[Archive] What really annoys me about GW

Godbob and his jolly rogers:

I doubt it as GW said that they are getting rid of hats:(

Kera foehunter:

i think they will up date the hats as blunderbusses!!! Nothing can beat the coolness

of big hats and big guns

GRNDL:

@Godbob and Willmark
You are missing my point. There is a large number of devoted Hat lovers, so as soon as a new army book appears with new models, I’m sure there will be lot of Hat conversions.  Just because they’ll probably be spikier, more marauder like, more Chaosy, doesn’t mean that a CD won’t still have an appreciation for a good, tall hat!  It really has nothing to do with GW stance on them, just like it is now. Or are you going to tell me that droves of Hat lovers will just suffer the new look, without doing any mods on them?

I guess I see them falling into the same sort of niche as “pre-Heresy” marine armies, Adeptus Mechanicus, or other themed, non-standard armies. After all, that’s where a lot of the appreciation of the hobby aspect comes from, IMO.

I still like to think that GW won’t just be sticking to the mask theme and making all CD models like short Chaos models - its just not in GW’s graphic design aesthetic, IMO.  They will have some schtick that makes them visually separate from most of what we’ve seen before.  Let’s face it, the Hellcannon crew is all we’ve seen of a possible “update” for the CDs from GW, but they are lightly armoured, “worker/engineers” and probably not a good example of what an entire army could be.  Will masks and helms be enough to seperate them from all the other chaos models? I guess that might depend on the design of the masks/helms themselves, we’ll have to wait and see.

Also, what will become of the Golden HAT when a new army book sans HATS is released? Hmmm, only the fates know…

Godbob and his jolly rogers:

GRNDL that just what I heard but I wish when they do come out that there will be an option for hats/masks/helms

Oh, I'm sure you're correct - that the GW official CDs won't have many (if any) hats. Optional parts for leaders/champs/lords etc, would be cool, for sure, but statistically, I'd put my money on no official hats from GW. I'm speaking strictly about the amateur/enthusiast angle, i.e., the hat lovers amongst the CD community.

Kera foehunter:

Well I’m kinda wanting to see what Gw would come out with .

Look at the great figures there putting out for the lizard army

Hammerhand:

Well, what annoys me about GW is that I just can’t be annoyed with them. Like that girlfriend you know is bad for you but you just keep going back because no-one makes the beast with two backs better!!!

Seriously, I just spent 3 and a half hours cleaning up and filing 5 howling banshees because there was such a shocking amount of flash and stepped mould-lines due to misaligned moulds, I’ve practicaly had to re-sculpt the detail. It’s not as if they are cheap! Now that annoys me. But, they are beautiful models!

But to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised to the point of colapse that GW actually passed on the VAT cut to us, I was almost 280% sure that GW would be rubbing their hands together mumbling “free money from the government ha ha ha”.

I hate the way some of the armies and games are supported, but love the way they support everything else. So to put a positive spin on this thread, I’m going to write 7 things that annoy me about GW followed by 7 things that make me smile, in rank order.

7 things that annoy me about GW

1. The price of the damn things!

2. Re-releasing things just to make money.

3. Paying £35 to queue for a day in september…(in the UK)

4. Getting me so addicted.

5. Not supporting everything, no matter how much money it doesn’t make (oh yeah baby, that was a double neg)

6. The way staff jump on you as soon as you walk in the shop (one guy asked me if I was buying something for my kids - ouch)

7. The endless cycle of WD improving then deteriorating then improving then deteriorating. when its good- stick with it OK!!

7 things that GW make me smile about

1. It’s just sooo cool (or uncool WM ;-P).

2. A lot of the miniatures are simply stunning.

3. This forum is technically spawn of GW, and I love it!

4. The background is awesome, for everything.

5. They brought CDs into my life.

6. The fan base! most of us are really good people.

7. When WD is good, it is very very good.

Now come on guys, stop arguing and post your 7 and 7!! happy new year to all!

Godbob and his jolly rogers:

8.The game is not half bad

Actually I'm not. I think GW has the only real details behind why Chaos Dwarfs failed, Thommy and I discussed this at length. He rightly pointed out it could be any number of things. I also believe design aesthetics or look and feel of the models if you will were are least part of it.

