Chaos Dwarfs of the Underway

Finally starting my chaos dwarfs underway project. I’ve been in the hobby since 2007 and have noticed over the years that there has been a lack of lore regarding the chaos dwarfs and the underway. The archives on this site have been fantastic as I’ve not seen many of these projects since there original releases either on the old site or back on warseer well over 15 years now. I had been hoping to start a Chaos dwarf project back then after seeing the variety of sculpting, and kitbashing available with the battle for skull pass dwarfs. At the time I was pre occupied with other projects, but had the idea of what I’d like to build. Had picked up some models back during the Throne of Chaos, though they’ve been sitting in my pile of shame since. With the release of the old world I figured I’d put something together, and had been playing around with the idea of a dwarf expeditionary force or chaos dwarfs. I’ve been unable to choose between the two and have decided to build a chaos dwarf expeditionary force as a result. I currently have about 1000 points and will be working my way up to 2 or 3000 points.

Characters [235 pts]

Daemonsmith Sorcerer [95 pts]: Hand Weapon, Heavy Armour, Darkforged Weapon, Wizard Level 1, Daemonology

Core [488 pts]

Infernal Guard [244 pts]:
• 14x Infernal Guard [17 pts]: Hand Weapon, Hailshot Blunderbusses, Heavy Armour, Shield
• 1x Deathmask [6 pts]
Infernal Guard [244 pts]:
• 14x Infernal Guard [17 pts]: Hand Weapon, Hailshot Blunderbusses, Heavy Armour, Shield
• 1x Deathmask [6 pts]

Special [275 pts]

Iron Daemon [275 pts]: Steam Cannonade, 3x Chaos Dwarf Crew (Hand Weapon)

Expecting to add another Iron Daemon, some mortars, as well as some Ironsworn with pickaxes as great weapons sometime in the future. Here’s what I have so far..

The blunderbusses are fairly simple conversion though a little difficult to justify if you prefer fireglaives

Finally the Iron Daemon is a bit of a nod to the old dwarf juggernaut.

Still have to add shields to the infernal guard, but well on the way now. Any thoughts or suggestions? I’d also greatly appreciate any lore you may know of regarding the chaos dwarfs and the underway as I haven’t found much thus far.

Thanks  I’m hoping finish a 2000 point list by the end of the month for tournament in May. Also working on a bit lore for the warband being in the border princes.

The Rune Readers:

Once powerful priests of Hashut, these two Sorcerer-Prophets were cast out after abandoning their god. They rejected Hashut’s dominion upon discovering a dark truth and sought freedom from the restrictive dogma of the Dark Lands. In their exile, they formed a band of loyal followers, disgraced warriors, sorcerers, engineers, and merchants, who also turned their backs on Chaos Dwarf traditions. Unlike the rest of their kin, who cling to their tall hats and reverence for Hashut, these outcasts wear masks as a symbol of their defiance and honor.

The Outcast Warband:

The followers of the two Rune Readers are a diverse and rebellious group, united by loyalty to their leaders. Their culture blends a mercenary ethos with that of exiles, operating as traders, mercenaries, and smugglers in the Underway.

Living in the Underway and Caravaning the border princes:

Having abandoned the Dark Lands, the band has found a new home in the dangerous depths of the Underway, a labyrinth beneath the world’s edge mountains. There, they carve out an existence by providing goods, weapons, and services to those on the fringes of the known world. Life in the Underway is perilous, as Skaven warbands and other creatures lurk in the dark. Additionally, the region is filled with rival factions, mercenaries, cults, pirates, and the undead, all vying for power and resources. The Underway is a place where old powers and ancient ruins still hold sway. The sorcerer-prophets have learned to navigate the abandoned leylines that run beneath the mountains, though some of their stronger rituals may invoke powers that even they cannot control.

Here’s how I built the Iron Daemons

Parts 1 is the tank from a Malcador Infernus

Part 2 is from a Imperial Heavy Mortar, split and reattached

Final results with some extra bits

Scale for size reference

These are all fantastic!! Did you have to do much modification to the legs of the IG model to mount him to the lizard?

Thank you  The conversion was simple enough, it all fit rather well for scale. I’m not the best at sculpting, so it was mostly a little sanding and some green stuff to help with stability. Still have some cleaning up to do on the model though before I get to painting it
