[Archive] US Primaries

The Flying Beaver:

Though I’m not American myself, I have been paying attention to them because of my Political Science class (as well as personal interest). So I ask everyone: Who are you rooting for in the US primaries? Why?

I want John Edwards to win, but failing that, Barack Obama. My reasoning is simple- he’s the only one who’s said anything about poverty. Personally, I see it as a far more pressing issue than ‘family values,’ whether homosexuals are in relationships, etc. I want Mitt (Mittens) Romney to win the Republican nomination so that his Mormonism can cost him the evangelical vote and he’ll subsequently lose.

Kera foehunter:

I see none of these helping  us!!! We need a leader and a healer to fix this country. In  this country the greed monster and the war has destoy us . Untill we get a leader of the people we will  have no change. The net work new ( like fox news) is alway telling us who the bestand smearing everyone that they don’t like …We need to fix heath care!!!And keep are jobs!!!

All these people do a good talk but it ends they do nothing.

i still waiting for the jobs and the health care from last time. We have a 8% unemployment where i live at.do to the loss of good paying jobs.

Iam watching this closely too. I think john Edward would be good but not at this time

Ron Paul  mabe

The fore runner in both partys no way

Willmark:

Ugh IMHO one reason this board has been so “stress free” is because politics are not discussed. Mods please keep a "tight rein"on this. There are three things garaunteed to result in the most vicious of fights. Religion, political discussions and anything relating to Apple Inc. These three are it bar none

With all that being said I’m doubting I can vote for ANY if the democratic contenders, and this is after I voted for Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004. Obama has next to no experience. Hillary? Yeah great idea of planning to give the “poor” $5,000 dollar each for savings accounts no thanks I pay way too many taxes as is. Ron Paul has no shot. Guiliani unfortunately has little chance either. He actually cleaned up NYC in the early 90’s, no small feat if you had ever been there pre-1990. Edwards, nothing more then a ambulance chasing lawyer.

That leaves McCain… I wish he won the nomination in 2000. I would have voted for him. 2008? Don’t know.

So where does that leave me as a voter? Same as the yearly local and state elections: in the voting booth choosing the lesser of two evils, rather then the best canidate.

cornixt:

Hmmm, politics usually leads to arguments. Everyone should be extra careful about what you say on this thread. It will be locked well before it gets out of hand.

I’m not allowed to vote so I don’t have to think about it too badly.

torn:

i think john mcain was the one i seen on tv that i liked.

democrats are all lame, especially hilary clinton. how can you look up to a woman that knew her husband was having an affair and didnt stand up for herself about it?

could be worse could be stuck with gordon brown . . . .

Lord Zarkov:

torn
Aye, Mr Brown's premiership has even made me change my opinion on Scottich Independance from apathic to strongly for! :)

As long as it happens after March 5th of course:D

Kera foehunter:

At least the next person i hope is better than the one we have.

In the words of Neil Young.

Keep on rocking in the free world!!!

cornixt:

ooh, another NY fan!

The sad thing about politics can be summed up by The Who:

“Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”

The Flying Beaver:

Make that a third Neil Young fan.

how can you look up to a woman that knew her husband was having an affair and didnt stand up for herself about it?
I agree that she should have dumped him, but is her private life really your biggest concern when voting?

Hammerhand:

NY - It’s better to burn out than to fade away! I think old George W is a fan too!

At least under Blair everyone thought 'well, he’s a nice bloke but…'

Under brown it’s more like 'but…'

Our (the british) political system is easier though.  If you don’t like Gordon Brown in charge, vote for the Conservatives.  If you don’t want to vote but feel guilty about wasting the right that many people have died to protect, vote Lib Dem, they’ll never get in.  You could also do what most people do these days and not bother.  At the end of the day, all the policies end up being the same, just ‘spun’ in a different way.  They all want to bleed every last drop of money from your wages, cripple you for having a job you need to drive to whilst covertly selling knighthoods and giving their foreign pals a passport.

Or am I just cynical?

minty:

nope hammerhand, you seem just perfect there, good job on the spot

then again, i think polotician (well, the current meaning) means theif, so I may be cynical

wallacer:

but is her private life really your biggest concern when voting?

