's suggesting that child labour or other forms of exploitation is somehow a feature of the Chinese national character or anything, just that that's factually one of the less palatable realities of the world's economy right now.

rpitts2004:

Well I will be sure to wear a shirt that says “I own recasted models” So that way people can clearly identify my army so they can avoid my dastardly life style.

Either way I think the horse is not only dead it’s not been beaten to glue.

Since someone dug up this old thread…  I found someone online selling shields and I thought “sweet!  Someone is selling Chaos Dwarf bits!” and I bought them.  The following day I saw this thread started and felt pretty bad about buying the shields.  I took pictures of my shipment along side an actual Forgeworld package and shields, then contacted Forgeworld and made them aware of the reseller.  Lastly I flagged the EBay items as banned (you have to be a member of law enforcement to flag them “illegal” unfortunatley).  And in my letter I compared it to selling bootlegged DVDs on the internet.  As the agrieved party, hopefully that will help Forgeworld put an end to these re-selling shenanigans on EBay.

Did you get a refund on a count of the counterfeit merchandise?

Willmark:

I think it's a shame these 'knock offs' have been stopped. FW prices are way over the top (even without shipping). Ah well. I'm just glad I've got a big hatter army and I don't want any of those silly youngbeards ;)

maded12
True that. I make PLENTY of money, and don't mind a bargain when I see one. Really try to show GW less sympathy, all manufacturers from a variety of industries (be it electronics to high end fashion) have their copyrighted TVs, Purses, apparel, etc copied and sold.. Truthfully, it doesnt bother me when i go to a "big Box" store, and it doesnt bother me now.
At the end of the day it's capitalism and economic globalization.
Think of it this way.. cheap knock offs are coming whether you like it or not, for cheap labor.... if the western world are losing their jobs to these countries why not take advantage of the small benefits of cheaper goods?
I promise you, the corp braintrust at a certain minature manufacurer cares less if you go broke buying their stuff. and probably buys discounted stuff (knock offs) a couple times in their own personal lives.

I for one hope it stays going. screw what's politically correct.
more chaos dwarf goodness for me!! mwahaha

Method
i could not disagree more.

part of the advantage of GW charging high prices and making big $ is that they also get to re-invest it into the business. that's why we get monthly new releases! new army books! monthly magazines! so much warhammer goodness to keep us busy. do you think rakham, privateer press or others can come up with new and cool stuff the way GW does? so by buying the knock offs, you also going to shot yourself in the foot. GW will not make as much and will not have as much to re-invest. i can't help but wait to hear complaints like "the new edition is out but my army book has not been updated in 8 years!" OR "these models are 15 years old and suck! every other army got new models!" OR "FW released chaos dwarfs but now they haven't been updated in 10 years!"

truth is, if you think the prices are so ridiculous and they're making a killing sitting in their leather chairs, why not buy GW stock? they offer a decent dividend and if a quarter of what you say is true, the stock can only go up from here?

Never confuse GWs dominance in a niche hobby with a major company.

I should also add that their never ending price increases has priced me out from buying new minis. And yes, their pricing is rediculous.

Generally speaking, recasters can't be shut out of eBay. Proving that you received a counterfeit to people who are not experts in toy soldiers is an uphill fight at best.

Not to mention, eBay makes it incredibly easy to create multiple IDs & shill bid your own stuff. The best game in town are "Private Listings" where nobody can tell if you shill and your sales history is blacked out. :mad

absolutely not!!

if your looking for a good deal, forget about it! they're asking almost the same price as Forgeworld stuff, and it's not as good. it's brittle and harder to work with.

i bought some stuff on ebay not realizing, and now i only buy from FW.

That website has been shut down for awhile

starscream:

nah its just moved. The quality is actually very good, its like getting a FW cast without the worries of FW quality.

and the cost seems to he half to a third of FW Thrawn.

Kera foehunter:

Either way I think the horse is not only dead it’s not been beaten to glue. and his children are glue as well

rubencm81:

I dont understand ppl buying recasts to China when you can do it yourself at home with 50$ in silicone and resin and 48 hours in time to make the molds and start casting whatever you need: shields, arms, etc… there are plenty of tutorials, just google it.

Imho, If I need 2 more inmortals, for example, I am not going to buy 5 from FW: I will just recast 1 of the one i actually have and nobody will notice it.

Grimstonefire:

I should point out that purely as an observation of course the Infernal Guard shields are very thin if you plan to cast them. They would need a little thickening imo.
