So after the blissful decision of choosing Chaos Dwarves as my new love child, thanks to the works of Thommy H, I find myself in a conundrum.
I love Thommy’s CD Army Book. I think it is a magnificent work, but i am stuck between building a army off of his book, and building an army off of Tamurkhan. I plan on play testing both, and my play group is strictly casual, but I don’t know which book would be better to use as, not only a fledgling CD player, but a Fledgling WHFB player.
The Core troops in Tamurkhan seem very over costed, but everything else seems pretty good.
Thommy’s book offers a multitude of army options and a much better costed core.
Thommy s is free, while the Tamurkhan is 75 dollars, I have both and it depends on how much effort you want to put into the game. The Tamurkhan is a simple army to build and play and forge world is producing the miniatures relativly quickly, while Thommys book has alot more detail ,units and demon machiens you can build/model, both are alot of fun
How do warmachines work in Thommy’s book. I am a tad confused. Doomcannons can be upgraded alot of different ways, but not all the shooting upgrades make sense to me.
And you should use whichever book you prefer! Remember that anything you can field in the Tamurkhan list has a place in my list too though, so you can’t go wrong if you collect a Legion of Azgorh force, then just translate it into my rules if you want some more variety now and then.

I am just a bit confused how customizing Mortal Engines and Doom Cannons works. Could you give me some possible builds for each one?
Like the for one, the doomrocket rule throws me off a bit, sir. x.x

I was going to say this really, Tamurkhan is more a small, expensive, elite army based on a particular faction of the chaos dwarves. Thommy's Book is more like what an official GW released book would be like with plenty more troop choices and if GW did release an official army book in the future I suspect the troop types to be pretty similar.
I supose it also depends on what book your regular opponents will play against, if they're happy with either book then good times!
I really love Thommy’s book. I read all the fluff last night Thommy, was up till 4am reading! My girlfriend wasn’t too happy about that though. Hahaha!
I am going to make a list based on Thommy’s first. And then i will look into Tamurkhan.
Well, Daemonic Upgrades are really just like any other option - they’re the Chaos Dwarfs’ equivalent of Vampire Powers, Ogre Big Names, Bretonnian Virtues, etc. - the only difference is they’re for their war engines and monsters. Long, long ago, each Upgrade had its own points cost and they worked like magic items, and certain units could only have a certain points worth of them. But as the list of units that could get them expanded, it became impossible to balance them like that. So now they’re part of the units’ army list entries, like weapon upgrades or command groups. You just pick them in the way it explains, and refer to page 67 for the rules for each.
A few builds you might like to consider:
Deathshrieker Rocket - 90 points
Mortal Engine with 3 Chaos Dwarf Crew, Arcane Artillery and Death Rockets
Dreadquake Mortar - 145 points
Mortal Engine with 3 Chaos Dwarf Crew, Arcane Artillery, Slave Ogre and Infernal Shells
Magma Cannon - 85 points
Mortal Engine with 3 Chaos Dwarf Crew, Arcane Artillery and Eruption Cannon
K’daai Fireborn - 80 points/model
Hellborn Constructs with Blazing Body, Favour of Hashut and Fuelled by Fire
Iron Daemon - 340 points
Infernal Engine with 3 Hellforge Guard, Ironclad, Mawter and Thunderous Charge, upgraded to an Iron Daemon Engine of Legend
Skullcracker - 355 points
Infernal Engine with 3 Hellforge Guard, Ironclad, Thunderous Charge and Whirling Blades, upgraded to an Iron Daemon Engine of Legend
Hellcannon - 220 points
Doomcannon with Colossal, Ferocious, Ironclad and Warpfire
K’daai Destroyer - 310 points
Infernal Engine with Blazing Body, Favour of Hashut, Ferocious, Fuelled by Fire and Ironclad
Tommy H. A question up your trail, where does the Indy GT rules fit into your rules and and the forge world tamurkhan book… Got a lot of catching up to do. Been gone for 5 yrs… thanx :cheers
The Indy GT book was developed at around the same time as the first version of my book. In fact, I accelerated my work on it back in the day to avoid suggestions that I’d cribbed ideas from it! Mine came out a week or two ahead of it in the end, I think. I continued to develop my book into 8th Edition and ceased work on version 2 just before the release of Tamurkhan, on the basis that it would be surplus to demands. However, when it emerged that the Tamurkhan list was fairly limited in terms of variety of units and possible builds, I felt the need to throw my hat into the ring again.
This newest version (see my sig) is therefore a kind of reaction to Tamurkhan, but it also incorporates a lot of the ideas from that book (such as K’daai) and is not incompatible: as it says in Tamurkhan, the Legion of Azgorh is just one kind of Chaos Dwarf army, and doesn’t necessarily represent the race as a whole. Mine is instead written to be definitive, like a full Armies Book.
I have both books. I think that Thommy’s book is a very beautiful piece of work in it’s own right. It can stand up against ANY GW publication. The Tamurkhan is also a beautiful book and I can’t find many faults with it. The one big thing that Thommy’s book has over the Tamurkhan book (other than the price), is that I can use all my OLD minis, which I absolutly love. I can use things like Black Orcs, Bull Centaurs, all my Hobgbolins, so I am happy that my years of collecting these old minis, has not a waste of time and money. So if I had to pick just one book, it would be Thommy’s book.

I'm pretty sure that if you're looking for any sort of competitive/tournament play, you're going to have to use the Tamurkhan book, considering that's the one officially endorsed by GW. You might also get a lot of flack the first time you play your army with custom rules and you table someone.
I got the LoA rules for $30. $10 for laminated sheets, $5 for a 1/2" binder, and $15 for Office Max to print the LoA rules double sided and in color from the Tamurkhan torrent I found.
Yeah, kind of interesting that you’d take a quasi-moral stance on using fan-written rules while bragging about illegally downloading the official ones…
Anyway, no one’s even talking about playing any competitive games here. That would be a totally pointless discussion.

I have no issue with fan-made rules and I'm happy that you made a book, and I apologize if it looked like I was frowning at fan-made rules. If he's using the army for beer-and-pretzels games, he can use whatever book he wants. There's a lot of positives to your book, but just remember that to some people (especially people you massacre on the board), there might be a certain stigma attached to a fan-made book.
At a lot of the tournaments I've been a part of, your book got banned in favor of the Forgeworld book. I just don't want to see him put a bunch of love and care into an army, get ready for a tournament, and then find out that his army book is banned due to it being fan-made and he has to start over from scratch.
EDIT: If you're not looking to do any tournaments, you should pick whatever book you like more. Sorry for derailing the thread, guys.