The Flying Beaver
It's not so much her private life, it's more that it's an indication of just how much she's willing to turn a blind eye to to secure her grip on power.

I wasn't really sure if the poll was intended just for Americans, or whether anyone could vote in it. I decided to vote for John McCain.

Ellimist:

I’m closest to Gravel in terms of my feelings on politics. If I was actually voting, it’d have to be with Clinton or Obama, as they’re the ones in the democrat primaries with an actual chance.

The Flying Beaver:

This thread is for anyone, not just americans. I myself am not american, as stated in the first sentence of the thread.

It’s not so much her private life, it’s more that it’s an indication of just how much she’s willing to turn a blind eye to to secure her grip on power.
Or perhaps they worked out their marital troubles? (Do bear in mind that I dislike Clinton too. I’m playing devil’s advocate.)
If you don’t want to vote but feel guilty about wasting the right that many people have died to protect, vote Lib Dem, they’ll never get in.
They’ll certainly never get in with that attitude! To think that a labour party which had proven itself to be poor rulers by going further right-wing can be bettered by a further-right party? Yeah, okay. Of course, the British Tory leader’s victory will force the Labour party to rebuild and go back to behaving like an actual Labour party should which isn’t a bad thing.
then again, i think polotician (well, the current meaning) means theif, so I may be cynical
Poly - Greek word meaning ‘many’

Tics - A blood sucking insect

I can see why voters show cynicism, however I think it’s unjustified in the end. The fact that people don’t care how bad their rulers are because it’s ‘to be expected’ only lets them continue their behaviour. If people started to care more about government, government would have no choice but to do the same in return.

^Do you vote.

I'm forced to vote and have recently done so but I'm gonna ask those that don't have to vote this question; If you don't have to vote do you really care about all this stuff or do you leave it up to others?

My own dad has very striking political views but he would never vote if he didn't have to. I like the compulsory voting, when elections come they make policies that the majority sections of the whole public want, which is usually good stuff, and feel compelled to at least come good with all the main promises (you can't expect them all they are after all politicians). On the other and if you didn't have to vote then polling wouldn't be a hassle. I still prefer everyone voting at least then everyone knows that the guy in charge was what must have seemed to be the best of the worst to the whole country.

Also having two really good democrat hopefuls running at once was a bad move it's like who do you want in the White House first a black man or a woman? pretty hard question. They should have figured out who the majority wanted and stuck with that. (Yes I realise the repubs can get in, they just scare me given the track record with that war business). But you guys will do what you want to do and it probably won't make sense to me coz I'm not there and I don't know the issues. (though I still don't really know how bush got in a second time with all those people still angry over the whole Florida thing, I?Tm guessing dodgy opponent?)

Willmark:

I could care less whether the canidate is a woman or black. What I care about is an effective leader, no BS, and isnt going to send my taxes through the roof. Anyone is an improvement over Bush. Hillary on the other hand will be just as bad, simply in a different manner.

For those wondering I’m an independent. I’ve voted for Democrats and Republicans over the years. This time I’m wondering  just how I can vote for the dems for president this time around.

Kera foehunter:

Well i vote !! But just like the last to times the mess with the ballot boxes . So i have no faith in that.!! they showed how they could be rigged … We should get ride of the electoral collage. and let the people decide!!  I would like to see a Demercrate before a Republican .

But they are like the Chaos Dragon two Diffrent Head to the same monster

I would change placess with any of you!!!  So you can here this non stop B.S.

Till november .   IT truly  STINKS!!! i wish we could get better coverage… like All your goverment give to are Canadates!!!

The Flying Beaver:

Do you vote.
There hasn't been an election since I reached the legal voting age, but I fully intend to vote.

Willmark:

My contention is this: If a person doen’t vote they have no right to complain.

Not that I’m against people not voting, I’d rather they didn’t, it makes my vote all the more valuable.

The Flying Beaver:

I don't think that voting should be mandatory, but anyone who doesn't want to vote will have to explain to a WWII veteran why they're not voting.
