[Archive] So I started a Chaos Dwarf Army...Update 8-24-13

Gunnerson:

To my followers, I apoligize for last nights rage. It was a very fustrating situation after spending several weeks working on this thing to have it turn out thusly as a direct result of something I applied to it either the pigment or the sealer.

Fuggit Khan:

Bummer…but I’d hate to see you toss it out after so much love went into it. If you’re serious about starting over on it, you might want to consider using Testors brand ELO:

http://www.testors.com/product/137350/F542143//ELO_Paint%26_Decal_Remover_8oz.

I’ve used it before many times, it strips paint pretty quick…I use an old toothbrush to get at all the nooks and crannies with the stuff. I’ve never used it on a resin kit, so I’m not sure if it would ‘eat’ into the resin or not, but it’s perfectly safe on plastic models.

You might also want to consider giving up on the pigments? You can get the same look with washes and oil paints I think. Good luck in whatever direction you take with it

:cheers

Gunnerson:

Thanks for the link! A friend reminded me about Dettol for stripping which works great. I dont think Im going to touch it again for some time though. I like the idea of pigments and have spoken with the fella that runs Secret Weapon and Ill take another crack at pigments based on his description.

Bloodbeard:

I had just looked at the pictures, not read your rage text. Maybe it’s the pictures cheating, but I like the look the model has. What you call “frosted”, I think it looks like dust on the pictures - maken the model even more weathered down.

Soulassassin:

Agree with Bloodbeard here, I totally see your frustration but I think the model looks good!

When I get undesired effects on a model (wash pools up and creates white areas etc) I shade the whole area again with several coats of normal black paint, water and a drop of painting medium. You should be able to shade back down to a “basecoat and a wash” look, and then you can do some highlights on the weatherings.

What ever you decide, good luck! :cheers

Gunnerson:

Bloodbeard and soulassasian, thanks for the compliments and suggestions. I may work on it again or I may not! :mad I have Great Anger and feel a need for Furious Vengance! I will likely do somthing with it but itll be a while before I do. I have been working on Astrogath and my Ogre loader for my Dreadquake. I also shot some axe dwarfs over the week so hopefully Ill get my first washes on them and get the flesh, beards and perhaps armour done this weekend.

Gunnerson:

Astrogath and a slave ogre, still need to do the bases but this is it so far. Need to do something about banners. I tried contacting the banner guy from bartertown but have not heard back.

Fuggit Khan:

I like that the Ogre’s pants keep the same color scheme as on your Big Hats…interesting way to tie the army together

Gunnerson:

I’ve got more work done on them and am happy with the new results I have gotten from the pigments I just need to get the mix ratios down with brush on varnish. My pc broke so no new updates for a little while.

Yodrin:

Nice work mate !!!

Thank you! I'm using a surface until my pc is back up and running. I just need to get used to this thing now.

Gunnerson:

Now that my computer is working I need to add some new pics. I will try and get on taking some new pics and adding them. Ive got a unit of great weapons pretty much done and another boss. I also have a good start on my Deathshreikers. I think I will be repainting the mortar portion of my DQ mortar to look more like the rockits! Im at work now but I would like to try and add some pics later tonight or tomorrow. When I get home I have some deathshreiker crews that are primed. I plan to base coat them with my air brush and get them attached to a base.

Gunnerson:

Sooo Big update that I promised!!!

Gunnerson:

So ultimately my plan is to have 2 total separate Chaos Dwarf armies, both painted and based differently. One army composed of FW minis and one composed of old metals. In the prior post I added in some FW Bull Centaurs as I don’t at present have my metal ones assembled and pinned. So for the short term Ill be subbing them in. The Deathshreikers need some base work done but are more or less finished. The pics don’t do justice to the minis/paint. They look fairly weathered due to a new trick I learned recently. Coating the painting the rust/corrosion effect, clear coat, hairspray, airbrush black and then use a stiff bristled brush to remove the black from the areas you want to appear corroded/damaged then clear coat again. It worked great. A friend that is pretty into Flames of War told me about this technique as he uses it for painting camo on his tanks.

Its kind of hard to see but my Kahn has been converted slightly. I didn’t like the fit/bond between mount and rider so I had a friend do a slight conversion/modification and he “sculpted” a mongol style saddle. It came out pretty well. I am also looking to try and get someone to set me up with some banners. Ive got carpel tunnel and have a rough time with fine drawing, painting and small pieces on my minis. All these 1 piece chaos dwarfs have been amazing!! I often need to get my wife or the kid that lives with us to glue the tiny pieces for me, or at least hold them due to a lack of sensation in my fingers.

Ill keep playing, painting till I die itll just start getting a little sloppier until we get some of those star trek meds!

Bloodbeard:

The blending on the weapons and the big hats is amazing. Very well painted. Great way to add extra detail through painting.

Will you keep the deathshrieker bases simple or use them to make the deathshriekers different from one another?

Gunnerson:

Thanks! With the Deathshreikers Ill end up making a larger base similar to how I did the dreadquake mortar. The bases will end up with some light scrub type grass on them but not much else.

I am really looking forward to paint some more FW minis but I want to finish the metals first.

Thanks! I actually hauled out the BCs to the garage and began shooting them last night. I than ran into a dilema I thought I had enough "Dark Flesh" to get all 6 of them. I was wrong...So then I busted out my last pot of scorched brown and tried that...It was sooo watered down that it kind of just shaded the dark flesh. Neither of these colors exist anymore. What pray tell is a GW/Vallejo equivilant? Ill need to pick it up on my way home from work tonight and try again....Blork!!!