With that said, again, I have no issue with how anyone chooses to make their army, whether modern, or retro. I will reiterate I will be surprised if they are hatted thou..

al-hashut:

I have no quarms with any style, after all it’s not a very polar society. It has many factions, wizards, intrigue at every level of CD society, even a lowly warlord could pretty much dictate what his men would wear. If a slave driver wants his warriors to wear spikey too-toos, then he’s entitled to it and they’ll probably go along with it…besides the darklands are dark, fashion isn’t really an issue

Following Hammerhand’s lead:

Yin/Bad

1. The pre-pubescent reek of body odour in any GW store on a saturday

2. Making certain previous, expensive (even for then) all metal regiments redundant cries over 40 gobbo clubbers and netters

3. How WAAAAGH!! seems to be yelled by staff regardless of gametype/races involved.

4. Excusing their price increases on factors such high fuel etc, but not reversing it when fuel prices go down for example.

5. Lack of proof reading for seemingly every codex/armybook, followed by late erratas.

6. Flogging the LOTR pony until the dust could make commemorative bone china Peter Jackson plates.

7. Getting rid of bleached bone paint.

Yang/Good

1. I have yet to become more engrossed in the fluff of any other story, including Star Wars (mainly due to I, II and III however…mostly down to Jar Jar Binks) and even Discworld.

2. The quality of the miniatures (bar some faux pas’s) just gets better and better.

3. This forum is technically spawn of GW, and I love it!

Hashut’s Blessing:

ForlornHope, it’s all settled, it;s not a problem, just wished to nip it in the bud

If Sojourn stops by this thread, my apologies to her for telling the “children” of the website off :stuck_out_tongue:

As for my 7 and 7:

7 Hates:

1. The kids that try to tell me about the game when I cinched a job there, (because I impressed the staff with my spread of knowledge in all systems, my conversions BLEW them away and I helped whilst I was in there and waiting) but didn’t get it because of university. (Always in a REALLY annoying voice and persistently and usually about my own units. Urgh :P)

2. Prices.

3. White Dwarfs returning decline.

4. Loss of some paints.

5. It’s power of bully magnification (draws them to collectors).

6. Inability to use correct grammar and spelling (this post is hypocritical of that, I know and apologise).

7. It keeps giving us reasons to hate it, with moronic decisions or horrid sculpts or price bumps.

7 likes:

1. THE GAME!

2. YOU GUYS!

3. THE WEBSITE!

4. The lore.

5. The models.

6. The allowance for me to convert (not sculpt as I suck at it lol).

7. Let’s me pretend I’m good at something

Servius:

let me see my list is as following

Cons:

7: Rubbish about keeping their Release Schedule “Secret” - Sure we get a heads up but it would be nice to see what is down the pike for sure… Also gives the customer some oversight (i.e. we know when it should come up so it helps them keep deadlines.)

6: Pricing Models based on their rules and how good they are in the game vs pricing them based on Labor, Materials, Shipping, and an ethical mark up.

5: Release of Falsely Advertised materials. Take Foundation Paints… They are based on a House Paint formula. And the Higher Quality Paints… which are no better quality than cheap walmart paint.

4: Sales personal at both Bunkers and direct being completely useless when it comes to informing customers about products. Its like they are not trained in their products and are simply expected to play as they get a good discount.

3: Disregard for customer suggestion and recommendations… If you make a suggestion to GW they usual give you a politely phrase “Screw Off” letter in return. I have suggested many things to Mongoose Publishing over the years and found their staff to be very accepting of any suggestions and usually take great pains to make those suggestions happen (within reason)

2: Raising of the cost of Products which shouldn’t be raised… Take Plastics… Its an Oil based product… ok… so when oil was nearing the $3.50 USD price per barrel they raised their prices… ok cool… its now below $2.00 USD per barrel… So why exactly is their plastic price still so high??

1: Idiotic Crew behind the scenes when it comes to rules as of late… The last 5 fantasy books released didn’t seems to get much in the way of playtesting and 2 were so poorly written that you could drive a tank through the holes in them blindfolded without hitting an edge.

