EvilFuzzyDoom in "Clear that backlog!" [BATG 2022]

I know @Reaver - the pile grows but I’m still digging!

There’s been a Federal election going on in Australia recently, so as someone who’s very politically-engaged I’ve been VERY STRESSED for the last week or so.

However, in the afternoon of polling day I calmed myself down by finishing off this Imperial Guard command squad:

The Officer was painted previously, that’s 4 painted models off the pile.

Here is what’s next on the production line:

Lots of cleaning, basing and undercoating to do there, hopefully I’ll get a bunch done and be in the negatives by June.

The next part of the Kadim/K’Daai conversions arrived:

Just five Brimstone Horrors. Still have to think about legs…

I’m not really sure what this chap is, but he’s painted:

I’ve put him down as an Astra Militarum Conscript for now, but he might end up as a regular guardsman, part of a Kill Team, or doing duty as a Freeguild Handgunner.

I’ve always loved the Flagellant models and wanted to do something with them, I just don’t like the way they look with Cadian arms, so I wanted to test out Skitarii arms on one. Everything came from my bitz box, so he’s a -1 without a corresponding purchase.

Also, I undercoated the Ogors that are so-far assembled, and the Bull Centaurs:

That leaves things standing thusly:

I’m working on my Fellwater Troggoths today but they’re proving a little tricky, so I decided to take a break and paint up the two Khorne Berzerker Champions I assembled a while back.

I needed to paint the new parts to match the existing paint - I didn’t think it would be easy, but it turns out that if you use layer paints over a black undercoat you get terrible coverage no matter how hard you try! Although I quite like the effect I’ve managed on their faces. It’s just layering for the most part but I added a dot of Gor-Grunta Fur contrast paint in the eyes and it gives them a lovely “glazed and insane” look, despite the fact that I don’t paint eyes.

Just for fun I freehanded their unit markings to see if I’ve still got it:

I’ve not tried the World Eaters logo before, I quite like it!

That’s two more off the pile:

I’m still working on Fellwater Troggoths, but I got distracted again and knocked out a test Ogor.

Zenithal prime, carroburg crimson over everything, zenithal drybrush of light grey then bone, then contrast paints on everything. Drybrush to add definition to the flesh, then do the metals. Short and sweet. Very enjoyable painting experience and I look forward to painting more.

Since I enjoyed painting the Ogor so much, I felt compelled to give him some friends:

(apparently I fail photography today)

I don’t know why, but the skin gave me a lot of problems - getting the tone right, keeping enough of the red undershading, and not having them come out pale. I’m really not sure what happened, but ultimately these are just the first unit so close enough is good enough.

Yesterday, I also received a package containing three Soulsnare Shackles (my previous set broke in a million pieces, sadly). I’ll count them even though they’re a replacement:

I took some time out to undercoat them after I took this picture, thinking I’d paint them really quickly, but the undercoat was problematic and refused to dry quickly.

So, that’s a net BATG gain of only 2, but quite a lot of Effort completed:

Aaaand I’ve painted up the Soulsnare Shackles:

I did these very quick and dirty: brown undercoat, dark and then light silver drybrushes, followed by patchy attacks of black and brown washes.

Just enough to get them off the workbench.

It’s been a hard couple of weeks for motivation, so I’ve put the Troggoths away and just picked up something primed to paint. Result: painted Spirit Torment!

Also I put together and undercoated the rest of my Ogors, since I think I’m looking forward to getting them painted.

It doesn’t show up in the picture, but I had to do some conversion work on the Ogor Slaughtermaster because the chains were missing from the secondhand model I bought.

I’m not going to count these, because they weren’t really in the pile and because they’re a test, but I painted a banged-up classic HeroQuest elf and skeleton:

I’m considering painting up my relaunch HeroQuest box using monochrome schemes, taking some inspiration from Ninj0n’s latest video.

I won’t follow his scheme exactly, but the idea of using contrast and zenithal priming to get some depth and interest on the new HeroQuest modes is appealing - I really think the plastic that Hasbro has chosen for the models in the new box doesn’t lend itself well to fully painting them, but inreally was looking forward to doing something with them.

Not sure, will think more on it.

Anyway, there they are.

While waiting for washes to dry on some Ogors (not quite finished yet), I painted some Nighthaunt Chainrasps:

Just something productive to do to make sure I didn’t get distracted from painting!

And here are the Ogor Ironguts I was painting contemporaneously with the Chainrasps:

They were a joy to paint and a pain to photograph! I’ll definitely be getting more of them soon.

