The Big Poll: Helsmiths of Hashut

Honestly the sheer brutality of the purge of the Hatshits is impressive. We can at least relax. Nipples aside, the chains were good, but there were factually too many horns on those models and they augured poorly for this range. They’ve been dropped harder than the space wolf furry helmets.

You’ve hit the nail on the head (again).
I’ve honestly tried to like these new Chaos Dwarfs, I’ve tried to acknowledge that times have changed since my first Warhammer games back in 4th edition.
But I failed miserably, I just don’t like them, as hard as I try.
As you said Eddy, they look substandard, both in sculpts and in any sort of creative thought that may have gone into them.
They’re so bland, that they remind me of my childhood days of buying green plastic army soldiers in a bag for $1.50 (tank and Jeep included).

And even though I don’t like centaurs in general (along with disliking fawns, satyrs, etc), I can appreciate why people like these new centaurs…they DO have a nice look of them, and I’d venture to say they are the only new dwarfs that don’t look like preschool toys.

  • My apologies to everyone who likes the range

But I do like the new hobgrot vandalz, although cornixt also nails it on the head in regards to his comment on their lack of poses. More GW laziness in my opinion.

But basically, you’re right (and prophetic) to have stated that you wished GW wouldn’t touch the CDs any more.

I’d like to think no one needs to apologise for not liking them, just like no one who likes them needs to apologise.

I can see there are a lot of new people joining the community here so for those who don’t know…

As an army with little to no support for over 20 years (bare that in mind 20 years) and 30 years for some of us as a community the creativity and love for what feels like our faction probably more than most people like ‘their faction’ so when it’s redone and it’s different there can be bigger reactions than elsewhere, maybe. But it all comes from that background of supporting our own army because it wasn’t being supported.

This is still just hobby, like it or love it it’s all still good. I’m not a fan of some (quite a lot) of the stl miniature ranges but when I see people painting them up and posting them on here damn straight I’m still going to show the painting and the hobby some love as people are painting and enjoying and feeding Chaos Dwarfs.

And I think already in different places around the forum there been hate posts and love posts and not a single damn argument, love that.

Nobody has criticised anyone for sharing their opinions here or on discord. It’s what makes our community so rock solid.

I’d even go further: There’s not even one Chaos Dwarf faction, there’s three. Now four with the Helsmiths. There are folks who are really in to the 3rd edition Chaos Dwarfs, they want their bazookas and tenderisers and juggernauts. There’s people who like Big Hats and the 90s red era and bright colours and green bases and, well, big hats. There’s people who like the Legion of Azgorh with their grittiness and sharp edges. Now there are people who like the Helsmiths and their High Fantasy aesthetic. There’s a reason the Helmet/Hat/Mask Question is so beloved, now we have to amend a fourth option.

There were complaints when LoA came out because it left out lots of familiar units (Cav sized Bull Centaurs being the prime example) and abandoned the big hat concept to some extent. There were also complaints when TOW dropped and stuck with LoA. I wasn’t around yet when Big Hats dropped but I would he shocked if there weren’t people who didn’t like the direction. All of those opinions are valid, just as all the flip side opinions are valid who like whatever the others dislike. Goes without saying.

And it bears repeating: We have a situation where GW drops a new Chaos Dwarf faction and there is so many alternatives that people can afford to not like it. Tell that to the community ten years ago.

Helsmiths as a 4th faction of our many is a great way to think.

At the moment I’m really enjoying the idea of the Priests. There are some very ritual robed designs in these new minis.

I love the idea of them preaching, much like The Children of Thanos go before Thanos arrives, that it’s a wonderful thing that’s he’s coming to destroy you.

“Congratulations, you have been chosen to hear the word of Hashut. The Bullfather will bring order where you now have Chaos”

Last thing you hear before slaughter on an industrial scale

Maybe try and convert some kind of pulpit too from that Taurus model.

Also like the idea of the Despot (for all the awful trademark names for everything I love that the leaders are Despots) that has lost himself to demon binding and summoning and make some kind of conversation with a huge demon standing over behind him as a count as mini for the Taurus. Like the Be’lakor mini or something

I see some very talented chaos dwarf sculptors/designers really arent keen on the new aos cd range. I reckon they should get together and come up with their ideas for what the 4th range of gw chaos dwarfs should have looked like. Create some sketches, original stls or physical sculpts that could be released in the future. Would be pretty cool to see what could have been…

If say there’s actually 5 versions.

3rd Ed
Big hats
Hellcannon (admittedly not a range)
Legion of Azgorh
Hellsmiths

I’m very much precisely in the middle of this list. The hellcannon vibe had great potential.

Now there is a tempting prospect…

I guess we are all doing that in our own way, by making the armies we want to see.

If talented people got together and produced 4 blunderbuss sculpts , 4 great weapon dudes, a command group and a sorcerer that had a similar (superior) style (whatever that might be)…thats most of an army right there…

You mean like free source 3D print files?

There’s easily a dozen different versions of chaos dwarfs in slightly different styles floating around already

I was seriously considering commissioning someone to create some sculpts of the forge of the chaos dwarf characters concept art and some infantry based of the other artwork, but I’ve just noticed White Angel Miniatures have pretty much done just that. Still look a little bit off though, like they are too tall and lanky but I’m tempted to get some prints

This is the problem i see with a lot of modern cd sculpts. Too tall! Regardless of size the proportions are off. This is why i liked the blunderbusses more than the rest as they looked more squat.
You could try reducing the height dimension a bit but you cant always get away with it.

Please do commision if you can afford it!

Here’s three out of context quotes and a lovely little link to CDO’s very own cheap as free toys. Hope to see you all contributing in the future!

This post brought to you by the reintegration society for Walhut’s lost souls. May the good blubber guide your way.

So based on the saturnine box timeline.

May - preview
July - preorders
August available separately

So theoretically

July - Hellsmiths preview
September - preorders
October - available separately

I would guess either November or December for wave 2.
