I’d like to point out that they say 60 pieces like it’s great. Say the body is one piece, the head another, two separate arms. That’s 40 pieces, then there are 6 pieces for the command upgrade. That’s a random 14 pieces extra that aren’t going to be anything to shout out about…
I’d like to point out that High Elves are an army that can be played all elite, so they expect people to buy the specials/rares regardless of price (stupid thought there), but get loads to take advantage of that fact. If they’d priced them at the same price as the othe rnew boxes, they’d make a fortune on them (Phoenix Guard in particular).
Games Workshop need to realise that they are consistently alienating customers.
Can anyone explain why Chaos Knights are cheaper than the dragon princes? they are bulkier and have just as many options. They just squeeze every last penny they possibly can from us!!
@HB
According to the FAQ for 8th, HE are not immune to the min 25% core, and the only difference is the limit for multiple Special and Rare.
@ nitro
It’s a cross falcon and jaguar, so it’s meant to be less bulky and more elegant than the lion/eagle combo.

Hammerhand
Yup, pretty much, the only think I can kind of understand is that they have paid out for a load of new casting equipment that allows better castings - guess they are trying to recoup/profit?? - i maybe wrong or outdated in that info though.

Ahhh, so its not 'technically' a griffon, kind of a skinny genetic cousin.

Just because it is "supposed to" look like something doesn't mean it looks good.
I agree with the sentiment that it looks a bit weedy and that reduces my interest*, regardless if that is the effect they were trying to get or not.
*if it wasn't part of the starter set I would not buy that model.

Hammerhand
Because they can charge more for the Dragon Princes. They are released soon so they price them accordingly to their price de jour. I'd expect the other cavalry boxes to increase to this in the next "price correction round".
It was what, six months ago that 10 metal Pheonix Guard would have cost you £24. Now the plastics are £1 more expensive. THis during a recession when everyone's disposable income is going down.
AGPO
However, you're comparing a pre-price-rise price on an old product to a pose-price-rise price on a new product. That's two variables, rather than a linear comparison.
If you wanted to argue about the original price rise on the metals, fair enough, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but arguing that the new plastics are more expensive than an out-dated metal price is just folly.
So their logic becomes, "But people will buy less Special than Core!" This is a silly assertion.
Xander
Indeed, but that's not quite the assertion.
The assertion is that as the non-core units will be bought in lesser frequency overall, their inventory cost will be higher and hence it's more costly a product to supply to the public.
Previously, they applied the range's total inventory cost equally across all models, making core units priced artificially high.
Games workshop have been of the opinion for a long time that metal miniatures are not worth more than plastic. They've just got to convince the majority of their customers this is the case.
Grimstonefire
The problem here is that plastics where traditionally sold at a much smaller margin to make them sell as the quality was so poor. There is no longer a quality differential inherent in the casting medium. Plastics are cheaper to produce hence the price decrease I mentioned, compared to the current metal costs.
5 slaves says someone is going bring up how inflation really means they aren't that expensive at all...
snowblizz
I usually bring up inflation, but not to say things aren't expensive, but rather to quash the notion of just how expensive things are. People comparing the price of a Rhino in 1988 to a Rhino in 2008 is a good example, even if you don't take the better quality of model into account.
A good way of showing the increase in pricing would be to track the price change of White dwarf. what's it atm? £4.50? £5?
it started at 50p
I know content has changed, colour picture etc...
anyone know what years they did the price jumps?
nitroglysarine
It's £4.50 right now. As a printed product it goes up 50p a time every several years. I could theoretically look through my back-issues to see about how often it's gone up.

It would be awesome to find out the times and see if it is in line with inflation :-D
-but don't put yourself out with it.
Hammerhand: That’s true, but since up to 75% of your army can be rare/special, you can theoretically spend the non-core (minus 1 character) section of your points on Phoenix Guard and White Lions, in loads of units, so it’s still an army where people are likely to be more inclined to have bought several of those boxes to take advantage of the fact that a 5,000 point army can have 12 units of White Lions (extrems, but true).
I remember being really outraged about the price of the new Greatswords. In fact, I remember being outraged about how a Space Marine Tactical Squad cost double what it did when it first came out, and how a single metal figure could cost, like, £8. I remember arguing for a long time on the internet about how they’re not at all in line with inflation and how they’re pricing themselves out of the market and how awful this monstrous price gouging is.
Then I got a job.
Okay, so I’m being a little facetious but, actually, given that I only have limited time to buy and paint figures, and even more limited time to play with them (because of the job), I can actually afford to drop a fair bit of money on one unit (again, because of the job). £25 for a weekend’s painting doesn’t seem that bad of an investment to me, actually. And I really do like the Phoenix Guard…
Oh all we need is a human paladin called Leeroy Jenkins and we can all create our own blood elf models in a WoW style, "Right guys thumbs up lets do this ! ! ! ! ! " Que mad rush ! “LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEROY Jenkins !” Oh wait this is warhammer in theory ! Hate hate hate these models big time and darn ! I can make a whole army cheaper than a single good sized unit of these guys …

Oh well, how did John Howe put it when he designed the fellbeasts for Lord of the Rings movie? Something like I don’t care if it works or not. It looks COOL so leave me alone… LOLZ
I’m actually quite glad they exaggerate things in WoW to a ridiculous level. Otherwise the armour and weapons would look like the regular fantasy movie / game stock.

I should be doing some re-shelving this week, so I'll try and have a look.
Yeah, a Prince on a Griffon is worth at least 350 points, I’d say (I don’t have the High Elf book so that’s an educated guess), so you’re talking a minimum of 1400 points. But this isn’t the first time a starter box has included a “full army” that isn’t technically legal: Assault on Black Reach’s Space Marine force consists of 1 HQ, 1 Troops and 2 Elites.
I don’t think it’s so much a ploy as it is pretty sensible marketing - it’s a “starter” box after all. They’ve never pretended they want customers to stick with just that. It should hook newbies in. That’s what it’s for.
