[Archive] The Black Raiders of Uzkulak

Miasma:

Greetings Everyone

Thank you all for dropping by, I am a long time player of WHFB (and also 40K) and for nearly 16 years I have collected Orcs and Goblins and Dwarfs, then in 2009 I decided that I wanted to Collect Vampire Counts so decided to collect those as well, all in all I have roughly 5000 Points of Vampire Counts, 10000 Points of Dwarfs and no idea how many Points of Orcs and Goblins as these seem to multiply when they are in storage and I constantly find Goblins turning up all over the place.

Humble Beginnings - From Balrog to Destroyer

This time however I wanted to do something different, even though I have been in the hobby for some time I have never really tried Sculpting anything nor have I tried OSL painting techniques so I want to be able to rectify both of these in this army blog.

So to start off I will mostly be using Greenstuff and Games Workshop Dwarfs to create my models, I also really like the idea of using the Lord of the Rings Hunter Orcs as my Hobgoblins, and obviously the Balrog Model is an absolute beast.

I also want to start making my own themed Terrain which which I can tie in my army and I currently have an idea in mind for a Ziggerut mount for my K’Daai Destroyer model that pulls in parts from a variety of sources and I can get messed up on the fumes of melting Polystyrene (Yay)

OBJECTIVES:

Improve (gain any) Greenstuff Skills

Improve (make to look decent) OSL

Tie Everything Together with Basing Theme (Fire and Ice!)

Army Background and Fluff.

I decided on Uzkulak as the setting for my Force as to me it gives me a good narrative to fight any of the armies of the (current) Old World. I really like the idea of trying to combine a Lava and Snow base themed army as the area that this force sallies from will be in the depths of “Winter” as befits any foothold by the Frozen Sea!

I will also be linking short stories and other Fluff Bits here as I do tend to write reams of fluff for my armies when not building, converting, painting etc. The first will be linked here after the Scribes Challenge has been revealed (if I am allowed)

This post will highlight the original WIP image as well as the “Finished” article obviously this is a little bare at the moment but hopefully this will change in the coming days as my orders start to arrive (waiting on Green Stuff and More Guitar String)

Battle Reports

Here I will link my Battle Reports as and when they take place, I do currently have some to write up and get on Battle Chronicler so expect some within the next few weeks as I test the army against a variety of lists.

Miasma:

So firstly I will be sorting out the above posts when I have some spare time at works and will look into HTML coding and other things to make this Blog look prettier.

Yesterday my first Ebay Order arrived in the post, I bid on the Balrog Model from Lord of the Rings to use as the base for my K’Daai Destroyer and managed to win the Auction with a bid of £18.00 (slightly above what I wanted to pay but still cheap enough) once I opened the box I noticed something lurking in the shadows between the scrumpled up newspaper

SPARES! Essentially an entire Balrog model minus the Wings and the Head which should make my planned conversion easier, now I need to wait for the Head Part to arrive. So In the mean time I will plan and build the base to mount this upon as I do want this to be a Centre Piece for the army. This also means that once I create a second base I can if I wanted field two K’Daai Destroyers!

I have also had a rummage through my Bits Box and Located Parts for 24 Dwarf Warriors with Great Weapons (with Full Command) and a base for a unit filler of 4 models to build the total unit of 28, I have also made the Movement Tray to accompany this unit (once Characters have Joined) ina  nice 6*5 formation

DAGabriel:

Now let us see it coming alive!

Have some slaves to help you!

Doombeard:

if you are interested in a trade for the balrog with wings i need one. could swap something good for it

BABIS:

great start

This message was automatically appended because it was too short.

Bloodbeard:

Very well organized start of your blog. I like it. Your effort deserves some slaves!

Abecedar:

Definitely a good looking and organised start.

Miasma:

@DAGabriel, thank you for the slaves. The Blog is now live (yay) and will start to see movement shortly (more so when my Greenstuff finally arrives!!)

@Doombeard, I have sent you a PM, thankfully the spares includes everything I want for my conversion so I do not need to cannibalise the winged model and if you can make use of him I am happy to trade. Will work something out via PM

@Babis, thank you. I hope to be able to keep up this standard throughout

@Bloodbeard, thank you sir, and thank you for the slaves

@Abecedar, and thanks to you as well

Well now that my Oscar Winners speech is completed, I wanted to show my idea for the K’Daai Destroyer and his base, firstly I plan to position the model so that it is raising from the pit that I hope to cut/burn into the Polystyrene, I have not yet started the cutting of the Balrog Model but will be marking up the area’s that I need to cut tonight and see how well this idea can work. The below is not mine obviously but rather shows the idea of what I am aiming for.

