That not at all how I interpreted it, Kragnos is a relatively new “God” for Destruction. But the specifically mentioned that the Hobgoblins we kitted with armour etc from their Dark Masters which they traded for Slaves and mentioned it as a throwback to the “world that was”. Even mentioned it twice during the preview as to make a point. Im pretty sure we will se a return of Chaos Duardin, how, when and which flavor remains to be seen though.
I need to watch the stream. Here is hoping.
I actually find these minis to be a direct update from 4th edition Hobgoblins, with their lanky features, flat noses, prominent bellies, and eastern looking armors and helmets. The gits wielding two daggers are even in the same pose as the old Sneaky Gits. I reckon that these models wouldn’t look bad next to an Infernal Guard brick.
That being said, i wonder whether we are going to get more, like wolfriders, assassins (Sneaky gits), archers, heroes…
Grimdark now saying they’re gonna leak Chorfs this coming summer.
We’re in touch with them and hoping to collab soon…
Yes, could be that the chaos dwarfs will be back. The new hobgoblins have weapons and armour that look somewhat industrial in their making and look unified in their appearance. Normal greenskins have more improvised armoury. Also the banner of the standard bearer is as skull with metal strings that could be interpreted (at least I do) to be a curled beard similar to those of chaos dwarfs. They have explosive throwing weapons like grenades and I am not sure if you can make them in swamps and mires.
I am super excited.
Oh my days that’s a great shout
curly moustache and a beard…
…can’t see anything else now
Welcome aboard @Anima
Rather nice, and the physique is definitely referencing 4th edition Hobgoblins with a twist. The curious style is in its very own way in keeping with FW’s Mongolian Hobgob artwork direction.
Collectors have long used Ooglah Khan’s Wolf Boys in CD armies, though GW studio thinking in the 1990s was that Scythian Hobgoblins were the western tribes of the Dark Lands and lackeys to Chaos Dwarfs, while Mongol Hobgoblins where independent eastern free tribes roaming to the north of Cathay.
This was all a historical reference, to a whole parade of Iranian and Scythian horse nomad groups (including the Saka, who invaded Greek Bactria and northern India) dominating Central Asia during antiquity, while Turkic and Mongolian horse nomad peoples lived to the east before taking over Central Asia in the middle ages, possibly starting with the Huns. Anyone curious about it all would do well to seek out Kenneth Harl’s excellent lectures online.
It is no surprise the more famous Mongol Hobgoblins won out against Scythian pajama Hobgoblins. Games Workshop has changed its original direction here (not counting the original 1980s Hobgoblins, who had no particular historical basis or Chaos Dwarf link) and followed the same take as a number of minor companies and a great many Chaos Dwarf collectors.
Designwise, these new models are not the great steppe Hobgoblin update in plastic which one could have hoped for, whether the style had been Scythian or Mongolian. But they are an update, and they keep decently to the classic Hobgoblin physique, which is a welcome feature since FW’s artwork didn’t do that for the ever-crucial face. Hobgoblins could easily altogether have lost their characteristic physique in a new update, but they haven’t.
I am sure many hobbyists around here will make great use of them, perhaps even for extensive conversions. As conversion basis goes for anyone fancying a different style than the official models, these are golden. Sure, you’d need to sculpt cloth, hats and perhaps scale armour to mimick Ooglah Khan’s Hobgoblins or the 4th edition Chaos Dwarf underlings, but the faces are just as they should be, and the bodies are about right as well. It’s a better fit than Night Goblins, Stormvermins or Plague Monks.
As to Scythian style Hobgobs, that niche remains wide open for minor companies to cater to. @Fabelzel rules the roost as of now with his marvellous 3D-sculpts.
I look forward to see more Hobgoblin and Chaos Dwarf releases. Remember that we’ve always been weird and open for wild reinterpretations, so the more the merrier. Fingers crossed!
Cheers
Not a big fan of the overall look but I think the heads are actually decent and could work on a different torso with optional green stuff work for a more classical look. And looking at their more recent starter sets, perhaps they will sell them cheaply as separate easy-to-build sets or at least in some recruit edition or whatever.
Has anyone done investigating on what bases size the slittaz are on? 25, 28, or 32?
I’m nowhere up to date on AoS base size. Assuming the orks in the dominion box are on 32s? Stormcast on 40s? So that leaves the slittaz at one of the smaller sizes.
Judging from the box content image, I would say 25. The bases are smaller than the ork bases.
The use of these guys for so many people is whether they rank up on 20mm squares. It looks like they will …just abit painfully
Definitely prefer the guys with the helmets over the bare headed ones. Hobbos always seem to wear hats of some description.
I think the size of these probably rules out 3rd edition dwarves but would fit in well with abyssal dwarves size wise and other taller c. Dwarves.
Hope we get CDs soon but I like the Hobgrots. What is encouraging is that they are Hobgrot Slittas, which suggests that they are named to separate them from othe Hobgrots in the future ? Stabbas?, Shootas?, Raiders? Though I don’t expect them to be on wolves rather something more IP protectable and they already have grots on wolves.
Interestingly it does seem we are in the lore again, this time in Ghur.! I wonder what aesthetic we will get. Industrial yes, possibly quite steampunk, maybe mechanical beasts?
I think you’ll find they have grots on snarlfangs .
And the warg that the general is on is a great gnashtoof .
So. Who knows what our hobgoblin wolfboyz will be riding. Presumably Bonechews or Legbiters or some such trademarkable syllabic mishmash
I love this question. I love us. I love how much effort we will put in to ranking up these fuckers on tiny squares. My Chronopia lot will need the same treatment and it’s gonna be tough
Very well said Admiral and bang on!
At first my impression of these miniatures was “BLAH! WTF have they done!!” … BUT…
After grabbing my Sneaky gits and having a good look at them and looking again at these newcomers and back to the Sneaky gits and back the the new comers and back to the sneaky gits (and feeling a little like an Old Spice advertisement) I begun to see what Admiral has pointed out here, the heads are pretty much spot on, the physique is pretty much bang on as well, the other things I have noticed are the toes on the feet and the fingers… they seem to have the exact same style of claws as the originals which make these a great candidate for dressing up with robes.
What tricks the eye at first I believe is the fact these new boys have lost those robes, found some armour, straightened out those curved daggers and changed skin colour from green to skin.
I will likely get some of these on release and immediately begin time traveling them back to 1994
, I assume there will be others here doing the same and hopefully I have inspired even more to take on the challenge as I am interested to see what is created from these great bases - CDO members have done great things with Night Goblins, Stormvermin & Plague Monks in the past, it is exciting to think what could be done with these models.
Here is a picture of the old and new together so that it is easier to “look at your sneaky gitz, now back to the new, now back to your sneaky gitz, now back to the NEW!”
I would hope this is the case and I agree. Hoping that these don’t get the odd 28mm bases that have cropped up for whatever reason. Technically the hobs live between orks (32mm) and goomspite gitz (25mm) so could see them at 28. But unless eyes deceive they look to be on 25s
I love these, and I love that they’ve gone back to orange skin. Looking forward to adding these to the collection.
Is 25mm base the smallest size in AoS?
I was hoping these would be on 20mm bases
100% always been a fan of the off colour flesh/orange for hobbos
To my knowledge there aren’t 20mm circles in AoS. But I’m not the best to ask.
