And a cheeky 23 more Moonclan Grots rebased and touched up, to juuust sneak them into April:
That brings this month’s total to 84 models completed, which I’m very happy with!

This is fantastic effort, such a shame your family insist on burdening you with thoughtful gifts… I can imagine a ‘Yay!’ moment followed by an ‘Oh crap!’ moment
This is an Astra Militarum blog now, apparently…
Painting continues apace on the next Imperial Guard reinforcements. I’m throwing in as many shortcuts as I can while still having them mesh with my old, 2009-painted models.
Meanwhile, an Ogor Tyrant arrived in the post today, bringing me to 11 Ogors new in box.
I decided I was in danger of ignoring the Ogors, so I put him together immediately. I’ll see if I get the energy to put together the rest of them this week.
So that’s +1 to the golf scores and 2 effort in Figure Case:
BATG score: 42
Shame Golf score: -81
Today I finished ten more men for the meat grinder:
These get me to two infantry squads in “Red Platoon”, with two more to go. Those need some assembly and undercoating, so they can wait for now. I’m trying to stick to models I’ve already got built & primed (or almost built & primed) to get myself back below zero as soon as possible.
The two squads I’ve painted for Red Platoon were a bit of an oddity: they’re some of the few guardsmen I bought pre-built, and they were missing pouches and accessories. I decided to smash them out because they were undercoated already but on reflection, I should have maybe rebuilt them into models for my Ventilators. The blue scheme is almost all done with contrast paints and takes much less time to paint than the older one, and the lack of accessories really does kind of bother me.
Oh well. There’s still at least 90 more guardsmen (that’s just infantry squads!) for me build & paint, provided I don’t go mad first.
For entertainment’s sake, here’s a comparison between a model I painted in about 2009 and one of the just-finished models:
I think the lesson here is “giving up on edge highlighting is liberating”.
Next on the table are two command squads and an officer:
Anyway, here’s how the scores sit now:
BATG score: 32
Shame Golf score: -92
Today I finished six Hobgrots to take the unit to ten:
I’m very glad to be done with them - more on my Chaos Dwarf blog!
I also received an initially-confusing package from Britain. I’d forgotten what I’d ordered! Fortunately it was full of an Ogor Slaughtermaster and Mawpot, and not, like, wasps or angry badgers:
The Slaughtermaster needs some TLC (his chains were missing) and Finecast is the devil, but they travelled surprisingly well!
I’ve put these each down as 5 effort in Figure Case, and that’s six more models painted and 2 added to the pile, plus a finished unit is a bonus point in Shame Golf.
BATG score: 28
Shame Golf score: -97
Today I assembled six Ogor Gluttons, did a little restorative conversion work on my Slaughtermaster, and did a whole load of basing:
I’ve decided to repair the Slaughtermaster as if he’s broken the chains holding his cauldron and he’s off to do some murders. That’ll let me paint his back more easily (I presume someone left the chains off to paint him originally and then lost the bit when he was sold). I’ll sculpt some spilled stew to cover the missing chains on the cauldron.
That’s twelve Effort assembled, and no movement on the Golf scores:
BATG score: 28
Shame Golf score: -97
Bought 10 Fyreslayer Berzerkers. Full write up here.
In my defence, they were half price and I have a plan.
Also, more Guardsmen nearly done:
New totals:

I know @Reaver - the pile grows but I’m still digging!
There’s been a Federal election going on in Australia recently, so as someone who’s very politically-engaged I’ve been VERY STRESSED for the last week or so.
However, in the afternoon of polling day I calmed myself down by finishing off this Imperial Guard command squad:
The Officer was painted previously, that’s 4 painted models off the pile.
Here is what’s next on the production line:
BATG score: 34
Shame Golf score: -91
The next part of the Kadim/K’Daai conversions arrived:
Just five Brimstone Horrors. Still have to think about legs…
BATG score: 39
Shame Golf score: -86
I’m not really sure what this chap is, but he’s painted:
I’ve put him down as an Astra Militarum Conscript for now, but he might end up as a regular guardsman, part of a Kill Team, or doing duty as a Freeguild Handgunner.
I’ve always loved the Flagellant models and wanted to do something with them, I just don’t like the way they look with Cadian arms, so I wanted to test out Skitarii arms on one. Everything came from my bitz box, so he’s a -1 without a corresponding purchase.
