Continuing the tradition of the over-pricedelite units, it seems certain now that all Special foot-troops will cost (in my case) 5 dollars per model. I used to be glad that metal models were being replaced by plastic ones. But this pricing scheme will likely prohibit me from ever buying such units; a unit of 20 elite elves is $100.
The Island of Blood is looking like an even better deal now…
I think they look like what they should look like: elite guards. They remind me of the Fountain Guard from LOTR. They have a great weight to them, both physically and in the way they’re posed.
I like the dragon princes and phoenix guard (compared to the metals), but the white lions are inferior imo as they are all in the same pose.
Being plastic if you’re a good at converting it would be possible to chop them up, but it’s a lot more work compared to the metals (which look very similar in quality and are much better posed).
Okay seriously? That’s moronic pricing! Why should one unit of plastic troops cost twice what another one does, despite having the same numbers? I don’t have an issue with models being expensive, because of the extra service you get from GW compared to other companies. However it irritates me that they should price elite troops more highly just for the sake of it, especially when trying to encourage large units. £50 for a unit of White Lions or Pheonix Guard is too much.
As for the dragon princes I am not a fan. I think I will order the heads off hoardobits and convert some silver helms. The steeds just look ugly to me. The White lions are good sculpts and an improvement on the metals, but are a little too monopose. As for the pheonix guard, they look awesome, just not like Elves. They’re too broad and don’t really evoke the feel of the artwork
the dragon princes are awesome! white lions are ok but the phoenix guard look terrible :(
warh
Sorry to say - but I think you turned this upside down - what you meant was that Phoenix guards looks great - but those dancing white lions aren't worth a penny ;)
I really, really like the Phoenix guards. Their helmets ain't the best - but other then that excellent sculpts.
The dragon princes is high quality sculpts to - but when you add such high detailed miniatures into a unit - the starts to look busy. They would be perfect for solo character - but together well ...?? - not exactly my cup of tea
Unit of 5 DP would go for 23,50 euro’s: 'normal" box of 5 metal DP would cost me about 50 euro’s at the store, so all in all a pretty good price (they do look 5th ed. though, but not bad at all :))

clam
not sure that was what I ment but if it makes you happy its ok;P
the reason I don't like the Phoenix guard is the broad shoulders, they look to static and most of all the helmets:sick
They’re supposed to be static, aren’t they? They’re royal guards who stand there and cut down the charging foe like wheat with their big halberds. These models are the personification of “all High Elves get ASF”…which is probably why they’re proving so divisive…

What is it with GW sculptors and high elf hands! seriously, them white lions hands are smaller than a skaven clan rat - imagine how ridiculous that is going to look next to your melon handed spearmen! and the phoenix guard - I love the armour, better than the chainmail mini-skirts the last lot wore, I’m happy with the posing and the halberds are spot on - but the shoulders are far too broad and those helms are just stupid - one strong gust of wind and the stoic guardsmen of the phoenix king would be stuck together by their tangled headgear in a scene straight from a monty python sketch. dear oh dear oh dear. The dragon princes steal the show, they do look pretty cool and I will certainly be adding them to my little collection - but at £25 a pop for 10 models, WLs and PG can stay on the shelf for me, the IoB swordmasters are leagues ahead.
They try to justify it by saying “but they’re a 60 part kit” - I don’t care if it’s a 250 part kit, they’re still just 10 models.
EDIT: Sorry folks, I appear to be moaning quite a lot just recently - I’ll stop soon I promise!! (maybe when the car is back on the road and the kids are back at school!!)
I like all the new models, altho at first I couldn’t tell the difference between the metal white lions and the plastic ones (only for a couple of seconds).
But Xander is right, $50 Canadian for ten plastic models is pushing it. Off the cliff and into the Sea of Prohibitively Expensive Things.
