[Archive] New Beastmen rumours

Thommy H:

The new minotaurs are pretty goddamn awful. I don’t get them at all.

AGPO:

Apparently a few people who have seen the actual minis in the flesh say the sprues are actually pretty awesome. What ruins them is the paint scheme - the guy who painted the studio army left dark brown in even the slightest recess, and this has led to the steroid pumped look. Looking back at the gors I can believe this. I’ve made the same mistake when highlighting - to stark a contrast just ruins the model. I’m hoping this is the case with the minos, especially as the champion looks pretty awesome

Borador:

I just checked the GW newsletter email, and I have to say they look a little bit better on those pictures, but are still ugly XD
They’ll probably be on the GW site now so the pictures can be checked there I think, checking that in a minute.

Minotaurs
Doombull
Razorgor

I can believe that actually. Still, there's an argument that a company has a duty to present its products as well as possible - if they can't advertise well, why purchase anything from them? It's like if you see a bad trailer for a movie. If they can't piece together some decent footage for three minutes, why would I want to see the complete film? Similarly, GW really ought to make sure their figures are painted as well as possible.

CheTralfara:

He’s right!

The sprues really do look good, and that Doombull is growing on me.

I think with proper assembly and paintjob and some conversion tweeks (possibly slimming down muscles by shaving and re-sculpting some)… you could make some awesome minotaurs out of them.

I am really hoping they still allow minotaurs as core with a Doombull, because I really wanna make a small minotaur themed “Daemonoid-Beasts of Hashut” army.

I’ve already begun working on the Hashut-themed “gor” replacement… it’s going to be extremely badass (it’s a suprise though)…

but yeah, I really think it is the assembly (not just the paintjob) that is making these miniatures look extremely bad… For instance… look at the poses of the standard bearer and drummer… They look “special”.

AGPO:

Sorry, no core minotours in the new list, they’re just too tough now, plus I reckon they have to give Ogres some advantage over beastmen.

Thommy H
i agree, what were they thinking making those models... he bodies are just awful and the heads... well, they just don't look very bull-like to me. The paint job might be partially responsible for their look but I'm pretty sure that even properly painted they would still be ugly as hell :hashut

AGPO:

We’ll have to wait and see until a competent painter gets hold of them

Canix:

Minotaurs=worse.minis.ever

Why do they have leaves attached to their chest and thighs.Thats hair!

Hooves or feet ? Cant decide lets give them elephantitis.

The razorgor is very poor(Pumbargor anyone) and the Centaur heros hooves have no continuity with the older centigors claws.

All those montrous creatures gone! what to do with your dragon orges now?

This release has F.A.I.L. written all over it :hat

all those monstrous creatures are still available in 'warriors of chaos' army book.

AGPO:

Well kill two birds with one stone - use your ogres and chaos trolls as minotours and your dragon ogres as razorgors

CheTralfara:

No Core Minotaurs???

I feel awful for people who spent all that money on metal Minos for their Doombull list…

That’s just ridiculous… So you can have an ALL Troll chaos army? but not an ALL Minos? I really hope that’s not true.

@ AGPO: That’d be kinda inconsistent to use them in that way… I mean sure it works, but kinda weird… If you see a troll you expect vomit and regen, etc…

Grimstonefire:

I think it is true, but before we all pass judgement on it we should wait to see what the new rules are for minotaurs.  They are not the same as before I think, a bit stronger.

AGPO:

@ Grim: I posted the new minotours rules earlier; they’re signifigantly tougher.

@ Che: I know what you mean on both counts. As far as minotours go people are going to want at least two units in even a small army, plus they can use far more minotour charcters now, so I don’t think Doombull armies will have too much hassle converting to the new list. As far as the ‘counts as’ solution goes, I think any reasonable opponent would be willing to accpet it. After all, these units no longer feature in a beastman army.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

It’s sad that the minotaur list is gone, but this is what GW do with every update to a codex or army book. Just you wait what’ll happen to your Throgg armies out there with the next edition of the Warriors of Chaos!

Up close the Minotaurs look a tad better, but I still don’t get why they had to put those awful patches of fur on them. What was wrong with the structure of the old minotaur’s hides? The Doom Bull looks cool (still, as I liked it already in the first previews) and I find the Razorgor a rather amusing little beastie.

And as a Beast of Chaos player this should comfort me in what way? That I can now buy even MORE plastic from GW to field sucky units in another army functionally equivalent to the one I already play.

The following pic says something about the problems Beast of Chaos players face. This is the army I played last Friday. Red x:ed units are gone, though models might be used some other way or counts as. But that's not the point.

Grimstonefire:

Anyone else noticed that because the fur is almost symmetrical on the chest it looks like they’ve trimmed their hair into heart shapes?  Having had a go with Zbrush recently it may be like this because when you sculpt it can do the exact same the opposite side of the centre line (it’s a lot quicker).  Looks around for gold medallion and Barry White CD

Links to sprues, if anyone is feeling lazy (or cannot get the GW site to load them :~)

The back muscles are just as bad as the front, some serious greenstuff work needed to smooth those out a bit (mix more yellow in and just smooth over with finger).

Kera foehunter:

coooooooooooooooooooooooooool great post there grims !!

look like some converion there

like a iron gollum of hashut

wallacer:

The Razorgor looks funny, although I don’t think it’s supposed to.

In fairness, Warriors of Chaos players went through exactly the same thing recently when Daemons were split off. It's not like you couldn't have seen this coming, since it's been common knowledge since the Daemons book came out that the Chaos armies were being split up into three discrete types again.

And, for what it's worth, a lot of those models will still be usable: Beastherds become Gor and Ungor units, Ogres become Ogre mercenaries and I think Giants (since that model is a Giant...) are either still in the list or might still be usable as Dogs of War. You'll just have to suck up losing Dragon Ogres but, again, this isn't new information.

Oh, and I'm pleased to see that the minotaurs look a lot better on the sprue. My fiancée is considering starting up a Beastman army, and while we could have easily gone elsewhere for minotaurs, I think she'll be pleased that the range as a whole isn't as completely awful as it looked initially.