Also, I undercoated the Ogors that are so-far assembled, and the Bull Centaurs:
That leaves things standing thusly:
BATG score: 38
Shame Golf score: -87
I’m working on my Fellwater Troggoths today but they’re proving a little tricky, so I decided to take a break and paint up the two Khorne Berzerker Champions I assembled a while back.
I needed to paint the new parts to match the existing paint - I didn’t think it would be easy, but it turns out that if you use layer paints over a black undercoat you get terrible coverage no matter how hard you try! Although I quite like the effect I’ve managed on their faces. It’s just layering for the most part but I added a dot of Gor-Grunta Fur contrast paint in the eyes and it gives them a lovely “glazed and insane” look, despite the fact that I don’t paint eyes.
Just for fun I freehanded their unit markings to see if I’ve still got it:
I’ve not tried the World Eaters logo before, I quite like it!
That’s two more off the pile:
BATG score: 36
Shame Golf score: -89
I’m still working on Fellwater Troggoths, but I got distracted again and knocked out a test Ogor.
Zenithal prime, carroburg crimson over everything, zenithal drybrush of light grey then bone, then contrast paints on everything. Drybrush to add definition to the flesh, then do the metals. Short and sweet. Very enjoyable painting experience and I look forward to painting more.
Score updates:
BATG score: 35
Shame Golf score: -90
Since I enjoyed painting the Ogor so much, I felt compelled to give him some friends:
I don’t know why, but the skin gave me a lot of problems - getting the tone right, keeping enough of the red undershading, and not having them come out pale. I’m really not sure what happened, but ultimately these are just the first unit so close enough is good enough.
Yesterday, I also received a package containing three Soulsnare Shackles (my previous set broke in a million pieces, sadly). I’ll count them even though they’re a replacement:
I took some time out to undercoat them after I took this picture, thinking I’d paint them really quickly, but the undercoat was problematic and refused to dry quickly.
So, that’s a net BATG gain of only 2, but quite a lot of Effort completed:
BATG score: 33
Shame Golf score: -92
Aaaand I’ve painted up the Soulsnare Shackles:
I did these very quick and dirty: brown undercoat, dark and then light silver drybrushes, followed by patchy attacks of black and brown washes.
Just enough to get them off the workbench.
BATG score: 30
Shame Golf score: -95
It’s been a hard couple of weeks for motivation, so I’ve put the Troggoths away and just picked up something primed to paint. Result: painted Spirit Torment!
Also I put together and undercoated the rest of my Ogors, since I think I’m looking forward to getting them painted.
It doesn’t show up in the picture, but I had to do some conversion work on the Ogor Slaughtermaster because the chains were missing from the secondhand model I bought.
BATG Score: 29
Shame Golf score: -96
I’m not going to count these, because they weren’t really in the pile and because they’re a test, but I painted a banged-up classic HeroQuest elf and skeleton:
I’m considering painting up my relaunch HeroQuest box using monochrome schemes, taking some inspiration from Ninj0n’s latest video.
I won’t follow his scheme exactly, but the idea of using contrast and zenithal priming to get some depth and interest on the new HeroQuest modes is appealing - I really think the plastic that Hasbro has chosen for the models in the new box doesn’t lend itself well to fully painting them, but inreally was looking forward to doing something with them.
Not sure, will think more on it.
Anyway, there they are.
While waiting for washes to dry on some Ogors (not quite finished yet), I painted some Nighthaunt Chainrasps:
Just something productive to do to make sure I didn’t get distracted from painting!
BATG score: 24
Shame Golf score: -101
And here are the Ogor Ironguts I was painting contemporaneously with the Chainrasps:
They were a joy to paint and a pain to photograph! I’ll definitely be getting more of them soon.
I used a zenithal prime and lots of contrast paint & drybrushing to blast through the non-metallics, and then spent a few hours on the metals, trying to get a rusty, unloved effect. There’s verdigris on the bronze, but I’m not sure it survived the washes over the top. Oh well. They still look roughly how I planned them!
That brings me over 700 “effort” painted (total, not this year!) and very close to 500 painted models in my collection, which is pretty sweet!
And I’m creeping up on hitting the balance point for BATG, which is pretty good considering that HeroQuest happened!
I’ll do a mid-year reflection once we hit end of June. Maybe I can paint something else in the next three days…
BATG score: 20
Shame Golf score: -105
So many cool ogres stampeding around the forum these days. So awesome, must resist!
