How can we not! These are beautiful! Holy crap. Will these join admiralty?
Magnificient work, Khan! Outstanding job and seamless results. I would probabloy not be able to pull off same-sizing and matching proportions across a rank and file kit to this degree, you certainly have an eye for proportions and grasp of measurements that has stood you in good stead. Sculpting loose two-handed weapons that are interchangably compatible across several different miniature are among the most difficult things you can handsculpt for infantry, but you did it! And the interchangable hats will go a long way toward unit variety. Such a great touch! You’re really fulfilling the hobbyist’s dream for metal big hat CDs here.
Shapes, details and proportions are all spot-on. As a fellow amateur I understand the pitfalls, but I don’t even have eye-measurement to properly recognize all the little size and symmetry flaws. You’ve hit right on target with splendid accuracy, and the results are far more professional than anything I’ve ever cobbled together.
This is perfection in progress, and the design choices are top-notch. Lovely ornaments and daggers!
Please take care for postage so that it’s a tracked parcel (I will do likewise when sending them, and some of my own sculpts, off to the caster). I look forward to see them in the flesh. I’ll obviously check closely so everything is mould-friendly, but the pictures alone assures me no tweaking will be necessary.
Stunning work! Above and beyond the call of duty. We’ll see if they’ll be buoyed up for their release by Kickstarter or just released ordinarily. In any case, I know people will love them, and you will bring joy to many collectors out there with the fine fruits of your fingers.
@MichaelX : They will indeed.
This sparks joy
Brilliant work! Even I’m tempted to get myself some BigHats!
They look excellent! Great detail work and very clean sculpting as always. Especial kudos for managing the proportions and arm/hand-positions so well across three sculpts. I’m looking forward to admiring them up close in metal!
james you bastard. those are somethign out of this world
honestly, noone ever get as close as you to the original. 3d models are a hoax. this passion can only be transported via hand sculpting
Heil to Thunder Mustaches!!
and thx god for covid restrictions. i know those things are filled with your saliva…
@Admiral Do you think you’ll market them as a set of three or as single models? Anyway, tell me when I can preorder them, they are (@Fuggit_Khan ) glorious!!!
Thank you everyone for all the nice comments and support, I’m very happy people like what I’ve managed to cobble together
I did forget to mention, that there’s two bits that can’t be interchangeable amongst all three CDs, simply because of their poses.
In the below pic, the axe on the far left only fits this guy…this is because of wrist positions in order for him to hold the axe forward. But naturally anyone could simply cut and swap axe blades to make it fit amongst all three.
Secondly, the CD in the middle can’t wear the uber tall Hashut Lords Hat, because the horns of that Big Hat would bump up against the axe blade that he’s swinging up and over over his shoulder…I toyed with moving his swing position out more to accommodate the horns, but then he wouldn’t be able to rank up properly, and ultimately being able to rank them up took precedence :
But I think there’s still like 13 different various combos that people can make from these guys.
Anyways, thanks again!
Now back to converting “hobgrots”
In awe of the level of skill on display here. I’m trying to stick together a set of 2-handed weapon guys at the moment, and I’ve been struggling to line up the right wrist positions using models that someone else already made for me!
Awesome looking forward to getting these dudes
They are absolutely fabulous. Amazing work!
Thundermustache is the guy that everyone shold make head of the entire army!
James, those models are magnific, i posted them today on CDO Instagram because it’s just too much
what an outstanding job!
7 months of dedication and saliva really payed off!!!
Very nice job on the Axemen!
@Habitual_Lurker
It’s tough isn’t it? Something that looks so simple as wrist positions can be dreadfully difficult. At least to make them look natural.
@Loidrial
“Thundermustache”
He’s my favorite guy too, I put a bit of extra work in on him with the idea he should be a CD Lord/general. His shoulder pauldrons are also decorated with thunder bolt patterns, and I gave him zigzag cuffs.
His mustache was an afterthought actually, it just popped into my head literally as I was sculpting it on him.
Anyways, thanks again to everyone for such nice compliments…for a group dedicated to such contemptuous, evil little CD bastards, everyone here sure is awfully nice
Right? I say this too often but I love this place!
We do support gaming slavery, mass homicide and sacrifices.
Outside, we are losers painting dolls xD
What an awesome world!
Anyway, thundermustaches is the brother of Thunderlips from Rocky 3 (hulk Hogan)
I will make some drawing about those mustaches for sure!!
So here’s some pics of my Golden Hat entry…Hobgoblins!
Admiral was kind enough to send me some hobgrots in the mail, and honestly this was the only reason I entered. I do have 5 (maybe 6) of the original GW Hobgoblins with me here in Thailand, and my original idea for the contest was simply to have my old school metal classic Hobgoblins killing and pissing on a pile of dead hobgrots.
But once I received them in the mail, I decided to take up the challenge to see if these horrible miniatures could be converted into a true Hobgoblin.
But first, before pics…
Have I mentioned that I hate the GW hobgrots?
Disclaimer : I know plenty of people like the new hobgrots, no worries and I respect that.
These are just my personal opinions…but there’s a reason why they’re so cheap on eBay.
Because they look stupid.
(grumpy Hobgoblin muttering)
So, let’s start off with my personal top five reasons why these GW hobgrots suck…
(1) The weapons are kinda cool, I’ll admit that I like the swords and daggers. But this is supposed to be dripping blood?
Seriously?
While I don’t go around slashing others with a sword, I’m a military combat Veteran and I assure you from personal combat experience that this isn’t what blood looks like.
This just looks so damn lame, it looks like some cheap Japanese porn.