The new Development team needs to take a look at what has been done in the past couple years and emulate it. I remember when a book coming out was something to look forward to… I almost cringe now. They also are so lazy they can’t even release their own Errata… they simply endorse 2 Player sites which are horribly bias.

Neutrals…

3: Quality of Models and Printed books is good… but then this is more of a neutral as in many ways it has become stagnate in the way of models… (all seems to be in the realist style first seen in Bretonnians) as far as books Quality has dropped greatly… Firstly Color sections… It seems that when I look at a book like Ogres or Bretonnians I am faced by beautiful books… then seeing the most recent its like they just grayscale everything to save them more money and increasing their Margin.

2: Apocalypse: While sold as a way to get collectors to use all their models… it was really just a way to sell more expensive kits with very little use in the regular game. don’t get me wrong I love Apocalypse games… But its the same as the Iraq War… I was told we were going because of WMDs… But we removed a horrible Dictator… I just wish we were told we were going there for that, I probably would have supported it more infact.

1: Revival of the GT circuit in the USA. Im glad to see it back and prospering, as one day when I have the time and money I would love to start traveling again. But I find the competitive gamer (power gamer) has taken over from the reign of the gentleman gamer. Sure you get challenged… Take this Example… I had Dinner every night for 3 nights back in 01’ with people I played either in Tournament or Open Gaming. In 07’ I had dinner one night with the players from my gaming group… No one else… Due mainly to the fact that a good percentage of the players were very good but were not people you ask to come to dinner as friends. This makes me sad to see… but alot of people seem to like it so whatever.

Cons.

3: The Game itself. Its a great system it has evolved well over the year and is nearly perfect. I think I may continue playing 7th edition hammer far into the future as I think they got it spot on this time and really don’t need a 8th edition

2: Model Lines. While expensive they are still quality miniatures and many leave you with many conversion options…

1: The fact that the system is simple enough for the common player to develop their own rules (while GW is the first to discourage this practice). It is nice to take old out of print stuff and do some price updates and minor revisions to make something playable again.

my Dime.

As many can see… I have become a “hater” of GW… This is probably not due to them as much as my local store… When I started playing it was fun… over the year playing at my local it seemed to be more like I was playing simply to appease the people and validate my parking. I found that gaming at my house with a select group is much more relaxing and rewarding. It also lets us do things like house rules which our local is very against.

al-hashut
THEY WHAT?! I have three tubs I scored a while back off a friend, but with no replacements buyable...

Anywho:

Cons:
1. The staff eyeing you the whole time to make sure you aren't there to steal anything, since they're too cheap to I dunno, maybe pay for sensors/cameras?
2. The staff offering assistance/advice when you're just looking. My fun in this game is trial and error, learning and improving myself, not having some stranger tell me my purchase isn't as good as the other one next to it that costs about double.
3. Being unable to immerse myself in the store. Most other hobby stores I go to resemble "Dungeons" of sorts, where you can gaze into the merchandise and have a guy behind the counter somewhat also immersed in something else that they are more than happy to discuss with you and/or play you at etc (where GWs are generally glass front windows, opening out into a mall).
4. Children. I know I was one once too, but I wasn't the type to take up the hobby as a fad, convince my family to buy everything for me, or believe that more points for something makes it the best (i.e. Land Raiders aren't necessarily what will win you the game without dispute).
5. Ranks being 5 not 4 for bonus. Was it ever 4? Have I not known the rules properly? Everyone I play counts ranks of four as well...
6. Not enough plastic kits.
7. Cost.

Pros:
1. Chainswords.
2. GW designing armies that not everyone 'needs' to have (It helps make a game fun when it's not always the same opponent. Kinda why I don't play 40k so much now...).
3. Easy to learn (for some). Stick with basic rules for the first games mostly...
4. Playing anyone on a level field. TCGs are somewhat unbalanced, this game has point limits. Huzzah.
5. Mordheim.
6. Warhammer Fantasy forum goers. Not always the 40k ones...
7. Always having something to do the few times I get to hang out with my brother. If only for that I'd play the game.
