[Archive] Starting out, total CD Newbie

AGPO:

Can I go against the flow and say I really like the lava effect? How did you do it? I’ve already got a scheme for lava bases but I’d love to use that one for daemonic ichor (I’m making some special Hellcannon and death rocket/earthshaker templates)

sure! I started off with a basecoat of merchite red, and just blended up to skull white through blood red-blazing orange- firery orange- sunburst yellow- badmoon yellow - skull white. You want to leave the darker colour around the edges, working lighter into the middle.

The bubbles are just balls of greenstuff cut in half (I think I did them a bit big and lost the effect). The lava doesn't look as bad as it does on the photo, so have a go!

AGPO:

Thanks HH, will do! my lava bases haven’t worked too well thus far. I’ll persevere though!

Well, having been uber busy, this thread has been neglected a touch!  I am a man who changes his mind often, and is easily carried away with his current flight of fancy, so…

I decided to go back to big hats.  You will have probably seen my guy in GHV.  I got a respectable 6 votes (which is good considering the calibre of the competition) for this guy:

So, I unashamedly stole the idea from someone on this CDO ages ago of using a cut down chaos warrior.  I cut him down to the right height, bult the head from greenstuff using the skull marauder shoulder pad as a base.  I sculpted triangular mail over the top of the plate armour, greenstuffed the beard and ‘tash and made the hat from greenstuff with an old flat shield on the top.  I wasn’t too happy with the banner logo, and had repainted the whole banner four times before giving up.  Its quite difficult to fill a banner of this shape with a simple motif.  Anyway, I had so much fun making this guy that I now want to make an army of them instead of mini chaos warriors!  The next 5 are in progress, and I am doing a little tutorial to show you how I do them (similar to my other ones).  Mega busy at work at the minute (and building a go kart, accurising my pro-kit Xwing, learning to fly my model spitfire, finishing my tyranids and eldar and tau, repairing a trailer, playing mario kart wii [wich is freakin’ awesome btw] and fitting in study time for my HND in electrical engineering!!) so can’t put a realistic deadline on it, but watch this space…it should be soon!

I am also hoping to try out ishkur’s casting tutorial to see if I can’t get a full unit done (and painted!) this time.

Hashut’s Blessing:

You could always use either this unit or the old units as “Immortals” (use normal rules, just they look different  ). It’ll be good to see a unit of them done. I couldn;t tell at first that it was a shortened Chaos warrior. However, looking at the shoulder pads, I can see it. You can’t see the base model well enough to think of it, which is a good thing. Makes your army a separate entity

Theory_Man:

You should change the title of this thread, your chaos dwarfs are far from newbie standards. It would be cool if you posted the green of your Standard Bearer (if you have one).

I was actually thinking of starting a new blog, but it's kind of good to see the process I'm going through to get where I want. I'm getting better with the green stuff, and this shows when you compare the SB to my earlier stuff, so, I think I'll keep the thread as it is. After all, I was a total newbie when I started it!

I don't have a pic of the green unfortunately, as I was pretty hard pushed to get it finished in time for GH, so I never took any WiPs, But I am doing a step by step tutorial for the 2nd Rank, which I hope to mount on a regiment base so they will rank up a little easier! I'll post them as soon as they are done.

@ HB

I thought about doing that until I placed them side by side, the SBs head without a helmet is bigger than the mini CW with a helmet if you know what I mean, it wouldn't look quite right.

I was worried about him looking too much like the cut down chaos warrior type we have already seen so I made lots of changes (cut the cape back, covered the plate armour etc). I wanted to have a standard bearer I could use in my warriors unit, so went for a bog-standard look. In the end, I think I over did the 'normalising' and he ended up looking pretty un-spectacular.

Hey-ho, there is always GH6!!

Kera foehunter:

i like the sweeet good looking cd ,the banner is cool too!! Red and gold the best cd colors

Hashut’s Blessing:

I think it doesn;t look too normal. It looks a little more realistic, in an abstract way. Which, I like and think some areas of Warhammer could do with more of. (Although, some could do with less of  )

Vasquez:

Wauw :o Those dudes are awsome! I love all the fur… and the preparation “guide” thingy was nice too… always wondered how capes were made from green stuff - there was my answer  The hobgoblin is really cool… I usually think all hobbos are ugly, but I gotta give ya’… that one was really nice :hat off

D*rn… I’m getting an urge to make CDs… Must finish… undeads…!

GRNDL:

I had no idea this guy was a cut down Chaos Warrior. Thats a great conversion job. I think what set it apart for me was the crisp paint job. The colours are well chosen and applied. The details, even when sharing similar values and shades, still stand out and don’t get lost in the overall scheme.

The triangular mail is nicely done too. Its a shame it doesn’t come out very well in the photos. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice it till you pointed it out to us.

furrie:

never tought that it ones whas a chaos warrior, but now poeple have mentioned it, I can see it

Xander:

Hey! Did you ever paint your CD warriors?

Hammerhand:

Hey!  Did you ever paint your CD warriors? :D

Xander
I started painting them, I've got the base coat on a couple, but they're no-where near finished. I get very easily distracted and have put most of my time into 40k and my go-kart. I promise, when I have some leave (and my wife doesn't want to drag me around the country), I will have that tutorial done, including painting!

Sorry guys, I am weak!

Joshmohr:

There Perfect. Welcome to the site! if you have any questions, you can PM me.

Swissdictator:

The standard bearer looks sharp! Very nicely done!

Hammerhand:

OK, as I may have alluded at some point in the distant past:rolleyes:, I am working on 5 Masters for making CD moulds so I can actually get some units finished.  I am about a quarter of the way through the conversions (finished 1, nearly finished 2 more) so I thought I would give you a sneak-peak at what’s to come.  I have taken photo’s at every stage so a tutorial will follow, but what I intend is to have at the end of the tutorial, a rank of warriors and a rank of blunderbusses on a regimental base with a step by step guide including painting.  Obviously, with my work commitments and usual shiny-thing-itis, this may take a while.  So for now, I’ll just show you my wip master.

Yes I’m still with big hats for now!!

Kera foehunter:

Nice !!What a handsome C D !!nice medium hat !!

tjub:

An army of these would look really cool! How many have you done?

at the moment, just the standard beaerer and the one master, I've very nearly finished 3 more of the masters and not so nearly finished the 5th. I'm then going to make moulds out of thes to produce a unit of warriors and a unit of blunderbusses and see where we go from there! Thanks for the +FB

Thanx @ kera, you are still such a sweetie!
