A single pistol can only be used for shooting, but a brace of pistols can be used in combat too. It’s confusing in the rulebook because they also describe the rules for the brace in the generic pistol section, which doesn’t have a proper table for using a single pistol in combat (because you can’t).
I only run my IG with blunderbusses at this point as I have found it to be the most effective option (both in terms of gameplay and total cost since I have to buy less guys!). In multiple games I have wiped out a horde unit of HE White Lions over two turns of shooting (got three then two shots off apiece), Black Orcs and an Empire Halberd block.
Also in regards to the deathmask I have not been taking one just to save points and keep a blunderbuss, but realizing the pistol counting as an AHW makes me think I may have to drop some points to get him :cheers
Hello, new to the forum. Thinking about starting Chaos Dwarfs and love the look/ idea of fireglaives, but everyone seems so negative against them, especially bigger units. This might make no sense but why don’t you start in two ranks to maximize shooting, then flee when they are charged? When they rally you can form a combat block and come around the flank. (If they are deployed in front of something hard and stubborn/ unbreakable)
Say you have a unit of 20. Its deployed 10 wide so the maximum models can shoot. You don’t want it to receive a charge as it won’t be steadfast (and will lose attacks fast), you flee. If it is deployed in front of a combat unit (lets say some GW IG, but it could be whatever you want) it won’t be caught because it will pop to the back of you combat unit. Your opponent then either has a failed charge or is into a block that will smash face or at least hold him. Your FG warriors then rally (Ld10 re-roll) re-forming to 5 wide combat block that can then flank or… whatever. It is something I saw a dwarf player do with crossbows deployed in front of GW horde. Thought it would work even better here with S5 and CD artillery… The blunderbuss looks like it could be very effective but when you take a 30+ model unit one dwellers or purple sun and…

The only thing i'm gonna say is : nicque-ta-mare? It's seriously the user name you choosed? That's a funny name sire :hat off.
If a pistol by itself can be used in close combat, what is the benefit in taking a brace over a single pistol?
With the way it is formatted on pg 91, I think claiming AHW is a little 'beardy'. I wish it was clarrified.
For 2 points I would take AHW every time.

My mate and i got to discussing this. His view was as follows:
It is explicit in the first paragraph that it is an additional hand weapon. The example for the brace of pistols is for clarrification that you cannot use it mounted. Interesting. He makes a good point.

Nope, it's like cornixt said: A single pistol only has a profile for shooting. Yes, the paragraph is misleading, but only a brace of pistols confers the "extra attack" rule, like additional hand weapons do.

Sorry, but this is wrong. I checked it several times.
The paragraph explains two different things: a) one pistol and b) a brace of pistols.
a) You have a pistol which is a ranged weapon. Your melee weapon is still a hand weapon. But your ranged weapon gives you an additional attack for your hand weapon.
b) You have a brace of pistols which is a special weapon for both melee and ranged combat. Since it is a special weapon, it has its own weapon rules profile (where it says, among other things, that it grants an additional attack).
That paragraph is very clear on that.
Edit:
which doesn't have a proper table for using a single pistol in combat (because you can't).
No, it doesn't have a proper table because your weapon is still an ordinary hand weapon (which doesn't require a table) that now gets the additional attack special rule.
Second Edit:
Alternatively, you can explain it this way: it doesn't have a proper weapon profile table because it states that a pistol in melee is simply an additional hand weapon - and the profile table for additional hand weapons is right there!

Baader the Great
So I still feel that a single pistol cannot function as an additional hand weapon, but alas I might have to concede. The paragraph in the Rulebook is at least ambiguous on this matter, but I think the respective paragraph in the Ogre Kingdoms Army Book is pretty clear, where it says:
An Ogre Pistol can be used as both a missile weapon (with the profile below) and in close combat, following the same rules as an additional hand weapon
AND then this is followed by a separate entry the for Brace of Ogre Pistols which reads as
A 'Brace of Ogre Pistols' can be used as a missile weapon with the profile below. In close combat, they follow the same rules as an additional hand weapon.
So here we have two completely separate entries for a single pistol and a brace of pistols, and both state that they function as additional hand weapon. The price range is also comparable to Dwarfs (6pts for a single pistol, 10pts for a brace)
I guess that settles it, a single pistol functions as an additional hand weapon! But then keep in mind that you cannot opt to use hand weapon and shield if you also have a pistol...
