[Archive] New GW Website

Skink:

What do you guys think of it? A lot of classic miniatures are gone, and the collectors range (such as “the chase” for Orc and Goblins) has been moved in their respective race’s main selection. Bretonnia’s range is as scrawny as it was before, the Hellcannon is back online, and nothing happened to Wood Elved & Tomb Kings (there were rumors about them in other forums). Now to view the miniatures range you use a filter system, which can be a tad confusing at the beginning, but in the end works better than on the old website… Last couple of things, first of all now you can choose to buy either “Griffon + Empire Lord”, “Griffon + Karl Franz” or “Griffon + Amber Wizard”, what does that mean? That now the kit is not multipart as it used to be before? Has it decrease in price as far as you know? Second, I might be mistaken but some of the characters seem to cost less… Was the clampack Goblin Shaman 6£ before?

It still contains all three variants, they've just listed it three times for whatever reason.

I'm ambivalent towards the new design. Overall I prefer the old site, but I can see the new design being good for newbies who aren't sure where to look for minis and useful for cross army comparrisons if you're looking for specific things for kitbashing. Personally I'm finding it a bit awkward due to my familiarity with the old site as I'm used to just clicking between sections (eg if you're looking at Core and wanted to look at Rare you just clicked on Rare and got taken to the Rare page) rather than having to deselect what was previously being looked at as well (e.g. If you're looking at Lords and Heroes and want to go look at Special, now you have to click on Special and then click on Lords and Heroes to uncheck it); it's not a big thing and only takes a couple seconds more but it is mildly irritating.

Think GW have dropped the ball with their exclusive mini for orders over £60 - should have had three options (one for each system) rather than just a Space Marine to encourage those who don't play 40k to spend more.

Also, it's been a while since I ordered from their site, but is it just me or has the threshold for free shipping gone up? Could have sworn it was £10 last time I checked :s

Admiral:

Thumbs up for the exclusive miniature. It must be the first time ever I’ve seen GW pull out such a thing.

I agree with Dînadan. I prefer the older layout, but especially the one before that, which had background articles. I much miss large parts of the long-since diminishing collectors range. The gradual disappearance of especially 6th edition goodies like Diaz Daemonettes and metal Dark Elf Executioners alienates me somewhat to GW’s current range of products. Metal Dwarf Longbeards are also in there, regardless of which edition they were released in.

Sure there are lots of things I like there, but some of the very special ones have been replaced with blander ones for some time now, or just went out of the window completely like the Kislev range, Regiments of Renown and almost all Storm of Chaos miniatures. That lessens my attachment to GW’s standing miniature lines somewhat.

Edit: And let’s be honest. If GW’s new website design is aimed at beginners, then they’re aiming at a diminishing customer group. GW’s price levels in particular scares would-be hobbyists away from Warhammer. The prices have always been high, but now they’re skyrocketing towards Himalaya heights…

Roark:

It’s about 800% faster on Android. Looks pretty good… apart from the fact that it’s just a webstore. Ah well.

Roark:

My god… $61AUS for a Nurgle Lord…

It’s been a while.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

The lack of FAQs and their apparent lack of interest in putting any in place is what worries me. Unmodified Leadership, the Power Scroll, and various army books being somewhat unplayable is troubling.

To paraphrase another poster on the internet, imagine a new player shows up with a Power Scroll thinking it does what it does in the book and his opponent pulls out a now-defunct FAQ.

I’m not a GW hater (well, I hate their prices…). But this lack of support is really starting to chaff. Hmm…I wonder if GW hates us and our whining instead? wanders off mumbling to himself

Xander:

No specialist games… o.o

gIL^:

Well it works, Ive seen more minis in 5 min than in a year on the other website, Everything is so accessible, Not behind fiddly tabs,

gIL^:

Little bit of info, It handy shows you whats online only and technically exclusive there, Half of the products are, Including the Hellcannon.

AN example, Warriors of chaos have 59 products and 30 are Web Only!

And WTF happened to Bretonnia? 12 Products? Somethings got to be going on.

Shame the afromentioned forgeworld merge with GW didn’t happene

I do like the new site, and echo the cries that there is not enough ‘hobby support’, there should be articles and tutorials and FAQ’s on there!

Has it decrease in price as far as you know? Second, I might be mistaken but some of the characters seem to cost less… Was the clampack Goblin Shaman 6£ before?

Skink
I’ve had that impression as well!! can anyone verify that? because this sounds unbelievable

That would be odd to say the least. The weird thing though is that stuff costs pence, I don't remember that before.
Really funny is that it doesn't actually show the plastic clampack shaman for me... oh. I see it's rare, not listed under lords&heroes.

torn:

Its much better for tablets. Still not gonna buy anything from it.

I can remember the old trollz order forms, spending ages writing stuff down out of the catalogue.

Also for free stuff can anyone remember the cards that got stamped and when you bought certain stuff you got other stuff free?

MadHatter:

I find the new page somewhat “flat”… :~

It may be the new times (and everything was always better in the old days, rabble rabble) but the fantasy genre in general is not suggestive anymore. The stimulation of suggestion makes peoples imagination run and that’s why people are still into the worlds of nostalgic old fantasy games for the pc, etc.

As for GW and forgeworld… Actionposed dynamic miniatures are a wonder to behold, however they have already been imagined and given a character and take a huge step away from the suggestiveness as ‘boardgame pieces’. Same with all this “rethinking” of lore, changing the history of characters (skrag the slaughterer) etc. instead of just expanding on the great work things are just made more complicated and I think thats just careless to long time fans and confusing to new ones. This is because many people think of their army as football fans think of their team.

If they made a suggestive page with this in mind with lore-content and artworks and stuff, then I believe that would spark more sales.

For a hobby as pricy and demanding as WH fantasy it’s lunacy to follow mainstream fantasy. Obviously they can’t start reproducing 80’s and 90’s miniatures after taking this step, I think the homepage and armybooks is their last chance to bring back the suggestion and magic to the hobby, as of now I believe everything runs on loyal longtime fans and will be dying because in the current ‘lack of suggestion’ people can get into similar worlds alot easier via pc-games.

I agree about the new website looking flat, though part of me likes it for being more organised, and it flows a lot better too.

However, with the comparison of the artwork, both have their charms, but I definitely prefer the new one. The newer artwork inspires more of a sense of scale, what with all the details in the background, and a general sense of dread.
Whereas the classic picture is a little too cartoony, and i suppose lacking in that sense of dread consequently. Though I like both, so it doesn't matter!

It might just be a matter of taste, I got into the hobby once mainly because of the artworks so I'm partial but hey, just look at that cute witchelf. I've been in love with her since the first time I opened the battlebook :D

But yeah, things change and I don't know anything about business... However I wish the game still had been suggestive the way it was, on the other hand I have naturally the choice to just collect the old stuff ;)

I'm bound to agree. However, many of the newer High Elf paintings usually have a washed-out, very pale colour scheme which I find distracts a bit from the bloody "reality" the picture is supposed to convey. But making Elven things pale as the flag of Finland is normal practice for GW since many years.

Yes, I think it's very much about timing of entry and apex of fun ("good old days") in the hobby and associative factors.

Your lady is fine, but I find the one in the latest army book to be more to my taste. Dark eyes, bathed in blood, and grinning like a lunatic.

gorgeous :o the 90's one has some sweet innocence about her, however can't put my finger on it now when comparing... might just be old flames die hard, eh?

Oh, also thanks GW for getting poor decent lads into psychotic alt. chicks x.x
