[Archive] New High Elf Plastics

AGPO:

I suppose justifying the pricing depends on what context you are going to use the minis.

1) The Pure Painter: For this guy the White Lions/Pheonix Guard are a rip off - yes £25 is justified for that many hours entertainment, but he can get the same number of little plastic artworks to entertain him at half the price if he buys a different unit.

2) The Gaming Club Member: For this guy we must look from an army-wide perspective. Assuming he goes to a gaming club to hang out with his mates and play competitive games, then putting together a new army is far more expensive than say, a Sky Sports subscription for your lads’ night, not to mention the time it takes to put it together/collect a playable force. If it’s casual strategy gaming, then Napoleon: Total War is only marginally more expensive than a single box, for an infinite variety of scenarios and armies.

3) The Tournament Player: This is the only guy for whom making special units more expensive than core makes sense. Even so, this guy will play about three tournaments a year, and will have a new army each year. Not really great value.

4) The All-Round Hobbyist: For this guy, an army is a long term investment. A new unit will be added to existing armies every so often, giving him many hours of painting pleasure which produces something he can game with. £50 say for a unit of 20 Pheonix Guard is not unreasonable in this situation.

Loki:

I had a chance last week to build the new dragon princes and i can certainly say they are some very cool models, i also built some of the white lions but i am not sold on these guys don?Tt like the pose and some of the arms do not match up right, and i am not sold on the phoenix guard just don?Tt like the look of the models at all

Yeah, guess who GW consider their core market to be?

Fallen246:

Yeah, a Prince on a Griffon is worth at least 350 points, I'd say (I don't have the High Elf book so that's an educated guess)...

Thommy H
100% spot on actually, if you don't give him any upgrades.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Excellent models, but I’m glad I still play CD’s. I have a few BFSP sets that GW gave me to demo that will become an entirely massive army once I get everything finished!

Haha. Win.

200 dollars well spent? (100 pounds!)

hate to say it, i have 100 great swords and they only cost me £30 - i think that they were recasts, but if they were they were very, very good.

Still, i really prefer the new models to the old metal ones.

Hahahah not by a long shot. Too expensive imo.
Ps. spot the metal model aka Waldo :P

Was discussing this on the Herdstone where I made the following comparison.

OK, so I compared some of the boxes of sprues on the GW webpage.

Some interesting thoughts.

New Seekers, £15, large-tripple-sprue, full of “air”

Chaos Knights, £15, large-tripple-sprue, jam packed full

Marauder horse, £15, large-tripple-sprue, jam packed full

Gors, ungors, £15, double-sprue, jam packed full

Warhounds, £15, double-sprue, a bit light

Daemonettes, £15, double-sprue, not too crowded

Minotaurs, £27, large-tripple-sprue, packed

HE DPs, £18, large-tripple-sprue, packed

Skaven clanrats, £20, double-sprue, packed

Stormvermin, £30, double-sprue, almost packed

Doomwheel, £20, large-tripple-sprue, kinda “airy”

Bestigors, £25, small-tripple-sprue x2, almost packed

Phoenix guard, £25, small-tripple-sprue x2, almost packed

White lions, £25, small-tripple-sprue x2, almost packed

Comparing the new sprues.

1 large-tripple-sprue = 2x small-tripple-sprue

1 double-sprue = 2/3 large-tripple-sprue

1 small-tripple-sprue = 3/4 double-sprue

so looking on pure “square-footage” (how much stuff you could get) there are pretty interesting variations. Also in how “packed” the sprues are, ie how much stuff you actually get.

New plastic Seekers are a complete rip-off. The only why they look good is in comparison to old metals.

The other cavalry boxes are good, DPs have an unexplainable 3£ “premium”.

The Gor and Ungor are a bit expensive considering you have 1/3 less in the box compared to same price cav.

Minotaurs compare very unfavourably, as do the elite infantry boxes, while they contained the “maximum” amount of stuff they are priced way higher than similar sized sets.

Obviously I’ve left some of the old sprues out for now, but I may take a look at some of the kits I’ve got available.

The Skaven kits area bit odd, you pay extra for getting appropriate box content IMHO. They could easily have charged 15£, and Skaven would not be penalised for needing larger units in general.

By and large if we take the “best value boxes” as a bench mark, and I think that is reasonable, GW is rather rude in pricing the new elite plastics and somewhat greedy when it comes to some basic infantry.

nitroglysarine:

My griffons have arrived, spotted one think that i’m going to have to add to make it look like the normal lion/eagle combo - fur on the end of the tail!, its to cat like atm.

Baggronor:

£100 is too much imo. £60 is more like it.

Actually, as a Skaven player, I'm very happy with the new boxes. Clanrats went down by 20% when they changed their pricing structure, new plastic Stormvermin are 25% cheaper than their old metal counterparts, even if they are 166% the price of the clannies.

A good example here then of inventory costs, I'm due to have the equivalent of eight Clanrat boxes in my army, but only two boxes of Stormvermin.
