After monkeying around with my WIP K’aa-dai (sp?) for far too long, growing bored and frustrated I decided what the Hell, why not work on something I really wanted to. So with that said I decided to dust off my ideas for a Chaos Dwarf Zeppelin, but couldn’t find my drawings so I started to wing it. I originally thought about a CD zeppelin in 2009 and even alluded to it on one podcast, but now I’m finally getting around to doing it.
The ultimate idea is to have pipes running around on it and lots of chains. I haven’t decided with the cells/gas areas will be corrugated metal or if it will be cloth looking that I might paint flesh colored to simulate the Dawi Zharr using flesh of victims sewn together… still a ways off before I need consider that. The girders will be painted to simulate metal which should be easy, picking up a bunch more plasticard. I also have a ton of small nails to simulate rivets which I’ve use on an unreleased project.
I’m tentatively using a dwarf copter for the propellers of the engine, but have not fully committed to that. I think the gondola will be somewhat open for the CDs to fire weapons from.
Note, this is not a blimp, blimps don’t have rigid frames, this is going to be a zeppelin.

This is the internal frame as it were of which on the plasticard is (probably going to be visible) meaning I won’t have to paint the balsa wood. Its eventually going to have some big directional fins on it as well for steering. Maybe even some bomb racks and and couple of cannon type weapons?
I included a hobbo for size reference. Its about 13.5 inches long… Yes its going to be big. If I ever used it in games I’d probably use Thommy’s rules for war machines, but this is more of a fun type of project.

Like I said I’ll have to see where this goes, but the good news is I’m actually working on something chaos dwarf related after being in a lull for quite a while. I should also add the wire and the block of wood are not a final stand for it just something to use while I work on it.
Welcome back! And with such a project! It is too early to actually post a comment, but it is nice to see you back on CDs:)! You were role playing a lot during the last year right? What lured you back to Warhammer?
Love the ideas on cannons, can imagine raining death from above, I would suggest a dragon head flame thrower at the front but doesnt seem that practical on a zepplin
I’ve always had an itch to make one and an underground borer but there is so many other projects to do.
keep your inspiration coming for us.
Please don’t make it as ugly as this one (see attachment). A centenary celebratory balloon that god knows how much money our government wasted coming up with

I've been a war hammer lull for a number of reasons, probably the biggest was the building of my house last year and installing the lawn. Last year where I live it didn't rain for 2 1/2 months, that was fun...
Wooohoooo, this looks like fun.

Actually I think flame cannons can work. Chaos Dwarfs' wouldn't use something as predestrian as hydrogen for a lift gas, it's probably trapped daemonic creatures or some such.

I am soooooooo jealous! I have been looking for a decent scale model kit to mess about with and turn into a destroyer… But I never thought about making my own! Will follow your blog avidly - make sure to take (and post) plenty of pictures!!!
WOW what a cool idea - and the frame already looks like this will be a great new project. Really looking forward to witnessing the development of this thing.
BTW your workspace really scares me. So much bitz and WIP stuff lying around!
Would it not have been easier to stick together foam and carve/sand it? Use that as a base and put some filler on, then sand that flat with very fine sandpaper?
A massive undertaking, respect.
If I’d made something that big I’d be tempted to turn it into a land ship of some kind. Like the land crawler thing on star wars.
Wow, quite a response and I’ve only posted two pics! That’s guys.

Well. I don’t have a foam cutter which is probably what would be needed to truly carve it well. Plus I’m not sure I can/ could carve and sand it well enough to my liking. Added benefit of I’m not rushing to finish this so I can be more precise then I might otherwise be.
So with that said I opted for making a rigid frame for it. I have tons of resources online to chose from for Zeppelins so a map or roadmap isn’t really needed.
Didn’t get much done last night, but gathered more materials I think Saturday night will be the next night I work on the frame.

Ishkur Cinderhat
Heh I should clean it up a bit… but its not like it’s as bad as Ghrask Draghs drawer of awesome unfinished stuff… Just saying all kidding aside there is a lot of stuff on the table
So I had to backtrack a bunch tonight as the crossbeam going over the main support strut caused a major problem and out of alignment of the rest of the zeppelin.
In all its in good shape and the joints are all sanded and very close to being squared up. The best part is the frame is most likely going to be hidden so I dont need to worry too much about how it looks, but rather how strong it is.
Next up will be the cross-members off of each of the four main struts. Sounds confusing? You’ll see as I construct those parts on the next update.
I also cleaned up the workbench so Ishkur won’t scared anymore!
So far I still don’t have to be majorly precise as all that is visible in this pics will never be seen once the zeppelin is “buttoned up”. Still its coming out pretty dead on. What I’m working on now is the frame that will support the whole and the outer plasticard.
Of immense help has been this picture of the USS Shenandoah from the 1920s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_Shenandoah_Bau.jpg While not following it per say it does provide a good reference for the interior stricture.
Next up is repeating the struts on the underside of the front of the zeppelin.
Lastly I’ve mocked up some direction rudders and “wings” to make it look more fantasy-esque.
