Renegades Update (TOW)

Do you guys have any good suggestions for the next update to the Squarebased Renegades Chaos Dwarf army rules? The first version of Renegades was fairly conservative in its approach, but the new rules could have more sweeping changes if they’re warranted.

I’d like to see a crossbow option given to the basic chorf infantry so that the 3rd edition models can get back on the table without having to proxy for blunderbusses.

I wouldn’t go quite so bold. 3rd edition is maybe a bit too long ago.

Orc Mobs and Goblin Mobs as Merc units
No Khan required for wolfboyz

Fireborn still seem to be fragile, maybe a 6+ saving throw against shooting would work.

Yeah I can’t see Val bringing back an option to field models that have been OOP for 40 years either.

I’d expect he’ll remove the cross-restrictions, work heavily on the fireborn, likely also on the Bull Centaurs, and on spells and magic items. We know he’s a huge fan of the Destroyer but that will go in his Monstrous Renegadum. I think more orc units are a given though, and that will likely be done instead of additional chaos dwarf units.

Main difference for Chaos Dwarfs compared to Skaven and Dark Elves is lack of source material, and that’s his main influence. And chaos dwarfs are arguably already in a better place that dark elves and Skaven were. So I think the overall touch will remain a rather light one.

Yeah I know… but I have like, 15 or so of these guys. Ugh.

Hey, I don’t know where you’re playing, but if it would be against me, just field them. Rules for crossbows are known, 2 points per model, done.

It has to be small centaurs. It seems nearly everyone prefers them. Taking ravening hordes rules if needed.

But all 3rd ed stuff would be welcome but im not convinced these new rengades will be adopted

Dread quake mortar : get rid of the slow reloading rule, the gun already cost a gazillion points and is not great on anything else than dead center. Allowing the ogre to make a two shots cathay specials is a bit dirty tho.

Hellcannon : make it a warmachine (separate it from the warriors of chaos ones), and allow a deamonsmith reroll on a failed leadership test for incident.

Clarification for the Iron deamon rull for the steam carriage (would simplify rule lawyering)

Give us proper black orcs conscripts (again separated from the orcs tribes ones)

Slaves in general with interactions with hobgobos and chaos dwarfs. (Sort of a slavers chain of commands)

If can add extra cheeky stuff in the bucket list, I’d love chaos marks for our dwarfs. With a special Hashut one. After all, all chorfs are not necessarily hashutim.

Otherwise as other pointed out, the army is already okay as far as legacy/renegade armies go. (I mean look at lizards …)

Maybe he could try to separate Chaos Dwarf warriors from LOA Infernal Guard and solve the train hauling rule. I really miss the Chalice of Blood and Darkness. The war machines could need a damage buff or point drop, rockets with S8 please, dread quake with some AP and/or AB for the template. Increase the number of stomps for the Skullcracker, maybe the Skullcracker could cause Terror by default.

After running about one - two games per week here are my thoughts. Happy to hear others opinions.

  1. The K’daai warriors need some sort of armor. They look great but are glass cannons.
  2. The slow reload on the earth shaker is ridiculous given cannons, and the broken Cathay. A strength three template seems weak given the points.
  3. Iron daemon never sees the skull cracker come out. Some sort of tweaking
  4. Wolf riders shouldn’t require a khan.
  5. Magic specific to Hashut.
  6. Iron-sworn more accessible, perhaps as lower level heroes or leaders you can put with infernal guard. Take 5 instead of 10?

Id love a mechanical golem/colossus or dominator rules . Different from the tank. Not as tough

List over all isn’t that bad, especially with first renegate changes. What I would love to see:

Kdai destroyer/dominator engine rules would be great.

Infernal engineer rule modification to work with helcannon.

Blenderbuss cost drop.

Val already said this would be going into the future Monstrous Renegadum work, together with stuff like the Dread Saurian or the Rock Idol.

Seems straightforward since that was the case in 8th edition too.

It would be welcome, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Iron Hail Gunners are 12 points on a standard human profile with Light Armour and Skirmish being their only notable Special Rule. Seems like a 5pt upgrade for the gun to me. Border Princes Brigands get one for 4pts, if anything that would seem to be the minimum for Infernal Guard too.

What about a change to the reroll 1s to wound for the blunderbuss? Should the number of required shooters be reduced?

Yeah thats a good call. Our Blunderbusses are the only ones with this rule anyway (and Cathay ones have different special rules too) making that more viable would be a good way to justify the high cost

Then youd need to buff the fireglaives too. Maybe the halberdier rule? They seem worse to me that b.busses.

If every army get buffs it will be annoying .

Crossbows would have been nice actually but i think cds were designed to play at short range ever since 4th ed.

Yeah I think giving the Fireglaives the Halberd charge bonus is something very likely. And it would be very welcome!

I think that’s the key thing. One of Val’s main goals seems to be giving the legacy armies their “identity” back. That’s a bit tricky for us for obvious reasons. The WD Presents Chaos Dwarfs → Ravening Hordes → Tamurkhan → TOW axis does show some constant elements, but none of those publications feels like the definitive version sadly. It’s really a shame that we never had one “real” army book.

Have we ever done a comprehensive table like this?

What WD presents Chaos Dwarfs Ravening Hordes Tamurkhan Old World
Overlords x x x
Bull Centaurs x x
Renders x x
Orcs x x
Goblins x x
Black Orcs x x x

Maybe we could do something like this for, well, everything, perhaps even including 3rd, but that Chaos Dwarf ally contingent is just so different, IDK if it would make much sense. Might be valuable for Val?

I thought the 8th ed wap book was amazing except for the lack of small centaurs. That was the standard that made gw attempts look bad in comparison. It is the reason why i have units of beserkers and acolytes that i never got to use even once..pity.

My wish list would be something like:

  • CD warriors with HW/S or GW or BB, optional Shield
  • IG with HW/S or FG and optional Shield and heavy Blackshard Armour
  • Infernal Ironsworn only ensorcelled HW/S, full plate Blackshard Armour
  • Regiment and detachment only for Infernals
  • Orc & Goblins only HW
  • All Hobs unchanged
  • Not sure about Black Orcs lore wise they left the CD domain
  • Lords and Heroes as in current Renegade list
  • War machines increased rocket strength, AP/AB for mortar template, either more range or AB to MC
  • Better rules for hauling, Skullcracker with more stomps (3+D3)
  • Bullcentaurs an Taur’ruk on 4x6cm - 5x7.5cm bases, that fits well with the Helsmiths’ version and the original ones, the models from Tamurkhan are overall too large, HW/S, two HWs or GW, optional Shield
  • K’daii heavy Blackshard Armour, maybe Frenzy and a rule that if frenzy is lost the blazing body gets AP that would be fluffy.

I believe this also doesn’t work on the iron daemon as it’s a chariot. An engineer should definitely be allowed to use rerolls. No pun intended.

Maybe, it is consistent with Empire and Dwarfs though, which can’t use their re-rolls for things like the Steam Tank or Gyrocopters either.
