[Archive] New boxed army releases

Time of Madness:

I hate advertising for GW, however I think they deserve a shout out for the below deals. All 3 box sets save you a fair bit of cash. Even more cash if you can find an online retailor like me selling the paint set for $329.00 instead of the $450.00 retail. I figured it out and it looks like I got over half the paint pots for free when comparing it to normal price for 1.

Depends on what you compare with. GW RRP and you save quite a bit. Any price point you ever remember from before and it's: "wth? since when is it *this* expensive".

Sometimes you can make the currencies work for you too. Though GW kinda stopped that.

Kera foehunter:

Waaaaaaaay to much money… I’m glade im not just getting int this hobby…

But if its something you want so badly…( like big hat and slayer pirates) go for it

everyone has a weakness

Time of Madness:

Yes when you compare them to current retail prices you save a fair bit of cash. Although if you compare these to the box sets they released years ago they are very expensive.

Hashut’s Blessing:

There are 4 army boxes and it’s a yearly Christmas release of limited edition numbers to boost sales. You save some money compared to buying all the parts individually, so it’s worth it if you’re interested in that army.

beefcake:

NZ$465 for 62 Undead minis. I’m so glad I got the bulk of my undead ages ago. Good savings but still a huge wad of cash for so little in return. I just keep thinking about the reaper bones kickstarter, 3 times the minis for less than half the price. Of course they aren’t all minis that I want.

JEEPERS!!! I just saw the price for the ultimate paint set… NZ$ 860!!! 144paints. That’s really taking the p!ss. Glad I buy Vallejo paints nowadays.

Not sure how NZ$ differs from US$, but the paint set is actually a pretty good deal. It retails for $450.00 us, but there are a couple of online retailers selling it for $329.99. When you do the math it comes out to getting over 50 paint pots for free. Pretty good deal in my opinion, even if you don't ever plan on using "every" paint colour. Plus the box it comes in is the best paint storage system I've ever had.

Mad Dave:

I have to agree, i do feel sorry for people of all ages how are starting up this hobby. i’m quite lucky i buy my stuff from my local independent retailer who gives me 10-20% GW RRP or buy from online retailer. i recently got the new WOC shrine, 2boxs of skull crushers, and Khornes GF(one of the few failcast i like) for £98 which i thought was a bargin

I tend to buy my paints from gw tho as Ive had bad XP from some shops local to me where the paint pots been half open or the paints been contaminated with god knows what. I also love Ebay i hate the failcast GW puts out and if i wait and look i can usualy find a metal version on Ebay just needs TLC.

But over all i love the plastic kits and i like the idea of the new starter kits just not the price so much.

Do note that when anyone from Oz and Hobbitland looks at the prices there's a 50% inflation due to discrepancies in purchasing power parity and listed prices.
What in the UK "should" cost 544 NZD GW lists at 860... which in practice means that a lot (well all and more besides really) of the savings disappears down GW's pocket in this case.

Now ToM, are you interested in paying 540CAD for the Megapaint set? Bargain still? That's the price GW feels Canada should pay.

The biggest "issue" I see is that I'd be afraid of ruining all that paint. I have brand new GW metallics that seem to be going to hell in a handbasket after 2 weeks in my possession. A long time ago I bought a Megapaintset, got basing material and brushes for my trouble (which was a great boon for me), most of the paints ended up wastage after 10 years really, but it had a place in my plan. It got me painting for reals.
This new paintset is too expensive for an unknown quality paint.

Vogon:

To be fair these look great value for someone who is already in the hobby and looking to start a new army that happens to coincide with one of the boxes on offer.

I don?Tt think that anyone these days in under any illusion that ours is a hobby that requires a large investment of money, time and effort to get the best out of it and these boxes do look like they go some-way to help out for those that know what they?Tre doing.

On the face of it these also look like they may be a good offer for beginners as well but if the intended recipient is a genuine new comer then the Megaforce box + the starter box/big rule book + paints could very easily be overwhelming (and over-expensive) and lead to a quick exit from the hobby and a soured experience for all concerned.

The paint set I?Td be doubtful of, I mean who owns and uses every paint in the range from any manufacturer. I find that people quickly home in on a dozen or so favourite colours that they shoe into every army they paint meaning that most of the set would go to waste while the favourite ones would be bought time and time again as they run out.

