[TOW] FAQ/Errata for Chaos Dwarfs

The rules contained within this document […] will not be updated in line with any future Warhammer: the Old World publications.

Many a player of one of the legacy factions was pretty dismayed when GW announced how they were going to treat fan-favourites which would not be part of the core game for the forseeable future. It remains to be seen how this is actually going to go when the first real FAQ drops, but we have to expect that Chaos Dwarfs indeed won’t receive any kind of attention for years. There might, however, be a light at the end of the tunnel, if the most recent testimonials from GW are to be believed:

The game has been incredibly well received, and it’s great that there’s so much passion – the scope of the project has grown, so please bear with us.

We aim to do this forever. […] We’re reintroducing the world and the setting over the course of nine Arcane Journals. Once that’s done… who knows?

We can feel it in our little community. If you’re a fan of TOW or not, if you’re going to play it yourself or not - there’s no denying that it reinvigorated the whole wargames community.

And with extended play time, more and more rules questions and inconsistencies emerge. My aim is to collect all our questions here in one thread. GW may not heed our pleas for a specific Chaos Dwarfs FAQ, but most if not all questions we might have also affect other (read: core) factions, so there’s legitimate hope that everything will be explained sooner or later.

I have collected any questions which came up in our discussion or from battle reports. You can submit more here in this thread, I will keep updating this post so they’re all together and I will of course also post answers, should they come in other places. This is not supposed to be our consensus on rules questions but only official GW responses.

Q: Hobgoblin Wolf Riders can get the Feigned Flight and Reserve Move special rules. Can they use these rules if their unit is joined by a Hobgoblin Khan?
(The same is true for other USRs which affect how a unit behaves and characters joining the unit, like Drilled, Evasive, Shieldwall etc.)
A: Unless it charged, marched or fled during the Movement phase, a unit in which the majority of the models have this special rule may make a Reserve move at the end of the Shooting phase, after all shooting has been resolved.
(No specific word on Feigned Flight at this point.)

Q: If a character with the Hellshard loses his last wound as part of a challenge, will the hits from the Hellshard be directed against the character in the challenge or the unit (like a shooting attack)?
(Same wording is used for the Dwarf Slayer Deathblow rule.)
A: Even if one participant in a challenge has been slain, the challenge is considered to be ongoing until the end of the current Combat phase.

Q: The Curse of Hashut can target a character within a unit “regardless of the usual rules for targeting characters”. Can a character use Look Out Sir! against hits from the Curse of Hashut?
(Luckily, the same applies to the Wood Elf Waystalker’s Hawk-Eyed Archer ability and should be answered in general concerning attacks that allow “a specific model within a unit to be targeted. (RB p209)”)
A: Yes!

Q: Can a model’s initiative be decreased to 0 or below by multiple Mantle of Stone? Can a model with initiative 0 still make attacks and cast assailment spells in close combat?
(See this thread for the whole discussion. Luckily also applies to Wood Elf A Befuddlement Of Mischiefs Forest Spite)
A:

Q: Naphta bombs have both the Quick Shot (no -1 to hit modifier for moving and shooting) as well as Ponderous (-2 to hit modifier instead of -1 for moving and shooting) USR. How is this resolved?
A: The rules effectively cancel one another out, meaning the weapon would suffer a -1 To Hit modifier for Moving and Shooting.
→ This is from first Errata. The second part of the Quick Shot rule, being able to do a Stand & Shoot charge reaction regardless of the distance to the charging unit, is not specifically mentioned, but I can only conclude that it is still in effect, otherwise giving Naphta bombs both rules would make no sense at all.

Q: Can a character with the Levies USR, like a Hobgoblin Khan, be the army’s General?
(RAW says yes, but RAI maybe no?)
A:

Q: At which movement is a war machine moved under an Iron Daemon’s Carriage Hauler special rule? It’s own (so 3") or at the movement of the Iron Daemon (so 5" or 5+D6" for Lumbering Destruction)? Is this similar to Dragged Along? Can a war machine be towed out of combat this way if the Iron Daemon is not engaged in close combat itself?
A:

Q: Does a unit always count as being moved when targeted by a conveyance spell?
A:

Q: Does the Lammasu’s Sorcerous Miasma special rule work against any weapon/attack with Magic Attacks, like Ensorcelled Weapons or a Sword of Hoeth, or only against Magic Weapons bought from the lists of Magic Items?
A:

Q: Are hits from Blazing Body cummulative? As in, does a model in base contact with two K’daai Fireborn get one or two hits?
A:

Q: Do wounds from Blazing Body follow the usual rules for Stepping Forward?
A:

Q: Does the Ashen Banner work against shots made as part of a Stand & Shoot charge reaction?
A:

Q: If a charging unit would get into contact with an enemy unit during the “closing the door” alignment to another enemy unit it made a charge move against, is this handled like an “Unable to Align” situation (Rulebook p128) or like “Multiple Charge Target” (Rulebook p130). Is the alignment to the enemy part of the charge move in this regard?
A:

Q: Does the Hellcannon do Multiple Wounds (D3) under the whole template or only the central hole?
A:

Q: Can a Daemonsmith or Sorcerer-Prophet use his Infernal Engineer special rule with a Hellcannon?
A:

Q: Does the rider benefit from Furious Charge when mounted on a Great or Bale Taurus?
A:

In my view, the relevant part of Levies only applies to a character that is not the General attempting to “borrow” Leadership from the General. Therefore there is no issue with the Khan being the General and Levies isn’t actually impacted. It is simply not relevant in that case.

This is particularly acute because there are no Chaos Dwarf units that would ever use the General’s LD if the Khan was General. My understanding is that you pick the highest available LD. The only units with lower LD than the Khan are also Levies - even basic Kdaai are LD7.

Yes, I am of the same mind and RAW supports this, it more of a philosophical question  The only way to get a Hobgoblin Khan General anyway is when there is no other characters besides a Chaos Dwarf BSB.

RAI, look at it like this - Hobgoblins don’t trust each other (Levies even on their own Khan), Chaos Dwarfs look down on Hobgoblins and would never accept one as leader (no Chaos Dwarf unit will ever use a Khan’s LD)
