K'daai Fireborn...worth kitbashing?

Wonder what people think of the K’daai Fireborn in TOW? Was thinking about converting/sculpting some. I mean, they don’t seem too spicy but I think Unbreakable is good right? Maybe for a minimum size speedbump type of unit might be interesting? But with so much other hobby time required, not sure if I should bother yet, even if they’re super cool looking.

There are great 3D sculpts to replace original models too.

Unbreakable sure is nice, but they’re also unstable, and with their meagre 2 wounds they really shouldn’t lose combat.
But they are quite quick and don’t hit too bad, I think they have their role on flanks for example.

The Cults 3D models are good for the metallic fireborn as imagined in Throne of Tamurkhan. For me, I prefer a plainer look as I do for all models, so I went with the Kings of War fire elementals:

That being said, I won’t be taking them with The Old World ruleset. Keep in mind that I haven’t played yet, but based on the numbers, there seems to be a lot of wasted points. Three of the k’dai models cost you 123 points naked. From what I understand, their purpose is to rush the enemy and cause as much damage as they can before inevitably crashing and burning. Nice for plink damage, but they don’t seem likely to turn the tide of a battle.

You could possibly achieve the same aim with a few units of hobgoblins and for fewer points. In the end, both the fireborn and the hobs are destined to die, but the hobs are cheaper and also fill out your core requirement. Just my two cents.

That’s a bit harsh. 3 Fireborn first cause at least one automatic S3 hit on every model in base contact and then hit with a total of nine WS4 S5 AP-1 attacks. I mean of course you could theoretically do the same damage with 20 Hobgoblins for 60 points, but that’s really not that likely. Fireborns’ problem is their relative flimsyness, but they are actually among our better damage dealers.

I’d choose bully centaurs over K’daai any day. Great weapons and a nice banner if the points are there. If they manage to make the enemy fbigo (let’s go first charge) they pretty much smash any block within 2 turns. Devastating.

K’daai don’t have access to a banner or impact hits (if you don’t consider the little s3 flaming hits sort of impact hits).

ooh, those are cool! Thank you for the link!

I have a bunch of various Bull Centaurs in the works. Definitely eager to try the Bahal Stampede style

That’s the thing, though, isn’t it? I agree that Bull Centaurs are usually the better choice, but they also cost 50% more. Minimum unit of three BC with Great Weapons is 180pts. That’s 4 Fireborn with the Manburner, so you have either 6 S6 + 3D3 S4 attacks from the Bull Centaurs or 13 S5 attacks + Blazing Body from the Fireborn. And 3 Fireborn for 123pts is a cheaky little unit which either gets ignored by your opponent and can launch a flank attack or it draws fire away from your better units.

I had 3 fireborn take out 3 trolls over a couple of rounds. Great against light cav and great guarding/attacking flanks.
Plus the daemonology movement spell on them makes them super fast

I’m sure their flaming attacks helped too with those trolls

But yes, that’s essentially where I see their role too. I wouldn’t build my army around them and wouldn’t have them form the core of my battleline, but they do have some tricks up their sleeves.

On the other hand they deal auto hits every turn enemy or foe.

I use fire elementals from Mantic! very classic.

Me thinks a small unit of 3 will suffice then. Good for variety, and some alternate gameplay perhaps. I know when I have the single Gorger or the lone Cockatrice when playing Age of Sigmar just hopping around, that’s always a fun thing to have something like that being a pest.

Very much agree!

It can also be a good tactic to sometimes use less common units. Chances are your opponent will either under- or overestimate them. Both can be to your advantage. You never know

Playing what you think works is better than playing net lists everyone expects you to.

For several reasons. WFB is always a list vs list game. And taking something different means you mess opponent concepts. Like taking MSU vs Cannons.

I found 3 of those fugly Fyreslayers Magmaspitter invocations now for cheap. Those will be my starters for the Kdaai.
