I like the airships and can see them as a good source for conversions ( the small one would look good mashed with the small Titan Forge zeppelin) and the large one pretty much as-is with suitable CD changes. The Infantry is ok but the “Thunderers” look like they would make a nice basis for a heavy “Immortal” squad for my Chaos Space Dwarfs ( graft some big hats on them and lose the vanilla dwarf iconography).
Oh wow just got my first look at the Karador Overlords, and while I do like the air-ships and some of the units as a standalone I have to say pulling away from classic fantasy to a full blown magitech-steampunk faction just doesn?Tt feel good to me. A cool airship amongst dwarves is a wonder, a whole faction of crazy steel balloon pilots just feels like another case of them making AoS way too 40k.
What I like: They look fun Lots of different poses - Refreshing after the 8th edition monopose-but-thousand-parts models
My immediate though was that they would not look out of place in 40k. Seems that Chaos is not longer the only army where you can play both systems with the same models.
The paint job is rather bland - brass and black. One of the key parts of having a nice looking army is to not give in to paining everything on a model made of metal to look like unpainted metal. More red or blue parts would have been nice.
I like them, I have no use for them, I will probably not buy any of them, they probably cost way too much for even a fun one-off purchase. But it’s not fantasy any more. And what the heck are they harpooning?
They really are going after the WoW crowd with AoS aren’t they? :cheers
I love the airships, really cool. The infantry could have done with a more striking silhouette maybe. Really like the leader models, especially that crazy dude with the top hat
Squats return! Marvellous and weird miniatures, though too long-legged. The ball shape is the ideal body form. Not much use in fantasy except for conversion basis or if you run a steampunk theme, but boy are they good sci-fi models. The airships are particularly good. Will have to get 'em in due time for my space dwarfs, and maybe sell some unbuilt Forgefathers. Unlike Mantic’s Forgefathers, I don’t think these need any addition of details to pop, so conversion time will be low.
I’m glad companies like Avatars of War cater with quality miniatures to the Tolkienish-Warhammerish classic fantasy collectors with their ranges, now that GW for the moment pulls away from that niche (a return is of course not impossible). Their ranges still have a long way to go before they can cover up all the gaps left by Games Workshop’s retreat, not to speak of the loss of plastic kits in the classic fantasy niche.
I do like the idea of the tri-barrel guns and have had that thought in the back of my mind for ages after differing stories in Sci-Fi and fantasy. The “Ducks Foot” gun is also interesting as I haven’t seen it in a miniature before.
Just have to wait for GW to try and copywrite them now.
I have to say until now i thought AoS felt rather soulless compared to Fantasy but i actually like this army theyve got an unique feel. Can also be because ive been reading Gotrek and Felix recently and the airship in that book is quite advanced ^^
So GW have stopped ripping off Tolkien and are now going to be ripping off Rackham Miniatures. Swell...
wallacer
They are very much like Rackham's Tir-Na-Bor dwarfs. Even the backpacks and their weird power source is straight out of Rackham. I bet they are smaller though and would look like a child next to a Rackham dwarf.
Something I’ve just noticed while watching yesterday’s BoW Weekender - one of the characters (second pic in the OP) looks a lot like an update on Astragoth - similar exoskeleton and he even has a nifty Big Hat! Remove the wrist mounted gun and flight pack and swap the chaonsword for a pneumatic hammer and a more appropriate paint job and it’d work well as an updated version of the ol’ High Priest (in fact if you were to do a homebrew campaign where the Warhammer World wasn’t destroyed, I could see him fitting in as an Astragoth who’s Sorcerer’s Curse has progressed even further than the old mini).
