[Archive] So I started a Chaos Dwarf Army...Update 8-24-13

Gunnerson:

Maby this will turn into a WIP blog for my Chaos Dwarf army, seems like it might be fun to do one. Or more likley my slackerisim will kick in and ill be bored with it after this post. If it does become a WIP blog I am going to need to figgure out how to resize pics to keep them within the size limits provided by the site. I might just link my Flicker/Photobucket deal but, that in my opinion would be counterintuituve. I’m not super ambitious so we will have to see…For right this second due to some very ambitious tradeing on my part I have managed to aquire starting in Febuary with 0 chaos dwarfs in my possesion the following list:

63 Blunderbus

6 sets of command

2 astrogath

3 sorcerer prophets

35 metal GW dudes

41 plastic GW dudes

2 tarus

1 lamassu

3 dreadquake mortars +crews

4 deathshreaker rockets +crews

1 hellcannon +crew

2 spare Dreadquake crew

2 Bazooka

2 hobgoblin boltthrowers + crew

1 nib Gazak Kahn

6+ hobgoblins (assorted axe bow sneaky gits) +command

1 Hobgoblin Wolf Rider Champion (for use as a Kahn)

1 Tenderizer almost forgot!

The cost once shipping is factored in about $150-$200. The expensive part was the ummm I dunno we will say 100+ hours on bartertown,CDO,Ordo,Dakka and a few others working out trades. I would work out extremly convoluted 2-3 sometimes 4 way trades.

My Forge World collection consists of:

1 Deathshreaker rocket

3 Bull Centaur Renders

1 Bale Tarus

10 Iron Guard with Hw/S

Waiting on

30 Fireglaves

3 command sets

1 Iron Deamon Skull Craker

I will soon be placing a FW order for

1 Iron Deamon

1 Magma Cannon

3 Bull Centaur Renders

1 Dread Quake

1 Bull Centar Tar’Uk(sp?)

10 IronGuard with Hw/S

Gunnerson:

(I started this yesterday on my local message board so I have copied and pasted the 2 entries here its why they are rapid fire!!)

I just started painting this horde a few days ago. My first 10 minis are 3 command and 7 blunderbuss. I started with a white primer and basecoated with a Vallejo…Wound Red(I think). Its the darkest Vallejo red I could find. I took some pics but they are on my PC at home. I shot the minis with my Pache 2 action airbrush using a 2oz(I think) jar. The red paint was thinned with a combination of Golden matt medium and tap water. I was hoping for a a darker shade and I plan to hit them with a wash of Badab Black aka Nuln Oil (I think). Once that drys I am going to hit them again with a sligtly less diluted pot of the same red as before.

I also tested a new to me product by Vallejo called Liquid Mask. I painted all the skin and beards prior to airbrushing and then coated them with the liquid mask. The stuff went on smoothly but renderd the brush unusable to future paint but okay for using the mask or Elmers glue. I havent peeled off the mask yet because ill be spraying again and can provide my thoughts on the mask results at that time.

Sence I have been unable to to schedule a Leauge game for today I might just go home and add some pics to to this thread.

Gunnerson:

Here are a couple more pics of the WiP. Probably wont get much work done again before the weekend…

Glimpse the Void:

Welcome and have fun

Gunnerson:

havin fun with it so far!

Abecedar:

very ambitious indeed. i thought I had a “gotta get them bug” but it took me years to get that many.

Gunnerson:

In other news…  I skipped my war at sea game tonight totally looking forward to peeling off the liquid mask and getting going on the army and hopefuly busting out the first batch of 10 dudes by sunday maby a week from sunday, but it is not to be. The liquid mask bonded to the textred surfaces of the beards hair and hands. Peeling it off proved to be quite difficult in some places and impossible in others. I thought my plan was a good 'un but it was a fail. I will be stripping these 10 after next payday. I pusted out the Skull white and started primeing another 10. Ill  shoot them Friday or saturday and skip the mask. Ill paint them the way I normally do. Killed my brainiac plan to try somthing new…

On the Bright side I had somthing in the mail today!