(2) The 1980’s jewelry bracelets. I personally don’t like the idea of warriors wearing bracelets from “Hot Topic” into battle.
(3) The armor spiky bits are interesting, but overall the armor is so nonfunctional that it’s no wonder that the hobgrots are molded covered in scars.
(4) The legs and crotch.
WTF.
The stumpy out of proportion legs really bother me.
And ropes tied around their genitalia? Are these greenskins or Slaanesh?
And who at GW thought that a red rope tied around your junk would be OK?
And they literally are wearing diapers, but since these sculpts are shit, I guess that explains the diapers.
(5) Four toes.
Five fingers, but four toes.
I guess there’s a historical context…since in Southeast Asia during ancient times it was a common practice that criminals would have a toe cut off for each criminal act. And people with less than five toes weren’t allowed to enter capital cities.
But I’m pretty sure this is just a case of laziness on the part of the GW sculptors.
So…I like the helmets, swords and daggers. That’s it.
And while these hobgrots have some bits potential to be converted, I think this pic sums them up…
And now, Hobgoblins!
Firstly, thank you very much to everyone who voted for my entry. Very much appreciated!
I never did finish painting them, and the pics aren’t great.
But overall this was a good challenge and learning experience for me. I’ve made plenty of small conversions to the old metal GW Hobgoblins, but never have I sculpted some such as this. I made lots of mistakes, lots of times I cut off an arm to start again, etc.
And the Hobgoblin hunched back gave me lots of grief in terms of proportions.
Anyways, once I realized that the only saving grace of these hobgrots were the helmets and weapons, I chopped up the bodies and added green stuff and plastic sprue to reconfigure their bodies completely.
One of my (many) odd traits is that I always make my sculpts to be balanced, so that they can literally stand on their two feet.
In fact my three Hobgoblins aren’t glued to their bases at all, they’re literally perfectly balanced and standing upright on their own.
Why do I do that?
Because I feel it gives a much better feeling of proper proportions and a lifelike sense of movement.
Their arms were later cut off, but here’s some wip on the body conversions
Next up was green stuff work on their cloaks
So I’m still sorting through pics, so for now this post will be just on the Sneaky Git (pics will follow later on the other two Hobgoblins).
The Sneaky Git was the first guy I sculpted, and by far the easiest because he has no armor scales.
He was also the funnest and I’m going to make more of them for sure (who knows, maybe I’ll make some for casting with Admiralty Miniatures?)
First was their faces…the hobgrots have more of a standard goblin face. Very small and not in line with the classic Hobgoblin lore of thin, long mean faces. So I added green stuff to give them longer noses and chins.
It may not be clear in the pic, but I made three different noses on them, experimenting to see what looks best later.
In my opinion, the Git had the best nose (it’s thinner).
Next was his body, I decided to give him slightly leaner proportions than the old school GW miniatures, because it looks more “sneaky” to have a slimmer body I think
Then his arms, I cut off his 1980’s prom night bracelets and sculpted his sleeves over plastic sprue…those of you with a good eye will notice I also cut and swapped out his dagger pommels
Arms and head attached to his body with green stuff, I do these steps together while the green stuff is still wet…this allows me to move his arms around to get the best possible positions, as well as checking his balance and ability to stand on his own without toppling over.
Final green stuff details added, and the fifth toe!
For painting I decided to use my painting style that I normally reserve for my 1/35 scale military infantry models…a different style than my normal Warhammer army look. I use a wet palette using lacquer acrylics, blended together with lacquer thinner…there’s NO dry brushing, contrast paints or washes. It’s all blended “wet” on the go.
First was his cloak base colors
And why did I choose gray cloaks instead of the classic Sneaky Git black?
Because as a military history nerd, my two most favorite historical armies both wore gray…
Confederate Gray and Austro-Hungarian Pike Gray
Onwards with more painting
And done!
Hopefully you all liked him…and with all due respect to Hashut and Perry…I must commit sacrilege and say that I like my take on this Sneaky Git more than the original models
Cheers!
Great tutorial on how you made these. They do look great. Will you persevere and make a small unit of them (a lot of work!)? I guess making a mould of a couple of bodies would allow the numbers to be increased.
Envious of your skills.
I do have 5 (maybe 6) of the original GW Hobgoblins with me here in Thailand, and my original idea for the contest was simply to have my old school metal classic Hobgoblins killing and pissing on a pile of dead hobgrots.
Now that would have been a sight to behold!
One of my (many) odd traits is that I always make my sculpts to be balanced, so that they can literally stand on their two feet.
Oh, I haven’t noticed any oddities at all! Let me assure you, that you fit in mighty fine on this long-running freakshow.
Wonderful and thorough rework here. Solid sculpting and careful grasp of symmetry and proportions. All your careful tweaking and reworking of areas you were not happy with did result in a flawless end result.
The potbellies on the 1990s Perry Hobgoblins were fun (they fit in with their privileged status as middleman lackey class), but also seemed to run counter to the sneaky streak aesthetically. Good decision to make the Sneaky Git leaner and meaner.
Such care given to resculpting these langly killers would translate well into pure sculpts for casting , just saying.
The Khan’s eye shield is phenomenal!
That proposed diorama of GW Hobgobs beating on hobgrots would be awesome, and hilarious.
As already stated, Very Well Done! Lovely to see the WIP detail. I didn’t fully realize just how little of the original model was left after your conversion work. Makes me appreciate the skill and amount of work you put into these even more. Beautifully executed. The slimmer build works well. The result is a better version of hobgobs, and I think an improvment over the original GW version.