Just my thoughts

Cheers

@Snowblizz - the funny thing about Canadian GW pricing, is none of the local retailers around here use the Canadian pricing guide. Our dollar is at par with the US greenback, so to stop people (like me) from buying in the US, our local retailers start there pricing at 10% less of US retail. Hope that makes sense.

However, savy buyers like me know they can still get it way cheaper in the US. The example I gave of paying $329.99 is accurate. I did pay a bit of shipping on that, however I did not get hit by customs. Canadian customs is very hit or miss. Sometimes you get dinged (anywhere from $20 - $75) and other times they let purchases slide through.

I always knew AUS/NZ was hit hard on prices, but didn’t think it was that bad! I can’t believe the prices you folks pay.

Thorne:

Hadnt it used to be 10 Reiksguard Knights; 20 Swordsmen; 20 Handgunners and a cannon for £40 not so long back ?

Karl Franz, on Deathclaw Im not up on GW prices any more but Im gurssing £50 ?

1 Captain of the Empire with Army Battle Standard (mounted) im guessing likely £15

1 Captain of the Empire (on foot) im guessing likely £10

1 Celestial Hurricanum im guessing likely £10

10 Greatswords likely to be what £20 ?

1 Helstorm Rocket Battery about £20 ?

1 Master Engineer probably £10 ? so if my guessing on prices works out correct thats about £160 worth of models for £150 so not so bad really but bad for us whom can recall when GW used to give you that all for about £80

Tell me about it. Due to current employment staus (made redundant) I'm cutting back to only 1 army. Chaos Dwarf ;), but prices here in Oz are rediculous. Curent conversion rate is about $1.04 US/Cad, but for example ultimate paint set is listed at $730 AusD and these box sets range $390 - 400 AusD.

I mean a single figure costs minimum $22-28 AusD, and that's for a rather plain fig.

One 'advantage' I supose is Forge World prices don't look quite as bad in comparison. :P

zobo1942:

That is insane. Do most people just buy via ebay to get around those prices?

Don't know for sure. As a sad commentary on younger generation and/or GW marketing, whenever I do tread carefully into a GW store (only place to buy within 100km of me) I always see somebody buying at these prices. But most people I see in GW are less than half my age. ;(

Me personally, eBay for old classics i'm chasing, overseas bits stores for parts and only very very occasional purchase in store. Most recent purchase was Mordheim Thing-in-the-Woods. And of course saving up for Forge World. The prices aren't much cheaper at Australian online stores in my experience. Gamers (including RPG folk) are in the wrong country for cost here.

I see the same here in the states. It's usually people who are JUST getting into the hobby and have no guidance, or young (10-15ish) whom have their parents credit cards and have no idea how much they're actually spending.

odd footnote: The most I've ever seen purchased at a GW store was by an Aussie. He had three stacks as tall as him and was so happy. He was going to take these all home and 'make a fortune'.

good for that guy.

Back on topic, I like the new army sets. The VC one is just short of Grave Guard to making a fine 1/2 army. That and a battalion make a fine force.

They may not be the cheapest, but its at least a flimsy way to get people into the hobby/ diff. armies.

(plus I love that damn Terrorgheist model, but HATE the faq's for it)

Vogon:

Prices taken from the GW website

Karl Franz, on Deathclaw £33

2 Captains of the Empire with Army Battle Standard (mounted, and on foot combined plastic kit) £18

1 Celestial Hurricanum £32.50

12 Reiksguard Knights £20

20 Swordsmen (assuming they mean Free Company) £20.50

10 Hand gunners £15.50

10 Greatswords £25.50

1 Helstorm Rocket Battery about £15.50

1 Master Engineer £9

Total £189.50

Total saving £39.50 if you buy direct from GW on the empire set.

Personally I buy mostly from eBay apart from paints and books which I still buy from my local store as that is where I go for gaming on a Thursday evening.

My (Forge World) Chaos Dwarf army is pretty much the only models I’ve bought direct in a dog’s age and even then I only buy these when I’m going to Warhammer World or Games Day to save on postage

Oh I know all that. For quite a while the Euro had a significant advantages to the pound which I used last year to buy Skaven.

I'm saying the level of "deal" you get varies a lot on circumstances. Since your CADs buy a lot more in USD (even if buying locally) and you get it at a discount it naturally looks more attractive. The official discount if you will is around 16% and whatever the rack is worth.

All of these are actual deals though, but exactly *how* good depends...
Regardless of what you can get it for, would you be as eager to buy it at 540CAD?

Time of Madness:

I’d never buy it at $540.00 That would be over $200.00 more then I paid.