I had been considering it for a while. When I finally got a copy of Tamarakahn that got the ball rolling.

Fuggit Khan:

Bummer about the liquid mask mishaps…I have found over the years that liquid masks tend not to work well on anything but small flat area’s. And even then it can be a hit or miss result…but no pain no gain, right? Looking forward to seeing more progress

I got a bunch (very subjective wording there) of painting done on 10 fresh dudes during Sunday. I took some pics and will probably post them up tonight if I get a chance. Ive got class on Monday and Weds after work and WHFB escilation leauge on Tuesday so it might not be till later in the week but I aim for tonight!

Gunnerson:

So I spent most of mothers day painting. My folks are in another state at the moment so the wife and I took Grandma out and visited her mom for a bit in the morning. By noonish I was painting and watching Samauri Champloo. Unfortunatley these resized pics dont quite do justice to the paint. I got the skin, beards, hair, and eyes done for the most part. I started on the armour and the blunderbusses. I am using the Bazooka team as a filler because A) its neat and B ) what else would I do with the mini…I think im going to pick out the blunderbus trim in an orange/yellow and I am thinking the armour details in a blue. No set on the colors yet though. I tried doing a Blue and Yellow pattern on the rocket that the Bazooka loader uses but I kind of hate it. I think I might change that to a Black/White pattern.

Gunnerson:

A few more of the WiP. I would like to have more time to work on stuff but its pretty rough. I get like 0 time Monday-Weds. I end up with 1-2 hours Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday are broken up between this and practice for an upcomming tourney along with all of the weekend house chores of a home owner and keeping the wife and dogs happy.

Gunnerson:

So I think I want to do a pattern on the Rocket that the Bazooka loader is holding. I am not too sure on the color. I tried a Blue/Orange check pattern which would match with the trim colors for the armour and blunderbus bit It was rotten. Would Black and White work out??:hat off

Fuggit Khan:

Personally I love black/white checkerboard patterns…stems from my old school love of 40k Goffs. You could also try a ‘flame’ pattern, similar to the flame patterns on the night goblin hoods. Another nice option (which I first saw being done by Soul Assassin) is painting on some Chaos Dwarf runes of some sort…

I think Ill try the checks. Im not too great with freehand scroll work and ive just started working at boxes and the like.

Here is an update with some more paint! I got 1/2 day off work today so I used it to paint. Still working but I need a break. Trying to figgure out if I like the helmets. I dont think I like the orange on the robes underneith. I had hoped this would be easier to decide on colours. I had somthing in mind but I dont think its going to work out. I have added a lighter grey to the the "tops" of the blunderbus  and started catching the trim. Here are a couple pics!

Gunnerson:

Here is some more WiP. I think I decided on a  lava type of base.  Here you can kind of see a little bit better the orange robes and sleeves I refered to in the prior post.  Its the little bits that hang out under the armour. I was thinking of doing a blue for all the detail bits on the hats but I dont think that will come off quite rite. Also I am a lazy painter and dont want to have to test out more colors than necessary. With a 40 hour work week, class 2 nights a week, house chores dogs that need walking and so on I feel pretty crunched for precious painting time and then use it on “testing” rather than finished products…Anyway here are some more pics!

Gunnerson:

And 1 more just for good measure…The dude looks like he is leaning, becaue he is! He is not glued in yet. I just stuck him there to get a feel for how it might look.

Fuggit Khan:

Very nice! I like the old school color schemes…you mentioned ‘testing’ out some different colors. Well, there is a quick and easy way to do it without torturing your model to 20+ layers of paint:

Take a pic of the model and then use some sort of photo-shop software or the standard Windows accessory ‘paint’ to try out as many colors as you like in jpeg.

I had not considered that....

Yodrin:

Very nice, good job mate!!

Thanks Yodrin!

So for the hats Ive decided on a similar color pallete to the Blunderbus but reversed! I am doing the large flat parts of the hats in a color that runs Yellow through orange. On the detail areas of the the hats I think I will perhaps run grey shades or black on the detail pieces.
