[Archive] What impact will Rick Priestley's departure have on CD?

wallacer:

Well, since Rick Priestley has left GW/Warhammer Forge… what impact will this have on CDs in Warhammer Forge and GW more generally?

Anyone care to speculate?

Personally I think it’s weird that he would depart just as he has begun to get the Warhammer Forge ball rolling.

nitroglysarine:

looks like alot of the work has been done, have they simply used his skills and dumped him before the profits??

-wonder if he is/was a shareholder in GW or FW??

Grimstonefire:

Forgeworld don’t have shareholders afaik.  No doubt he has a substantial pot of shares.

From a writing side I’m sure the warhammer forge team must be affected, as they will have to find someone else to write all the books now.  They may have shared anyway.

Rick was central in providing (albeit limited) support to the specialist games and warhammer ancient battles. So no doubt that will stop.

mattbird:

from posts by “people in the know”, the FW Fantasy stuff seems to be either delayed at least a year, or on hold now.

no way!
they can't do this to me!
they can't do this to us!
i can't wait another year!
impossible! :mad

nitroglysarine:

My sentiments exactly!

mattbird:

Yeah, the whole handling of Forgeworld is a mess. Don’t even talk about what they did to Warhammer Ancients!

Ishkur Cinderhat:

Unless we get told if he was made to leave or left on his own wish to pursue new goals in his life, I don’t think it’s fair to blame GW right away guys.

Why, was he the main force behind Warhammer Forge?

Grimstonefire:

I may have a source or two to tell me random things, but I have not heard anything about the WF products being delayed. The exact opposite in fact, they want to recoup the initial expense ASAP.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Well, they can recoup with those CD models from me!

Baggronor:

Jesus. They make me look organised.

Pretty much. At the very least he was championing CDs.

I doubt it, they know a good cash-cow when they see one and he was one of their best-known staff; I can’t see how getting shot of him would benefit them.

So his leaving was actually a surprise then? Not something that was already on the cards?

Grimstonefire:

From what I read on warseer somewhere he basically was asked to justify his existence… so to speak… earlier this year. So it was on the cards for a while. That sounds a bit harsh the way I phrased that, but it seems redundancy was not unexpected.

They’ve got rid of quite a few people recently, including Phil Dunn (eavy metal), Ted Williams (some middle manager guy) and a few others. Not to mention Alessio’s boots have not been filled yet afaik.

Baggronor:

Are you effing kidding me. Seriously? Justify his existence? He's Rick Priestley. He wrote the first Warhammer for christ's sake. 'They' wouldn't have their jobs without him. Sigh, this kind of thing reeeeeally pisses me off.

Obsidian:

Probably has a lot to do with GW going from being a group of friends to a professional company years ago.

This annoys me too, but I thought I read that he left, rather than he ws fired. But then, there are a *lot* of rumours on the internet, so I'm probably wrong.

vulcanologist:

That’s very very sad news. GW has exorcised it’s own soul IMO.

dncswlf:

Anyone consider he may just want to retire… he has been in the business for 30-ish years afterall

zobo1942:

I wonder if some enterprising wargaming blogger could arrange an interview with him to get some real information…

With all of his experience, and decades of industry contacts, I bet he could create a tabletop gaming company which would be exactly what gamers are looking to support. Even if he does something else (ie. video games, etc…), I’d be REALLY interested in knowing what his next move is!

Grimstonefire:

I was reading on warhammer.org that Rick seems to be doing some work for Warlord Games at the moment on his warmaster inspired Black Powder series.

Considering Stallard and Priestley worked together for GW back at the start it was obvious I guess where he would go.