This is going to take a lot of work and I am more then a little nervous as it means that I am going to have to learn how to pin a model to gain strength and then re sculpt the muscles with greenstuff, so a real trial by fire.

I have also decided that I am going to sculpt some armour plating and rivets on the Balrog Model to fit in with my idea of the K’Daai and the background (daemon encased within mechanical structure) as well as the molten area’s to cover my cutting a repositioning. This is going to be using greenstuff (when it finally arrives) and finally I have decided that I will be using one of the Minotaur Heads which will need slight elongating and resculpting of the neck to fit into the model aesthetics, athough I can hide most of the Head Swap work with Green Stuffed Armour plating and Lava-esque sculpting.

I have also thought about the statues for the Temple Base and have decided that if I can find some for a reasonable price a couple of the Old Bull Centaur Models and some of the Old Plastic Big Hat Models would be a nice nod to the History of the army

gIL^:

Pinning isn’t so hard. I use a gw hand drill and paperclips unbent and made to size.if paperclips are not your thing florist wire bought from any flower shop is also good.

Admiral:

Very good and organized log start! I like very much what is to be seen at the moment. Good luck!

TheHoodedMan:

Lots of good ideas, very promising. :cheers

Fuggit Khan:

Wow, that is quite a start for a blog…nicely thought out. And kudos for including pics from the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

Yodrin:

Greta start on blog, and some very nice ideas!!

Miasma:

@gIL, thanks unfortunately the pinning is going to have to wait as the bits store that I purchased the Minotaur heads from send me two of the left sides so as of yet I still have no head for the Destroyer, this is going to have to be put on the backburner for a little while until I can scrape some more pennies together for other bits and pieces.

@ Admiral, TheHoodedMan, Fuggit Khan & Yodrin thank you all for your praise and motivation hopefully with all your help I can keep this project moving at the pace that I have set here at the start.

Ok so I haven’t completely neglected this over the past week, I have been busy cutting and shaving the beards off my 24 Great Weapon Dwarf Warriors and my spare guitar strings have finally arrived as well as my green stuff. So tonight I should hopefully have a couple of test models one with a Guitar String Beard and one with my first attempts of Greenstuffing.

As an aside as an Orc and Goblin player “shaving” that many Dwarfs was a real delight even though the work was hard in avoiding cutting off the face

Miasma:

Ok so my first few experiences with Green Stuff have not been all that successful, I have re sculpted the beards about 6 times on one model using singular “sausages” of Green Stuff and have also attempted to cut the individual braids out of a lump of Green Stuff, I’m not really happy with the results so have scrapped these early attempts. In other news I have had a great surprise in the form of a Tax Rebate (it seems for the last 7 years I have been overpaying tax as my Tax Code was wrong) so I have a lovely cheque of £400.00 that I will be putting into building my army as let’s face it that is more or less the cost of an army these days.

As a result of this I have purchased a few things from EBay and have also completed a few trades on Barter Town so I expect the following to arrive in the next week or so, as far as I can tell the majority of these models are the 4th edition sculpts:

Lord on Great Taurus

Chaos Dwarf Hero on foot

Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer on foot - missing back banners

2x 20 Great Weapon Chaos Dwarf Warriors with full command (mix of Plastics and Metal)

15 Chaos Dwarf Warriors with blunderbusses

1 Doom Rocket with 3 crew

1 Hobgoblin bolt thrower with 2 crew

6 Chaos Dwarf Bull Centaurs

So this obviously changes things slightly, I was going to convert the majority of the army from Dwarf Models (which I still plan to do) although my focus will switch pretty quickly to painting and base/movement tray making for the army, it also got me thinking that since I have the majority of Models released in 4th edition I may as well aim to collect as much of this army in Metal as possible. Also what can I do with the Hobgoblin Bolt Thrower? Count as Deathshrieker Rocket Launcher?

So new first stage of this army is going to be stripping the paint from these models (as the Paint on the Taurus looks to be about 2-3mm thick) as well as tracking down as many of the 4th edition models as possible, mainly hobgoblins.