I used a zenithal prime and lots of contrast paint & drybrushing to blast through the non-metallics, and then spent a few hours on the metals, trying to get a rusty, unloved effect. There’s verdigris on the bronze, but I’m not sure it survived the washes over the top. Oh well. They still look roughly how I planned them!

That brings me over 700 “effort” painted (total, not this year!) and very close to 500 painted models in my collection, which is pretty sweet!

And I’m creeping up on hitting the balance point for BATG, which is pretty good considering that HeroQuest happened!

I’ll do a mid-year reflection once we hit end of June. Maybe I can paint something else in the next three days…

So many cool ogres stampeding around the forum these days. So awesome, must resist!

They have aged SO WELL. I used a box of Gluttons to make Ogryns for my guard back in the '00s and I was working with Mournfangs to make my Bull Centaurs and I just thought “These kits are such a joy to work with. I should put together a small collection before GW updates them into overcomplicated monopose kits with too much detail that somehow have no character.”

Why though?

Tonight I primed some Gloomspite Gitz in the hope of getting them painted (and so, hit a negative score) by the halfway mark:

  • 25 shootaz (including nets)
  • Fungoid Cave-Shaman
  • Madcap Shaman (Oddgit from the ‘90s)
  • Moonclan Warboss with Giant Cave Squig (AKA Skarsnik and Gobbla)

I’m hoping to get the Shootaz all painted so as to hit -5, but either way I’ll be doing some group photos to celebrate the midway point tomorrow!

No changes to scores, so won’t update them this time.

@MichaelX makes a good point, @Reaver !

UPDATE: I did not get there…

I got 5 shootaz done (sans bases, so they don’t count), and the other 20 got basecoated.

So, +20 at the halfway mark. Sneaking up on that break-even point, though. Soon, negatives, soon…

I just have to resist buying more models for a bit longer.

Well, in the interests of getting more stuff painted I have postponed the halfway report for a bit.

Over the weekend I’ve managed to just finish 20 Moonclan Grot Shootaz!

I still have 3 Netters and a couple of spare archers left to go before this unit is finished, but that brings me to NET ZERO! We’re halfway there, and we’re back where we started!

Snuck in a quick light box session before bed:

But, uh… I ordered some more Ogors while shopping for the new Contrast paints. I can’t rest yet. The hope is now to stay in negatives for the rest of the year.

We’ll see how that goes!

Scores with 20 one-effort models done and a Shame Golf bonus point for getting a unit of 5+ models done:

(Also this brings me over 500 painted models in my collection - pretty happy with that!)

The Horus Heresy release has given me an itch. I keep looking at Age of Darkness box splits and thinking “a couple of squads won’t hurt”.

This guy came from my bitz box. He’s one of the first models I ever bought, back in ‘97. I was vaguely saving him for a comparison exercise, shoot him side by side with one of those first models I painted with Testor’s enamels. But that first model was brown, and I am… not really keen on that.

I haven’t painted a loyalist space marine in something like fifteen, twenty years. And yet here I am, scritchy scratchy.

Here’s hoping the itch is taken care of until I can get my BATG score a bit lower (ignoring that I’ve already painted more models in six months than I did all of last year).

I finished off the Netters for the shootaz unit from the other day, so I figured I’d take a proper lightbox shot of the whole unit together:

I put together two more Grots from the old multi-part kit but I’m not sure I actually want to paint them. I’d like to make some room on the painting desk for Ogors or maybe some more guardsmen, so I’m going to put those last two models aside for now. I’d only need them if I decided to expand this unit to 20 anyway…

That means I only have ten spider riders and the hut terrain piece if I want to finish all the Night Goblins from Battle for Skull Pass! I don’t think I want to use the spider riders, but being able to put up before and after pictures is pretty tempting!

I’m very conscious of the fact that I have eight models in the mail right now, so if I want to stay in the negatives when they arrive I’ll have to find a few more models to paint really quickly.

Can I get an F?

I had literally just finished the last update when the doorbell rang, and a courier got me to sign for a suspiciously box-shaped box that just so happened to include 4 Leadbelchers and 4 Ironguts:

I wanted to preorder some new contrasts & shades, they’d been out of stock for ages, etc etc etc.

So, uh… back to positives, I guess!

Fortunately I’ve got the Ogor Slaughtermaster almost done this evening, and five more Nighthaunt Chainrasps have stepped up to be some easy wins.

I should be back below zero “soon”.
