[Archive] Mantic Abyssal Dwarfs - out in February

GRNDL:

Looks like someone is a Donnie Darko fan with that Frank lookalike helmet. Definitely a different approach to CDs, but I’m sure someone can make use of them. I like individual helms and adjustments, but not all of them. There doesn’t appear to be a “consistent” look and feel to them, kinda random, but I guess that could be part of their “Chaotic” feel.

JMR:

Finally some images!

Like someone else said, they’re different from what I was expecting. I’m not sure how I feel about them yet. My first expression is “mwa”.

Come to think of it, I believe these are the first “busy” and detailed miniatures Mantic is making. There’s all those spikey bits and other small things that show the lower quality of Mantic’s sculpts that most of their miniatures suffer from. (Which is perfectly fine, considering the price.) It just shows more on these guys.

The main issue seems to be the horns. They’re round and “soft”, instead of sharp and hard.

And to close up my analysis: these are again true Mantic models. They’re different from GW stuff. They’re not cheap copies of Warhammer models, they have their own feel and style, which is a good thing.

Firehammer:

Hi,

here on this Beast of War video you find a first look on the Mantic Chaos Dwarfs (actually these are made of metal conversion bitz added to the normal Mantic Dwarfs):

Haven’t seen them in the Mantic forum or blog up to now.

Grimstonefire:

I’m actually quite impressed with these.  I had expected something along the lines of the old plastic Chosen upgrade kit for chaos warriors, but these are ‘complete’ models, if you know what I mean, rather than just a tentacle arm stuck on the side.

I agree with you JMR, these are definitely a different style to the modern CD and rightly so.  They actually look like they are straight out of Slaves to Darkness/ Lost and the Damned.  The daemon hound and bolt thrower are nice additions as well.

@Firehammer

Someone beat you to it I’m afraid. Thread merged.  Thanks for the pics though.

Edit.

There is something in the Unseen Lurker #6 about them giving away an entire Mantic army.  Not read any more about this, but for anyone interested.

Firehammer:

Yeah, but only beaten because of being posted in an obscure subforum

nitroglysarine:

the more I look at them, the more I like them, might use the upgrades for a unit of Acolites.

(as mine as so different)

Baggronor:

Well, they’re certainly a lot better than the vanilla Dwarfs. Not so bad really. Not my thing obviously, but still, the hats looks almost good. Almost.

Where did you get that piece of information ? These previews look like heavily converted plastic regular dwarves ! (which is a big difference - especially for my wallet ! :p )

gIL^:

you know we dont get many alternatives to cd’s but i dont like these, I like to see chaos dwarfs in a more uniform like appearance almost like a professional legion due to how progressive the CD’s are.

Whats with the eye?

nitroglysarine:

The eye is probably an extra on the sprues from the idea of chaos mutations.

I can’t wait to see all the options.

Tribun:

Grimstonefire:

Their Dark Elf bits are metals for the plastic sets. I expect these will be the same.

nitroglysarine:

damn, i might have bought some if they were plastic. :S

cornixt:

I like them. The sheer grumpiness is captured very well. I’d worry that such individual helmets would make them look a bit funny when ranked up though.

The_Bear_in_the_Hat:

I’m not sure that individual helms are an issue. For instance, the old Bretonnians used to have half a dozen different helms and a unified paint-job tied them together very nicely. Individualism is good for models.

Swissdictator:

Mixed feelings for me. I am not a big fan of the chaos dwarf figures that they made, however their warmachines herd are quite another story! The machines look good.

Ungrim:

I quite like them. I think that with limited modeling skills(like mine :)) you could easily convert them to your liking for a fraction of a cost of GW models.

Also when the Orcs come out I think you could get a rather large army for an acceptable price.

nitroglysarine:

I can’t wait for their goblins/orcs, the decapitated head in the Dwarf sprue looks menacing, should be nice looking!

JMR:

There’s some new pictures up on the Mantic blog showing work-in-progress greens of the Khaos Dwarfs. Yes, with a K :stuck_out_tongue:

nitroglysarine:

well a couple of those I REALLY LIKE, the others not to hot on.

its just a shame they aren’t going to be plastic really.
